That was a great way to capture and share your trip.  Great job.

2
Great report and some awesome fish.  That last dodo was incredible :thumleft:.  The trip sounded like it was fun for all.

I will be camping in Big Sur this weekend with my Wife (yaker, but a non-fisherperson) and another couple.  If we can get away for a while, us guys would like to do some surf/shore fishing up there.  Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on where to go and what to use.  Are rockfish possible from the shore?  I will be camping at Fernwood Campground not far from the other Big Sur campgrounds.  Any help would be great.  Not bringing the yak this trip :sad10:.  I hear kayaking and fishing there is awesome.

Thanks,

Mike

Nice fish.  It looks like you'll need a bigger ice chest.

Good job

Alan,  Great pics.  Looks like you had a great time.  I went to Alaska few years ago for a "family" trip and did a 3/4 day trip for Halibut out of Seward.  Nothing near the size of fish you guys got into.  Can't wait to go back on a "fishing trip".

Thanks for sharing.

Mike

Nice fish, WTG.  One of these days I'll get back out on the water for salmon.

Nice pics.  Nice brown.  lots of snow around Echo lake

I was up in the desolation wilderness this past weekend (7/7-7/9) also with my wife and another couple.  We camped at Wrights lake Friday night and headed out to Lyons lake from the Lyons creek trailhead on Sat morning. It sure was beautiful up there.  Lots of snow on the ground still up at the lake.  Fished Lyons creek hiking in and out as well as parts of Lyons Lake.  Caught couple dozen or so brooks and a few rainbows flyfishing.  Beautiful fish, biggest was maybe 10-11 inches out of the lake.  All released.  I just love getting out into the back woods.

Can't wait for next backcountry trip

Another newbie,
It was nice to meet everyone on Sat.  I was the one with the SIK.  Mooch said "I had balls", I really think he meant, "Are you sure you want to do that?".  Swamped it during the launch.  I was able to pump out most of the water.  I chummed breakfast shortly after getting out there, then started to freeze my butt off.  Fished some bait then headed in.  Swamped it on the landing.  Thanks to the guys who helped pull me out of the surf.

All in all, a learning experience.
1. The fish finder does work like it is supposed to (at least with bait), so I installed that ok
2. I need to get a skirt for launches and landings.
3. brought way to much crap on board. MINIMIZE
4. need a wet suit.
5. The yak actually handle itself fine pnce I was out there
6. when I can afford one I need a SOT yak.
7. no fish , but learned what and where for next time talking to a couple of the guys.

You'll see me out there again! There was a great group of guys out there on Sat
Thanks, Mike

I'm already headed up that way this coming weekend.  Already got my permits.  I'll be in the Lyons lake area.  I'll be bringing the fly fishing gear and no Yak.  I'll post a short report when I get back.

Where are your permits for?

I'm gonna try and be there for a 6 am launch also.  I'll be coming over from Sacramento, so an early morning for me.  It looks like I will be part of the ever growing beach launch virgin crowd!!  This will be my first time outside of the Bay and the second time out in salt water, so any advice as I go would be appreciated.  I think I have enough tackle and what not, some advice on that once I'm there would be wonderful.

I've never been to LiM.  Looking a google earth and the earlier post everyone will be at the south end of the beach just where Linda Mar Blvd ends?  I'll be looking for yaks on the beach.

See Ya there

Mike

Went out for the first time in my newly renovated sit in kayak.  Installed all the goodies.  Thanks for everyone who uses this site, I was able to get a lot of useful information, every bit helped.

Hit the water at 7am, very low tide.  Caught plenty of bait along the pier.  First time using a sabiki rig, it worked like a charm.  Built a bait tube that worked great too.  Got slammed by something early on using frozen squid, took the squid and the hook, so went back over with live bait.  Got slammed again, this time it stuck.  Came up with a 30 inch 10 1/2 lb halibut.  Had a lot more takes, but could hook anything else.  Got off the water about noon just as the wind started picking up.

Looking forward to more trips out in my new fishing yak.

Mike
