Hey everyone,

I joined a couple years ago when I had a kayak (basic Costco).

I want to get a angler style kayak.  I am a great fisherman and have been on the water all my life.  Can anyone think of a particular kayak that would suit me best?  (NO Hobies)

I know of a OK Trident 15ft for 750.  but 15ft is a little long for me, as I have a 8ft bed etc.

Thanks for any insight.

Best Regards,

MBC

It all depends on the bodies of water you want to frequent & your physical stature.  A 15-16'+ kayak in an 8' truck bed is quite normal btw  :smt003

You'll hear this a million times along the way but .... once you figure out where you want to kayak most, then you will want to try a variety of kayaks to focus in on what suits you best.  I can tell you what I like/dislike but that's ME & you are, YOU  :smt002  Rest assured, if you choose the right or wrong one now ... you'll upgrade later or buy a second anyways  :smt044

Fishing for the Cure,

I will be in lakes, rivers...fresh water stuff.  I doubt I get out in the salt unless its calm.  I prefer fish with no teeth.  Not to mention I grew up on trout, catfish, bass, crappie...so thats what I enjoy...

What do you thing about the Freedom Hawk ?  There is one for 800 on craigslist....Little weird looking but could be cool...

I have a 14' boat and a 6' truck bed, plus another two feet of tailgate. It works and I'm legal. Don't forget the red flag on the end hanging out.
As for the saltwater, I mostly go out on very flat calm days. Try that and you'll be hooked, (pun intended).
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

They ARE kinda weird & might be really tough to resell later on ... if it were a couple hundred, go for it but not at $800 IMHO.

Shoot for something in the 13' range & reasonably wide ... especially if you are looking to kneel or stand up & site cast off it.  Used ones pop up on here quite often & you will generally find a better deal from one of our members than you will on CL.

What's you weight status ... that may also determine the size of kayak you will need.  If you don't care to state that ... just remember to use that as a factor & stay ~75% of the kayaks MAX load.

Paddle it first, then decide.  A lot of nice boats out there.

Fishing for the cure,

I weight 230...I plan on that being less by summer...

I was thinking a 13 ft would be a happy medium for myself...not to mention loading and unloading.

On another note...

If I wanted to kayak and camp somewhere that I could also fish...a good all around weekend...where would you suggest.  I live in Pacifica...
