Fish Talk / fishing conditions
« on: September 23, 2022, 03:50:53 PM »
Hi All, Looking for some intel. anyone been out at either Pigeon Point or Pedro point the last couple of days? I'm looking at fishing tomorrow but noticed in Pacifica the red tide is solid, looks like mud, which will totally turn off the bite. The conditions are really good for tomorrow but the red tide might change my mind. If anyone has been out please let me know.

General Fishing Tips / What a Score
« on: July 14, 2021, 01:17:03 PM »
Was at a house looking at the roof yesterday and was given a old tackle box full of old fishing gear in it. Took it home and was surprised what was inside. Looks like it belongs in a museum, old lures line, and miscellaneous gear, but to my surprise there were two pristine old Mitchell 300 reals with extra spools. Not sure what to do with all of it but it is cool just going through all of the old stuff.

General Fishing Tips / Favorite Swimbait for Lings.
« on: July 20, 2020, 09:16:48 AM »
Just wondering which is your favorite size and color of swimbait that produces the best for you to catch lings and if different which works the best for Vermillion.
I have tried different ones but do not have allot of luck with them. I usually use the shrimp flies with an anchovy but looking to up my game.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Fish On
« on: September 05, 2018, 03:47:31 PM »
Got tired of getting skunked trying for salmon on my kayak this year so decided to go out on the New Rayann on Labor Day. We fished from 6:45 am till 3:45 Pm caught, 38 fish for 21 people, the biggest 28 lbs. going to woman her first time salmon fishing. The action was on and off but when it was on sone big fish were being pulled up and high fives and fist bumps all around, but not for me. I got excited two times thinking I had a fish on, only to realize someone else's fish got caught up in my line and cut me off both times loosing all of the gear  :smt013. Realized that I am a big baby :smt010, I was happy at first for everyone catching as I was telling myself its my turn now, but as it was getting later I was not feeling the love as much because it wasn't my turn. Around 2:00 in the afternoon I was wondering if I was gonna go home empty handed (again)  :smt009 as others we leaving with some big fish than it was finally my turn. I had about 120 ft. of line out and my reel starts peeling, it takes me a while to reel it in as it was a really nice fish. A I get it next the boat I get excited its a nice fish  22 lbs.  :smt007  it takes another couple of runs then lands in the net. As it hits the deck I let out a victory scream high fives and fist bumps all around, all done with my pity party. Send down my set up and 5 minutes later get my second one 18 lbs. What a great day.  :smt004

Kayak Fly Fishing / Transducer Quality
« on: April 26, 2017, 02:56:51 PM »
I have always mounted my transducer inside my kayak but just bought a new one and it has a big space to mount it through the scupper. Do you know if you get a better image mounting it through the scupper hole over mounting it inside the hull. They have the Lowrance scupper mounts just trying to find out if the extra money will get me a better picture.

Craftsmen's Corner / Installing Fishfinder
« on: April 21, 2017, 08:03:56 PM »
Hi Al,
Just received a new 2017 Ocean Kayak Trident 13 and have looked all over for information on installing my Lowrance fishfinder with no luck. Anybody have any idea where to look, I am thinking on using a through hull system and mounting it to the tracks. Not sure what to buy, where to buy it and how to install everything. I will figure it out but thought I would start by asking for help here first to save me some frustration.
Thanks
Steve

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Servicing My Reel
« on: February 01, 2017, 03:02:26 PM »
I have be fishing for a few years now and it is time that I learn how to service the inside of the real. Is there anyone who lives on the peninsula who has experience and would be willing to show me how to do it. That way my wife wouldn't laugh at me and I would feel  like more of a man. Plus I hate paying for something that I could do if I knew how.

Went fishing with Rob AKA Low Now yesterday at pigeon point. We were on the water around 7:45 to light wind and sunny conditions and expectations high. After 5 minutes I get a my first bite which doesn't stick, a couple minutes later I get a big takedown and also comes unstuck but I am hopeful for things to continue but they didn't. Fished for another hour plus and nothing in the boat yet but had a great time enjoying the huge bait balls you could see under the kayak and the spectacular show form all of the wales. We decided to go out to 80 ft of water hoping for better fishing. Started talking to Rob about wanting to catch a 40 inch plus ling and what a great fight that would be. All of a sudden I get a huge take down, so I started trying to reel it in and I can't budge it and start to worry about it going in a hole. So I tighten up the drag a little and start to work it up a little and it starts peeling allot of, line this happen about 4 more times and my pole is bent more than it has ever been bent. I am getting the slay ride of my life and I am so excited that I am yelling to Rob this is the biggest fish I have ever hooked and slowly bring it up from 80 ft.  After about 10 minutes of fighting this fish I get the fish to the surface and look over the side of the boat expecting to see a huge ling and am shocked to see a huge halibut, luckily Rob had a gaf, I was so busy trying not to lose the fish I had rob gaf it (thanks Rob) and as soon as I get my stringer through the gill I let out a huge scream,  a high five and the biggest beating with my club I have ever given to a fish. About 15 minutes later Robs boats his own halibut which made me stoked for him and now I didn't have to share mine. I am still stoked a day later about the fight, catching a halibut finally and my wife not being able to tease me about seeing others with pictures with a halibut  and me trying 5 times to no avail. The fish ended up being 39-1/2 inches and 23 lbs.
