Has anyone here stored their kayaks right-side up? (Opposite of SFHarry's photo)

Almost finished building out my trailer, storage/connection will be my last item

Thanks it seems kind of hard to find anything negative about them or reviews for that matter. I've been really thinking about the big fish 120 and putting a trolling motor in the sonar pod
I was interested in the mako 12' for a while.  When I bought my outback the dealer told me about his experience with them and how they are flimsy and the drive isn't great.  I haven't been in one, but I valued the retailer's experience with just moving them around

You're right, there aren't many negatives besides shipping.  I know first hand finding a dealer and getting through to the company is a bit hard, hit or miss scenario.  MakoNick here new to the forums told me he loves his and is happy with it when I was interested in one and asking his opinion.  I probably would have been fine with it not knowing what else was out there, as it would be my first pedal kayak and I had never even been in one before. I just got a 2019 hobie outback and had no idea what I was missing, I think it's great - was a little sick to my stomach paying for it but after taking it out once I was so happy I dropped the money on it and didn't go cheap.  But, just like other reviews, it's my first pedal so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I think the biggest thing for you is to ask Mako owners to compare the Mako boat and drive system to other kayaks and drive systems, and then you can decide from there...don't just ask straight opinion on it.  Also shipping for the Mako was going to be $300, so that $1300-$1400 price tag which seems awesome really becomes like $1700, which puts you in the price range with solid well-known kayaks backed by decent companies.  There is a dealer in Oceanside, CA that was not very professional or communicative and ended up just not responding to my last two emails - mind you I was actually trying to buy the kayak at that point and he lost the sale.  I'm actually very fortunate that guy didn't care about a sale and turned me off from his business and now I have a 2019 outback which is badass and beautiful.

Wonder how well that will hold up over time.  Not sure I could use foam for indoor/outdoor transportation.

Soft or hard foam, what kind of rating? Assuming you didn't cut to conform

Hi RDods, I'm in the same dilemma as you. When we bought our 2019 outback three wks ago, I just put them on our modified jet ski trailer set up for the Perception Pescudors Pilots we had. Three weeks later, still sitting on the trailer, my wife couldn't get the middle hatch to close  with the tray. After 20 mins trying to figure out why,  we finally figured it was because the v bunks  weren't sitting correctly on the bottom, causing the bottom to deform enough to cause the tray to not sit correctly on the lower lip. I was currently making a truck rack to hold the two kayaks with pvc on the bottom.
I was currently going to store the yaks upright on the pvc, but now am thinking on storing them upside down on trailer on two  2x4's. I too, would love to just store them upright, but don't want to permanently deform them by this.

Oh man fear confirmed - thank you for chiming in with your experience; nice to hear it from a 2019 outback owner as well.  Have you tried repairing the dent with heat or anything else? Curious if you're in for a perma-deformation even if slight, or if it can be fixed.

I'm thinking about contacting Hobie and seeing what they have to say, although I have a feeling I'm going to get the generic formatted response to store it upside down.  I'm sure people store their kayaks right side up without issue, just a matter of finding the trick for the 2019 outback.  I have a friend of a friend who kayak fishes competitively and he stores his PA on the exact trailer I have right side up and doesn't have issue.  Currently waiting on a picture from him of his setup that I will share with everyone here.

Better?

Lol thanks.  Have no clue why that was happening, even worse I'm good with computers and am on one most of the day.

I'll document my trailer this weekend hopefully

Here's a picture of it currently sitting in my garage until I build up the trailer and paint; the sides seem fairly flat compared to my Malibu, and the guys who sold it to me at Kayak City loaded it on my racks right side up next to my Malibu in j-hooks because it's flat.  I live in Novato and was going to Lake Tahoe for the weekend, stopped off in Sacramento and then drove up to Tahoe and back down to Novato with the two kayaks.  I'll take a better picture of the bottom this weekend, hoping I figure out my storage plan by then

Edit: This picture is upside down and not sure why when it's normal on my computer; flipped it around as well and still upside down...

My current rack I custom built for both Native Propels. Still stay on the rack 100% of the time when there not floating, rack can be slid out with the boats on.

Thanks for the reply.  I've heard that storing upside down is the best way to go, but I'm really trying to find a proper way to store right-side up.  People talk about 3" pvc or custom cradles, not sure how well those options work for a 2019 outback.

I've built one of those Harbor Freight trailers and I want to customize it this week with the holiday vacation - I'd like to build something like Benunto's and keep it like that in my garage when not in use.  Just don't want to ruin a new $3k yak.
When I ran my Big Tuna on the Subaru I used Malone seawings and found huge dents in my hull, especially in the summer when it’s hot out. To combat that I used two cedar 1X6 planks that I routered out for carriage bolts recessed in and rounded the edges, I put as much weight as I was comfortable with to prebend them before I tightened them. Just another  option. Do you know any metal workers that could custom bend tubes to match the hull?

I see the planks being used by people but those just seem better suited for angled sides, not so much something with a flatter bottom like I have.  I actually might have a metal worker I can contact about it, but not sure it would be worth it for the price and quality when I should maybe just call up hobie about potential 2019 cradles...I just don't know if those have connections for racks

Hobie Kayaks / Re: Got my new Kayak!

How are you storing your outback when not in use?

Right now it is on a a couple temporary saw horse like stands.  I bought a hoist to put it up against the ceiling in my garage.  Hopefully I will get to installing that over the thanksgiving break.

Hoists are good since they're space savers, just hated/hate taking them down and moving cars around in the garage - if you can deal with the constant setup and take down (and not having to shuffle cars) you'll probably like them.  I use hoists for the kayak(s) I don't take out much but want to keep my new outback on the trailer in the garage so I can just hook up to the car and drive off.

Hey Scotty how do you store this at home when not in use? Looks like you have it facing up on bars in your garage?

2019 Outback!   So freakin pumped.  Had to take a loan out on the WAF account as all the brewing gear hasnt sold yet,  but so far so good.  Totally worth it.

I am waiting on some gear to arrive now so I can actually go use it.  I even had to borrow my buddies truck because I didnt have a way to transport it safely.  Hopefully by this weekend I will be outfitted and ready to rock.

How are you storing your outback when not in use?

Introductions / Re: Newbie and future 2019 Hobie Outback owner
« on: November 19, 2018, 09:02:47 AM »
Hi all,

Just a quick introduction here. I just joined NCKA because I'm planning on picking up a new 2019 Hobie Outback later this year or early 2019. I'm based out of San Ramon. I fish the lakes, rivers, bay, and surf, but have never been kayak fishing. Before I even head out to buy my Outback, I'll check out the many posts here to learn as much as I can about kayak fishing. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions, so I'm hoping you could guide me along the way. Hope to meet many of you on the water, and join in on a few kayak hookups.

Best regards,
'A-Rod'

Have you pulled the trigger yet?
