Wilderness Systems / Tarpon 120 Front Hatch leak
« on: January 03, 2011, 09:50:30 AM »
2009 Tarpon 120

Looks like the front hatch is letting a decent amount of water inside the kayak. To be fair this is usually during those outings that I take a few waves over the front.

Anyone else have this problem? Solutions?

Kayaks / Hobie Mirage Pro Angler

Just curious for the guys who have them.

How hard is it to transport that kayak? Seems pretty heavy. Most videos I've seen show multiple guys moving them.

Worth the $2500?

Thats all I have for now. I'm mainly concerned with transport for a solo angler.

Thank you!

Safety First / The life of a newb and the growth of a kayak angler.
« on: October 04, 2010, 01:46:39 PM »
When I first got into kayak fishing I was so stoked about fishing from a yak that I might not have taken everything into consideration this sport requires. A couple fine examples of newbdom.

- First leopard shark outing and I find out two days before leaving I need a quick release anchor. Luckily my fishing partner that day had an extra.
- I've been wearing a 90's "Hang Ten" PFD because I believed floatation is floatation when it comes to PFD's. Much like wearing a flack jacket to suppress opposing fire this thing is bulky and hot. Spend a little money on a kayak angling PFD. You will thank me later.
- Wheelez. Probably my most frustrating tool to date. Is this thing even a tool? The first time I put my yak on it bumps in the road caused the straps to loosen and my yak falls to the ground dragging the wheels with it. At Capitola these wheelez dug into the dirt as to leave me a nice path to find my way home. At the capitola pier they wouldnt fit down the ramp and I eventually tried to drag the kayak down. With the pier moving way too much to launch alone I had to drag the kayak back up the ramp. Ed was probably amused by the two yellow drag marks going up and down the ramp.
- Nothing like getting to a place to fish only to find out you dont know where and how to launch your kayak. For instance. Capitola looks good but the waves are breaking making it too dicey for a shore launch. You drag your kayak down the hill on to the pier only to find out the pier moves 2 ft up and down with each wave. Now what?
- Try spending a day bass fishing with no anchor as you get spun in circles by the wind and lose any good positions within seconds.
- How about wanting to chase the WSB bite and not having a VHF, or farmer johns. Once you pass the jetty these things tend to remind you there not with you.
- Scupper holes shouldnt be plugged if you anticipate wind blowing gallons of water into your kayak. Or you can test the weight limits of your kayak by keeping them plugged.
- I brought 4 rods and only have 3 rod holders...now what do I do?
- Hey, I think I'll keep these fish, now where do I put em?

These things can and will happen to you if your excitement of fishing takes front stage to preperation. Nothing frustrates me more than not being prepared and kayak fishing has made me feel like a fool more than once. My advice to newbs is to take your time, learn areas you plan to fish inside and out for launching spots, hazards and best times of day to be there. Your equipment should be checked and double checked before each outing until it gets routine.

Overall kayaking is a sport that takes a good deal of time to prep and you dont want to drive 1.5 hours to Capitola just to drag your kayak up and down the ramp.  :smt044

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Question on Yakima Evenkeel saddles
« on: September 15, 2010, 12:58:11 PM »
Hey fellas,

Got a question about Yakima Evenkeel saddles.

I've been getting some shifting on these saddles even though they are locked down and tight. I think some of this is due to lifting the kayak overhead to put it on the saddles and possibly these saddles shifting from that. I've also noticed that the little pads they give you to add more stickem dont really hold either.

Are you guys adding anything to the cross bar for stick? I was thinking of using athletic tape just on the area I want to mount the racks.

Thanks for your help.

I have a used standard GoPro camera - non HD - good condition.

The clip that screws into the rings underneath has been modified so you will need to get a new mounting clip from them if you want to use their setups.

I'll include the 2Mb SD card as well.

Pay It Forward / Total Health

Hello Mooch!

First let me add my apologies but follow that with encouragement and any help I can offer.

The company I work for is in the natural health industry. We Mfg. herbal extracts and phyto concentrates. Since my start with this company I have learned and adopted many natural healing practices. One of the main concepts is to treat the body as a whole instead of specifically treating the issue. While modern medicine will help with urgent treatment holistic health is good to help the body's immune system and overall function increase.

There are many herbs I could suggest like Astragalus, Reishi mushroom and Cordyceps to name a few. Easier to obtain consumables would be things like berries, (blueberry/blackberries), Vitamin C and Green Tea. I chomp on blueberries everyday. I drink 3-4 glasses of green tea and get 1500mg of Vit. C per day. Some will argue this isnt necessary but I havent had so much as a cold since I started consuming these items everyday.

If your in to trying any herbs to help with overall immune function or just want to try some stuff to help the body fight off harmful agents I can put some stuff together for you. Our product is a water soluble powder that can be mixed with any juice or water of your choice. If your not into herbs I would suggest consuming berries and green tea daily. If you already do this your greatly helping your body in the best way you can, IMO.

Our normal pack sizes are 25kg and we dont sell retail so I'm not trying to sell you anything here. I'd be snagging some sample packs for you and if you liked it could just continue to send you samples. 50 grams of each will last a while.

Let me know if your into it and I'll put something together for you.

Recover quickly Mooch and keep a positive energy about you.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Kayak pants vs. wetsuit
« on: August 30, 2010, 04:06:35 PM »
Hey guys. Might be a stupid question but I was looking at kayak pants with neoprene ankles and waist. As far as a wetsuit goes could these pants be used instead? With a paddling jacket over them?

Just curious. They look more comfortable than a wetsuit.....

Thanks!

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / 2/13 Sharkin
« on: February 15, 2010, 12:55:46 PM »
After getting my new T120 rigged with a QRS I was ready to hit the water in search of some Leos.

It wasnt without some help though. I've kicked around in a Hobie maybe 3 times about 5 years back. Other than that, not much time on plastic. It's good to have fishing buds who are generous with their time. It was due to their efforts that putting me on my first (non kick paddle kayak) fish was pretty easy. Cant say enough about fisherman and the great people they tend to be. Never fails.

My crew was met with fog, glass water and a pretty good looking day ahead of us.

We anchored up and hoped not long after we would be talking astrology. Leos are all alike.

Our stars were talking and drags started burning. Is there anything better than watching one of your friends go bendo right in front of you? The laughter, the fish jumping, drag burning and all of it 10 feet away. Gotta love fishing.!

I decided to get in on the act and landed my first legitimate yak fish. Mission accomplished.

I finished the day with 3 sharks landed out of 6 opportunities.

Thanks to all of those board members who helped me in the yak buying decision. I'm hooked.

Lots of info on the T140 but I dont see too much on the T120.

I'll be picking my boat up soon and was wondering if I made a mistake in ordering a T120?

I'll be fishing it everywhere.
