General Fishing Tips / Crabbing and Rock Fishing location?
« on: December 02, 2017, 01:34:56 PM »
I'm looking for a spot where I can drop  my crab pot and do some rock fishing while I wait for the crabs.  My usual haunt is Muir Beach where I can drop my pot in the middle of the cove and then go fish the rocks on either side.   But it looks like the swell and wind conditions will be a bit much for me and my buddy to deal with.  Hes a confident paddler, but has never fished from a yak.

Do any of you know of a good location where I can do both in the bay area?  I'm thinking Tomales or Bodega bay, but I'm not sure where to go.

That’s great to hear as most of my fishing happens in the ocean.   Do you have a life jacket for Miles?  I know that dogs are excellent swimmers, but the seas can be pretty rough at times.

Also, how does he do when you are paddling through breakers?  Does he swim along side, or is he pretty sure-footed(sure-pawed)?

I wasn’t sure where to put this topic, so sorry if it needs moving.

I just got a new puppy.

And I would like to train her to ride on my kayak with me.  Do any of you take your pups with you?  How did you train your dog to do it?  What are the pros and cons of taking a dog with you?

Well I don’t think I can shell out for a drift boat trip.  But I’ll keep it in mind.  Thanks for all of the suggestions.  We were hoping to do a hike in to a lake, or camp on a river.  Have any of you ever been to Crystal lake on Shasta?

Thanks for all of the info.
Nice job on those trout!

I have been doing some research, and was thinking the lower trinity river looks good.  I know it’s more than a 4 hour drive, but the camping is right on the water and from what I’ve read, good sized trout can be caught all year.  Thoughts?

Hey all,

I haven’t posted in a while, been busy with work.  Hope everyone had a great thanksgiving!

My brother comes home from Texas late December.  He wants to go camping/trout fishing for a couple of days while he’s in town.  Can you guys put me on a spot?

We live in Marin, and would like a spot that’s within a 4 hour drive.

Fish Talk / Re: Is it time to reduce Rockfish limits?

In addition to Oregon, Southern California (I was told by a Santa Barbara resident) has closed their bottom fishing season in an effort to revive rock fish populations.

Reference please .. because I have not heard a thing about this.

I was told by a friend who goes to school down there, but have not been able to find any official statements on line so perhaps its all BS.

Ocean Beach is always a good show.  Also Sutro Baths.  If you wanted to cross the GG bridge, and see some trees, then check out Stinson or Muir Beach.  If you end up in Muir, stop by the Pelican Inn for a pint.

In addition to Oregon, Southern California (I was told by a Santa Barbara resident) has closed their bottom fishing season in an effort to revive rock fish populations.  I would not be surprised if Nor Cal was to do the same.  That being said, ALL of my kayak fishing this year has been for bottom fish.  I go out probably twice a week and pull up all the fish I could ever need, but have never limited out.  I cant imagine needing ten fish to feed my self/family.   So I don't think the idea of reducing the bag limit to seven is a bad one.

The majority of my catch are Brown and Gophers, and if I happen on a Blue or Black, I release them because they are scarce in my local fishery.  However, my pals up in Arcata slay Blues and Blacks on a daily basis and almost never see a brown or a gopher.
I think a more realistic approach to managing ground fish populations is to limit specific species bag limits county by county.  I know this could be frustrating for the traveling angler, but it just takes an easy Google search to find county by county restrictions and if an angler is too lazy to do their research before they drop a line, then perhaps they don't deserve to be on the water.

General Fishing Tips / Good spots for ling near Richmond?
« on: September 07, 2017, 11:14:54 PM »
My boss is taking some of us underlings out on his boat that he keeps in Richmond.  I am hoping some one(s) can point me in the direction of fish.

I would love to pull some big lings out of the water, but I'm all ears to any species except salmon as I don't have the gear and I think there are enough of us pulling salmon out of the water already.

Any if you east bay paddlers have some tips for me?  Pretty please?!?!???

That Barred perch is a nice one.  Did you end up using a Carolina rig or a drop shot?

I've poke poled a few of those buffalo sculpin. It was definitely not a Sculpin.

When I say "huge!!!"  I mean 24-30".  I know that's not gigantic by most people's standards, but it's big for me.  The leopard pattern was very small and tight.  I'll figure out what it is eventually...

I went out on my new Predator MX that I bought from sacyakattack today.  He's a great guy, gave me some extra rod holders and fish finder mounting stuff.  Also answered all of my nooby questions.

I launched off of Muir Beach with a buddy and headed out to the rocks for some fish.  This was my first time on a fishing kayak and I have to say the difference is night and day.  I felt stable, comfortable and safe.  My previous outings were on a tandem Costco special that felt pretty sketchy.  No regrets with the Predator MX.

The conditions were pretty foggy and cold, but the water was calm so the going was pretty easy.  Made it out to the rock and hooked up on the second cast.  I pulled out a couple of keeper Brown Rockies before heading around the corner where I caught my pb 29" ling about 2 months ago.  After about 10 casts I pulled a 10" Cabezon that I let go and turned back for the rock where I got those Rockies.  Once in position the bite was on again.  Pulled up several more Brown Rockies including a 15 incher that went on the stringer.  I also pulled up a fish that I have never seen before that was huge!!! It was orange/brown with that I'll call greenish leopard pattern on its skin.  Don't think it had scales, but I can't be sure because it spit the hook just as I got it up to the boat.  I have searched the internet for images of that fish and have come up with nothing.  I'm starting to think I dreamt it up.  I also pulled up a 16" Ling and another Cabby that both went back into the water.

All said and done I kept three nice Rockies and my buddy had another five that he kept.  Great Monday, can't wait for next week, and the next outing.

Here some pics of the catch:

Safety First / Re: To wetsuit or, not to wetsuit?
« on: August 27, 2017, 11:05:59 PM »
I've got a surf wetsuit that I'll don until I figure out what is the best set up for me.

I have dumped out of my yak once already, but the cold wasn't really a problem until I was back on shore where I started to shiver pretty severely.  Lost one of my fish, and a Spyderco PM2 that my brother gave me.  All and all a bummer outing.

Most of the rockies I catch are of the brown variety, but every once in a while Ill come across a black rocky and unless its a monster, Ill let it go in the hope that ti will live to produce more fishies for me to catch.  That being said I have yet to fish in water deeper than 40 ft. so I have not seen any signs of barometric trauma.  I did just order a fish ID card and descender for free from http://oceaned.org/request-devices/ per Smokes suggestion.  Ill let you know how that works when I need to use it.
