I would buy the Predator in a hot second... if I had the cash. The only things I have to trade are a jackson cuda 14, and my left nut.

General Fishing Tips / Which new reel??
« on: November 18, 2017, 11:33:59 AM »
In the market for a new baitcaster to use in the salt.

Was considering these two: Diawa Costal TWS  Diawa Lexa 300HD

Anyone have any experience/opinions on them? Any other options I should consider in the $180 range?

Thanks!

Curious if that'd hold up in the salt?

CA Regulations / Re: definition of fishing
« on: March 04, 2016, 01:36:32 PM »
Well, I have first-hand experience with this situation.  I was preparing for an upcoming fly fishing trip to Baja and wanted to see how some of the experimental bait fish patterns I'd tied moved in the water.  I found a quiet corner at a nearby marina -- basically a shallow mud flat about 8 inches deep.  I had maybe 10 feet of line out and was just dragging my flies out in front of me to see the swimming action.  I'd try one, clip it off and tie on another.  I was into my 5th or 6th fly when two DFG officers walked up and asked how the fishing was... I showed them what I was doing, showed them the flies I'd already tried (still with trimmed bits of leader attached), but they didn't care to hear it. They just repeated "A line in the water equals fishing."  This was in January and I hadn't bought a license for that year yet (I have purchased them every year for the last 25+ years).  They wrote me a citation for "fishing" without a license.  I forget the exact fine amount but it was $400 plus dollars.  I challenged it at the courthouse and got it reduced to $200 something dollars.

That was a painful lesson to learn.  I respect the DFG folks, they don't have an easy job to do with limited resources.  That said, it seemed to me they had boots on the ground and could clearly see my intent wasn't to catch or even temp fish. I would think in some situations they might be inclined to use their judgement and consider the situation in front of them.  But that is apparently not part of their obligation.

General Talk / Re: VHF in baja?
« on: May 07, 2015, 08:42:23 PM »
I'll report (good or bad) when I get back in 9 days.  We're up the coast a ways in Punta Pescadero.  The house we're renting has 4 kayaks, some better than others but none are too great.  Stayed there last year and had a blast.  Didn't stray too far from shore (2 miles at most) but caught a variety and lost/missed a ton.  Scored one small dorado. I'm mostly a fly dude, but this year I'm bringing a combination of both.

General Talk / VHF in baja?

Headed to the East Cape tomorrow for a week and will be doing a good amount of fishing from a yak.  Thinking it'd be worthwhile to bring my vhf on the trip, to be used just in case of emergency.  Wondered if others have done this?

General Talk / cat crapping in yard
« on: December 22, 2014, 04:28:52 PM »
Wondering if anyone in the san rafael area has a trail camera I could barrow for a few nights.  I've been cleaning cat poop out of my front yard everyday for the last couple of weeks (who knew cats would poop on grass?) and I'm tired of it.  There are several possible suspects, and I want to make sure I have the right one(s) before confronting the owner.

Alternatively, if anyone has any non-lethal but effective ways to persuade the offender to poop in someone else's yard, I would truly appreciate it.

Thanks!

General Talk / Re: purchase fishing license for Baja
« on: May 15, 2014, 10:08:16 AM »
I ended up going through Discover Baja Travel http://www.discoverbaja.com/  and so far they seem very helpful. I'm flying down this Saturday so needed a way to take care of it quickly.  They have a non-member fee that adds about $5 to the price, but going through them allowed me to use my credit card rather than mail a money order to Mex tourist office in San Diego.  They then emailed me a copy of the license and sent the hard copy priority mail.  Fingers crossed it all works out...  I think I could buy one at the Palmas Hotel in Barriles, but wasn't able to confirm that.

I'll be fly fishing both from shore and yak. Will post a report when I get back.

General Talk / purchase fishing license for Baja
« on: May 13, 2014, 12:32:31 PM »
I'm going to Baja (east cape) next week and realize the house we're renting has kayaks -- but I'm also realizing I will need a fishing license to fish from one.  Anyone know if there's a place to buy a license in the Los Barriles area?

Looking for a travel (2 or 3 piece) H sling to take on an upcoming trip.  If anyone has one lying around collecting dust, I can give it a good home... Thanks.

General Talk / Re: Water Woes

No need to let the water run while you wash... Just took a shower (first since Friday!), and turned the shower water off while I "soaped-up". Then turned it back on to rinse. Total shower/water time was 2:36.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: How do you cartop a big heavy kayak?
« on: January 17, 2014, 09:55:49 AM »
Here's how I load my cuda 14 (photos below) -- the cuda is pretty heavy, but I find I can load it easily and without a lot of effort by myself. Not sure how much heavier the hobie PA is...

This set up is inexpensive and dummy proof, so works well for me.
