I've never had to loosen up or take out the drain plug on my 'yak.  Check it, yes, but always ensuring that it is screwed on, and tightly sealed.

The guy said he went in for a swim.
TL;DW,
Kayak fisherman narrates his outing, winds pick up to 20+ MPH, goes for a swim, gets rescued by Coast Guard.
No footage of going into water, or rescue...

Great story, ty for sharing it!

Just found this older thread by coincidence which is another tale of flipping in FW but due to a down-rigger snag: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=94407.msg325474;topicseen#new

Glad to share here!

That's one of my fears.  Snagging on something with the downrigger deployed.

Waay back in the day, when I was young, dumb, and... you know, full of ideas.  My friends and I got invited to stay with them at the Housekeeping Camp in Yosemite.  I think we had the perfect spot, at the end of the camp, right next to the river.  It's the middle of June, and snow is still melting into the Merced River.  My friend and I decided to jump off the bridge nearby at the camp.  We both jumped in at the same time.  We were just wearing swim trunks. I'd say my friend and I were in good health and shape at the time.  After we jumped in, surfaced, caught our breath, looked at each other, we looked back at the bridge and noticed how fast we were already down stream.  Very cold water.  Muscles were cramping up.  We swam to shore as fast as we could.  We weren't even in the water that long.  My friends helped us get up onto the bank, and brought us back to camp. I was skinny back then, and my friend was bigger than me with more mass.  They said I looked like a ghost when I got out of the water.  I needed help walking back to camp, which was close by.  I took off my trunks, changed into some clothes, and got into the sleeping bag, and they piled their sleeping bags on top of me.  I was shivering in the fetal position.  My friends parents checked up on me every so often.  I went to sleep and didn't wake up 'til dinner time.  Stories were shared, head shaking, facepalms, etc. Med evac helicopters were heard throughout the valley periodically while we were there. Everyday for the four days we were there. My friends thought that they'd have to come for me too.  This made me look up the different stages of Hypothermia. I definitely had moderate hypothermia.  My friend was able to shake off his mild hypothermia by getting into full clothing, getting warm, and walking around.  I definitely learned something.
TL;DR: Young guy has no idea what jumping into a river being fed by snow meltoff will do to his body.  Luckily, gets out of water quickly and survives mild hypothermia. Learns lesson.

With all the helpful information in this thread, knowing how my body is now, my physical strength, what I've experienced, the comfort level I like, I'm going to go with a semi-dry suit.

"25mph with 40mph gusts, 48 degree water temps, no pfd, no vhf. he's lucky to be alive because he was in the running for the darwin award"
Sheesh.
I'm a noob to the ocean still.  I'll probably stick to going with a buddy forever.

All these videos are showing up in my YT feed now.
Sorry if this is posted in another thread, but it's something relevant to this particular thread.

He goes over the incident in detail.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Sacramento River Trolling
« on: October 19, 2021, 05:19:44 PM »
It was a zoo last Saturday.  A bass tournament was happening at Discovery Park, and lots of boat traffic out on the water by 11AM.  It was a challenge deciding where to anchor.  The river flows South under I-80 and around the bend at Sand Cove, and it gets turbulent in some spots.  I snagged and was trying to pull up on my spreader bar with a Silvertron attached. I brought my pulling sticks that I use for my FG knots, and was pulling and pulling until it broke off the 3oz weight and Silvertron spinner.  Current, current seam, and Eddies are something I just learned, and experienced on Saturday.  In the pic I posted on Saturday, we were in about 18-20 feet of water 30 feet from the bank.  A fluke anchor and 4 foot chain (7.5lbs total weight), was holding my kayak, and my son was tethered off behind me.  All QRS stuff via clam cleats, on both kayaks.  Should we need to separate quickly, no problem.  Throw the paracord out into the water.  Just saw two other 'yaks out on the water.  No one on the bank, 'yaks, or boats caught anything.  Will try again.  I'd like to try the DWC again at the loch, and jig there.  But much cooler weather is needed.

Anchored for about an hour now, near Sand Cove Park. I see stuff passing underneath, but no bites...

I was at Roosevelt Cut, right out of Sugar Barge, on Labor Day.  It became a water circus come noon time. Boats churned up the water and we had to get out of the slough.  Tons of boaters speeding, tailgating while speeding, and very close range passing.  Thank you for the insight on the terrain.  I'll have to pick up more flatfish, and then some more of the associated equipment.  What I see on the Navionics webapp vs live sonar when you're out on the water always varies.  I'm probably going to have to pass over these "deep spots" at least once to know what I'm getting into.  You're right about the weather this weekend.  It's still warm out.  I wanted to go next weekend as the forecast will be cooling down, but may have to think about trying to go out on a weekday now.  Thank you Matt!

I've spent this week learning about the Sacramento River - Walnut Grove area, Miller Park to Sand Cove Park sections.  Navionics depth charts, tide charts, lures, techniques and all.  I've had this poster on my wall as a kid.  It's been a goal to catch a river salmon for a long time.  35 years later, better late than never.  Tips and suggestions for this noob trying to catch a mudsalmon highly appreciated.  I love going out on weekdays, but I'm not able to anymore.  0'dark hundred is when I like to hit the water, or close to it.  One rod is setup for dragging a kwikfish, another for inline spinners.  One thing I wanted to know, is it safe to anchor off(QRAS with a fluke style anchor) and jig the deep spots.

I too have a Garage Gator.  The older cable ones.  I have a small house.  No driveway or backyard.  Luckily, we have a high ceiling garage.

Places to Launch and Camp / Re: Barge Canal Access/Deep Water Ship Channel

Went to the loch first thing and used a laser minnow. Water temp was way too warm.  Caught a couple of largemouth bass and headed out of there.  Made our way out to Lake Washington and pulled up a keeper Striper on an umbrella rig.  My son wanted to make some tacos, so he was happy.  Was a nice day out.  Beware that Cemex plant loading ships with concrete material.  Steady stream of dust in the immediate area as the winds were blowing toward the Southeast.  I put on my mask, and peddled as fast as I could to get through that stuff.

Gas motors I presume?  I noticed that in recent pics via Google Maps, the gate is no more, and posts are in the ground, from the parking lot to the launch.  My kayaks are registered and CF numbers are on the bow.  I wanted an alternative if the locks were busy, or fish weren't biting in there.  I don't have a Mirage drive, and the effort will wear this old man out traveling/trolling West to the deep channel area.  Thank you replying, Fishcomb.
