Sean is correct on the cleaning fish etc...
2:02pm just returned from the Santa Cruz harbor where we assembled a cheerful crew to fillet and vacuum pack  700 lbs + of yellowtail, yellow fin tuna, and dorado, and that was after we gave away a bunch at the San Diego docks. Glad some of the NCKA folks showed up and took home some fish. After all the catching we really wanted to be sure none went to waste and none did. Need to eat lunch, nap, and start cleaning up gear... Will post in more later.

The qualifier has been posting reports (from the boat in progress, cool) from the trip on their web site: http://qualifier105.com/fishreports.htm
Sounds like they are having a great trip!

Here is what Walker and I settled on:
20lb, 30lb, & 40lb setups. The 20lb & 30lb have 300yds of 50lb spectra with 100yd top shot. the 40lb set ups have 65lb spectra with top shot. If we are fishing in the kelp my thinking is to take off the top shot and just use the spectra with 6' of floro. to cut kelp.
Terminal gear is simple: yo yo jigs, surface jigs, and hooks for bait. A handful of sliding sinkers and torpedoes. That's it.
Fishing from the big boat... hmm... wish I had a 9' rod for throwing bait and surface jigs. Would like to try that.
Tuna! Yellowtail! let's go!!!!!

WOW, a three+ hour battle!! What an amazing story. Thank you so much for taking the time to report out.

Today, Randy and I dropped some change at the tackle shop there at Fisherman's Landing.   They said that they will be open until 7:30 Thursday.
Thanks for that info Pat, we have need of a couple last minute items and now won't stress on the closing time.

Who ever hands out berth arrangements at the dock please keep me and Walker together in a room, we packed assuming we would be together and I don't want to hassle with repacking bags and gear on the chance we might be split. Thanks!

Thanks, PAL, for the hooping effort. If all the "shorts" were just a tiny bit short last year then maybe they will be just a tiny bit over this year. All the same Walker and I will purchase report cards and be ready to go.

Did someone take the last spot, is the trip full?

Last year Sean had room sign up ahead of time which was nice because then we also got to see a list of who all was on the trip. Is that happening or did I miss it?

Anyone see any forecast of weather for the outer waters heading into the weekend?

We finished packing tackle last night and have it down to half or less of what we brought last year!

It is very cool from a geek perspective--your own mini autonomous marine surface exploration vehicle.
This has me thinking how fun it would be to have a "sub surface" vehicle: a submarine with torpedo spears. One could sit on the beach and guide it on an underwater tour via the monitor and upon sighting a huge flattie launch the spear torpedos and then reel it in back to the beach. Crazy, but fun to let the mind wander amongst the possibilities. Yeah it's geeky, but so what.

Fun, fun, fun, what could be better. Thanks for the report.
Seems like you had a nice variety fish.

Nice!!! I have been wondering about you all and how it went and if you camped out. Thought we might just make a run down, but too much stacked up on the to do list this weekend. Looks like you had the priorities on straight.

Well, I wonder if this legally constitutes shore based fishing? One can only imagine the possibilities, but the price........wow!

Yes, all collective fingers are crossed and hoping for a smooth ocean so we can actually get onto the "banks."

PAL, are you bringing hoop nets again?

Just came across this report. I'm getting pretty excited!

"Thu Oct 16 2008, 05:07PM
The Toronado checking in this evening from the Cortez Bank with a good day of fishing. They have 80 yellowtail on deck with lots of bonito and rockfish to go with it. Still some fishing time left and Donny will keep us up to date.

The next chance to ride the Toronado and take it to the bank for a 1.5 day trip will be Tuesday night October 21."
