Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Rod mount ideas for inflatable yak
« on: October 23, 2023, 01:33:49 PM »
Looks to me the sturdiest thing on that rig is the seat frame. Have you considered trying to mount something to the front part of the seat frame that could fit under your thighs while peddling? I’ve never been on the inflatable, but seems plausible

I have a Lynx, check out my post with pics on how I mounted rod holders to the seat. Works pretty well.

General Talk / Re: Kayak pedaling shoes?
« on: August 01, 2022, 10:07:55 AM »
All the water or kayaking shoes I tried didnt have enough foot and ankle support and adding insoles was difficult and started to hurt after a couple of miles.
My current best cheapest solution is a wear wool socks (thickness depends on air temp), drysuit, and old running shoes (with enough sole for slippery launches) a couple sizes bigger than normal that fit the wool socks and drysuit booties.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Union Resevoir Advice
« on: July 07, 2022, 07:27:38 AM »
Union is rarely stocked, only receives a small plant, freezes during winter, and fishing pressure is super high. Also Utica is not stocked and too shallow so all those campers fish union. The couple of holdover fish that dont get caught are smart and dry fly fishing is your best option for those fish. If you fish union the best spot I found years ago is between the east campground boat launch and the dam, there's a deeper hole there.

I haven't fished Union since I started fishing Spicer. Spicer only receives fingerling trout plants so the fish you catch are more natural, there's alot more fish, and they taste great. It's well worth the 15 minute drive from union

Don't fish Union. Drive to Spicer and fish before the wind picks up.

Hobie Kayaks / Re: Hobie Lynx
« on: February 07, 2022, 08:37:35 AM »
I pre-ordered and got my lynx in September. Great service from CCK oakland. I only kayak fish fresh water and most of my prior kayaking has been in a revo 13, i11, or paddle inflatables. My quick review is:

Pros-
Awesome to carry and load and unload
Great open deck layout for alot of gear, dogs, camping supplies
Can be used as a SUP but needs the rudder for tracking.
Fast with turbo fins and turns in a small circle
Very stable for me (170lbs and 6') and hard to roll
Can stand, sight fish, and SUP paddle in calmer water
Seat is large and comfy with added kushion
The newest arc reversible drive is super smooth
Two Lynx's can stack on top of each other if no permanent rigging is used
Transducer cavity is large and can store extra cable length.

Cons-
The outside shell is thin and fragile and easily scratches compared to rotomold kayaks. I'm very careful and usually carry the lynx instead of dragging. I haven't made a hole yet but I carry waterweld epoxy because it's only a matter of time. I seriously doubt the shell can handle any large rock or dock impacts.
Stock paddle storage location and bungee is crap.
The mid carry handle locations and design is terrible and if hobie had any self respect they would have a recall replacement.
Storage- the three storage options in the manual are OK but the horizontal options take up alot of space. I hang mine against a wall.
Hull slap- noisy hull slap even in calmer water. If hull slap drives u mad don't buy a lynx.
Alot of water over the deck in wind waves taller than 1.5' high. I have to use dry bags.
The rudder up and down  design works OK.

Overall:
Seems really fragile but that's why it's so light. Given the choice I would prefer a heavier less fragile version with the same deck layout.
Rigging options- initially was a con until I did some head scratching and figured out to mount plastic boards to the gear tracks and scotty clamps to the seat tube rails. Now my rigging works really well, paddle storage problem is fixed, kept a fairly open deck (without down rigger), and I can used a downrigger with a 2lb ball.

I don't see the need to modify and have a shorter seat to improve stability. The stock seat is not that tall. Some owners even raise the seat with an aftermarket kit.

I fish the modified kastmasters alot for planted and wild trout. Here's a couple I could quickly find. Sometimes I add the flash tape. When trolling and I want extra flash I add a small dodger about 14" ahead of the modified kastmaster. Don't make the worm too long.

Hobie Kayaks / Re: What's Hobie working on?
« on: May 14, 2021, 11:55:31 AM »
Im stoked and the Lynx has alot of pros. This looks like a great option for fresh water. I do alot of kayak camping with two 30lb dogs and the standard hobie platform is less than ideal for one dog transport, two is very difficult. The flat lynx deck looks good for two dogs and gear transport. With a couple of accessories the lynx will be a good enough fishing platform, but a downrigger will be difficult. The lynx will be slow but stable with the 11' length and 36" width. 46 pounds is awesome. The stackable design is a great feature. Looks like it can be used as a SUP. Price is high, but it includes the 180 with kickup fins, all all new hobie prices are high.

I was going to put a deposit down for a new compass for my wife, but now I am going Lynx. Just have to find one.

Hobie Kayaks / Re: Hobie Trailer
« on: December 19, 2020, 06:53:42 AM »
I have been checking Craigslist Facebook in Cali and Nevada for hobies the last two years and see complete newer TI setups with trailers every three month or so. Theres a very small market for the TIs and ive noticed selling the TIs take alot longer then regular hobies. It might be worth considering used and waiting, especially through the winter, to see if a nice TI at good discount pops up.

Hobie Kayaks / Re: Hobie 2021 models have arrived
« on: November 03, 2020, 11:29:46 AM »
The revo 13 has been due for an update for awhile but its sadly not happening in 2021. I guess I will just settle on a compass camo.

The hobie forum says new model info won't be released until "the fall". Fall starts sept 22 so looks like we will have to wait at least a couple more weeks. The prices of used hobies are really high so like the OP I'm just waiting to buy new.

General Talk / Re: North Lake Tahoe fishing
« on: September 02, 2020, 01:27:12 PM »
Yes Donnor is easier for kayak fishing, but has a ton of boat traffic lately. Tahoe macks are possible in the early morning on shelf edges or under koke schools but later in the day the macks go to 200'+. Stampede has a small population of macks under the koke schools and near the dam.

If you have a fish finder I suggest driving to south Tahoe, Baldwin/kiva beach area and jigging before the kokanee spawn. Also try trolling Stampede for trout and kokanee, and Boca for trout. Jig for Macs at donner off rocky points in deeper water. Since you don't yet have a downrigger, add some weight before your dodger if your trolling and that will get you at least 5' deeper.

For the last six years on my revo 13 I mounted my side scan on the rudder and zip tie the cable to the rudder. But I do loose probably .4mph top speed and a noticeable amount of momentum. If hobie ever restocks the parts I'm going back to the stock flush plate mount and turning off the side scan. I don't get much value with having a small screen and the side scan.
