General Talk / Halibut methods for paddlers
« on: March 21, 2017, 01:19:00 PM »
I've been reading on different methods on how to effectively catch butts in HMB from a paddle kayak. Seems like drifting live bait will most likely be my preferred method if I'd want fish longer without exhausting myself out within an hour.
Can anybody share their knowledge with me? I'll probably fish inside the bay too. I just want to gear up appropriately for when the frenzy occurs.
I've caught quite a few off of charter boats drifting. I'm guessing of my yak will be quite similar. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

General Talk / First paddle out today
« on: March 19, 2017, 05:30:19 PM »
Took my yak out for the first time today out of HMB. Boy that is quite a paddle just out of the jetty!
Anyhow, tossed out a ring and a trap. Paddled back right inside the jetty and just hung out in the calm for 15 min and paddled back. Did this twice and came up with 2 fat Dungy's and 6 huge rock crab.
On my final paddle out the foot peg snapped off of my left side as I was paddling which caused me to straighten my leg and lean to the left and of course, I took a dunk. Luckily I had my wetsuit on and my buddy was there. I was able to immediately prop back up on my yak first attempt. I dont see how some folks go out in waders! So grateful for the wetsuit. In fact, I was warmer after I got wet than when I was dry. It was like was zipped up in warm water after a while.
Anyhow, not bad fo my first time out. I didn't venture past 2-300 yards out of the mouth. I probably could've but, baby steps.

General Talk / Marine Radio suggestions
« on: March 14, 2017, 07:07:53 AM »
OK folks, I've got most everything for my yak and I'm confused about what marine radio to get. I went on Amazon and about all reviews (in the $100 price range) seem to have an avg of about 10% of waterproof/resistant failures, primarily on the Uniden and Cobra models. anybody have any suggestions on this important decision? I'm ready to go out on my first trek this Sunday (weather and water permitting) and I've no idea on which one to get. Thanks

General Talk / Capsized Kayaks
« on: March 13, 2017, 08:11:42 AM »
Anybody hear about those 3 kayakers that capsized in Bodega Bay? Anybody know who they were? Were they fishing? What actually happened?
I was out walking on the GG bridge with a sleeveless shirt staring at the water wishing I was out on it because it was so calm. Man...

General Talk / Thule Rack questions
« on: March 02, 2017, 01:18:06 PM »
I'm picking up a Thule Hullivator 887xt. I plan on putting it on top of a Yukon Denali XL (currently outfitted with factory racks).
I know nothing about these aftermarket rack systems (new to kayaking).
I've looked at Thule's website and it just isn't clear to me as to what exactly to purchase to properly accommodate the Hullivator 887xt.
Can anybody tell me what exactly to get.
**Note** there's so many options and ways to go. I'd rather purchase on Craigslist or here.  I just need to know what exactly to get.
thanks for your input!

Introductions / new kayaker here
« on: February 22, 2017, 08:26:11 AM »
hello all,
been fishing all my life but new to the sport of kayak fishing. Just picked up a Malibu Stealth 12 and starting to get all my necessary gear. I'm from the peninsula and hoping to meet up with some folks to show me the ropes. I want to learn as much safety and fishing knowledge as possible as mother nature can be unforgiving. I'm primarily a saltwater guy. hoping to learn to fish the bay for flatties and stripers. But also excited about lings and salmon too.
hope to hear from some good folks!

Jeff
