Closer look on my phone = those aren’t Dungeness!  Slender crab.

Yup. You are an encyclopedia of knowledge.  Thanks.

Hey Michael! It was nice meeting you yesterday during our pedal out. I had the same results in my pots :/. Hopefully we get better results next time!

It’s awesome randomly meeting NCKA members.  Your modular peddle kayak (point 65n) sure was cool.

Decided to take the AI out do you half Moon Bay on Tuesday and boy was it crazy. Had  to wait 45 minutes to use the launch and boater were grumpy.  The parking lot was completely filled so i had to park on Highway one.   Peddled a mile south and placed traps in 30-45  feet of water. Moved them every 30-60 min. For some reasons I kept catching baby Dungys.  This pot had 20. Used chicken and fish.  This is my second time out. What am I doing wrong?

Also caught this fish that looked like a trout on a sabiki.  Is this a salmon? If so it’s my first. I threw him back in so I can catch him again when he’s bigger.

"He managed to flip the kayak back over and scrambled in but again and again the damaged kayak rolled over. “Every time I would pull it right side up, it would flip over,"

I can testify that a staying on a half flooded kayak is very difficult.   Once I was practicing self rescue and couldn't stay on the kayak once i got on.   I realized that my scotty mount had broken off during one of the flips and the kayak was partially filled with water.  Pool noodle will keep the kayak off the bottom of the ocean but it won't keep you from getting extended swim lessons from the landlord.  Anyone got underwater patch and seal tape?

I finally got a chance to take out the new to me kayaks I bought back in January. Was a fun day. Caught a few fish. Unintentionally I practiced my self rescue technique..... lol. I now see why all the warnings about if it doesn’t float then make sure it is tied down. Lost my rod in about 7ft of water, luckily I was able to find it due to a floating lure that was just barely visible several few below the surface. That’s when my second self rescue took place. The first rescue I was assisted by my son in his kayak. Though I’m not sure how much help he was since he was laughing so hard.  The second was unassisted. Wasn’t difficult at all. Can’t wait until the next time.

Good for you.  I had the darnest time getting back in my yak with life jacket, waves, fear, etc.  There has been lots of good discussion on whether tying stuff down is good (because you can get tangled up in it) or make it float (and chase after it later).  Either way, its always a good idea to go out with a partner.

That’s a bad ass gopher rockfish!!!!

Can’t believe it was still hungry.

Dang...looks like new lure style for this creative unemployed America.  You've got an authentic mold for pouring that plastic...yikes... :smt006

Time to try out savage lures on rockfish.

Normally, I go kayak fishing in Monterey, but since I don’t have anyone to go with, I decided to fish from shore with my son.  It’s slow but after a while he lands this nice gopher. Look at that belly?   Is it pregnant?  Dang, I feel bad but my son want to take it home.  So I cut it open and it looks like it is giving birth to something.   Hey, I’m doing a c-section!

But wait,  that looks like hair?  It’s got feet.  I’m gonna puke. No more shore fishing for me.  Back to the kayak.

Not sure where i stand on this.  But one thing for certain is that we should encourage everyone to stay home for a week.  Because if people have a cavalier attitude, they will keep closing more beaches and waters.

Scenario: They close Sonoma beaches so everyone goes to ocean beach.  That means that they will have to close Ocean beach, then everyone says, lets go to Santa Cruz.  That means they will have to close Santa Cruz.  Then everyone says lets go to Moneterey, etc, etc.  It doesn't matter where you are Clearlake (closed), Eureka, or Crescent City they will find you.  Whether you agree with sheltering, lets all agree to cut back so not to force anyone to make a decision for us.

Washington state is closing all sports fishing.  Hope this doesn't happen here.  Fish responsibly and fish solo.  Don't park in crowded areas and attract attention.

Great thread. As a healthcare professional, I'll share some thoughts.  Shelter-in-place is very important so that the number of truly "sick" patients don't blow up and over run our hospitals like it has in NY and Italy.  But shelter-in-place won't make COVID go away.  Eventually people will have to leave their houses and people will get exposed.  Shelter-in-place only flattens out the curve in hopes of getting a vaccine/cure and not overloading the system.

I love that fisherman are so thoughtful about not transmitting the disease.  There are stories of others that blatantly disregard shelter.  These are the people that we need to convince to change practice.  If you want to fish and don't come in contact with others (ie. lets meet up at the beach), then it is highly unlikely that you will be contributing to the crisis.  But if we are too strict, we will see a rise in depression and a financial economical collapse.

COVID was useful in that
1. It teaches us to be more conscious about germs.  I majored in microbiology and i always thought that people should not shake hands and the population density is too high in certain cities.
2. It also shows us that we are too dependent on the Chinese (I can say this without being racist because my parents were Chinese) for drugs, PPE, and medical supplies.
3. It has taught us how to conduct more things remotely, and hopefully will decrease our demand on fossil fuels.

Lets avoid judging others.  But care for your neighbors and we will emerge a stronger country.

Took a break and went out for fresh air.  Never seen Pebble Beach without people!

I heard the beaches were closed (or at least the parking lots to the beaches.  Is that true?

Lake county sheriff just issued an announcement that closes all the lakes in the county, including Clear Lake, Blue Lakes, Lake Pillsbury, Indaian Valley Reservoir, Highland Springs Reservoir, and any public navigable waterway.

Had to cancel our weekend to CL.  Hotels telling us that our reservations would be cancelled by order of the Sheriff.  Ended up going to Tiberon for hali but no bites.  Caught a few perch by accident.  When you get desperate, these guys taste pretty good.

It sure would be helpful to have a list of what fishing locations are open and closed during this shelter-in-place order. Shadow cliff and Los  Vasqueros are both closed.  The beaches should be open.

Also has anyone been stopped by law-enforcement with regards to fishing  or kayaking?

The problem is that if you don’t flash freeze it, you’ll lose some of the desirable texture when eaten raw.  You can achieve a reasonable approximation to flash freezing at home, but it takes some effort (there have been a few previous discussions on this forum)...

Agree about the texture.  I wonder if you can flash freeze with dry ice in an ice chest.  The ice and salt techniques seems a bit cumbersome.
