Care to share where to go?

WFO at Campbell Cove on a low tide in Bodega Bay. Be careful not to go over limit, they have been writing love notes lately.

I believe the limit is 50 shrimp.

And be careful. I've read studies that pumping shrimp pretty much decimates the make up of the "underground" environment. I'll try to find the published studies a little later.

I only pump what I'll need (and unless you're getting bait for the whole posse, then 50 is usually way too much), and I try to hit different spots every time, concentrating on small areas rather than pock-marking a whole stretch of beach.

Hi H-Man:

Pumping is when your sucking out the Shrimp.

Try South Shore Beach at Grand St. and Shoreline Dr. in Alameda as the tide is going out.

This is how I made a Ghost Shrimp gun (pump)  Take a 2 1/2’ piece of 2” PVC, capped on one end and cut at 45 on the other.  Get a sprinkler handle (for turning on a sprinkler valve).  Cut the “U” off the end and thread it for about 3”.  Drill a hole in the center of the cap the same diameter as the sprinkler handle.  Drop the sprinkler handle down through the hole.  Screw a nut all the way up the thread, then a 1 1/2” washer.  Push the threaded handle through small holes in a handball or racketball , then another washer and another nut.  Compress the ball to seal the inside the PVC pipe.  To operate, look for 1/4” diameter holes in the sand as a wave is receding, in just a few inches of water.  Place the end of the gun over the hole and as you push down on the cap, pull up on the handle to suck up the shrimp.  Dump it out on the sand and you have a Ghost Shrimp.

About three years ago my wife and I put our boats in Bolinas Lagoon at approaching high tide and cruised around.....it was flat & pretty and nice....but looking down in the shallow water I could see zillions of holes in the mud.

I was thinking they were clams of some kind.   I tried digging at one with my kayak paddle blade but nothing emerged but mud.

Some of them had fresh deposits of bottom-particles distributed around the mouths of the holes.....so with my finger I gently dislodged some debris into the tunnel-mouth and ZOOP.....it was sucked down....

So were these clams?    Or were they shrimp-holes?    Or were/are they the burrows of the marine worm "UrechisCaupo" (http://www.oceanlight.com/lightbox.php?sp=Urechis_caupo)?

Thoughts?

Probably a mix of all 3. Shrimp have more than 1 hole, and more than 1 Shrimp per hole it's like a labyrinth down there.

Hi Mfish:

Is this it? Looks like a rainy day project.
Next time try this command line in search, pump "for ben"
                                                        Thanks
