A starter made in your own environment will do best. A great reference for all things bread and pizza is "Flour, Water, Salt, Yeast" by Ken Forkish

CA Regulations / Re: Commercial Fishing from Kayak
« on: June 08, 2023, 12:24:54 PM »
Is the commercial license tied to a species?  I know that commercial boat shave different seasons/area they can fish, but do they need specific permits for specific fish?

There are extra permits required beyond those I already outlined for "limited entry" and "restricted access" fisheries.  Some examples are bottom trawling for california halibut, herring, market squid from those boats you see that light up the water like daytime, and dungeness crab.  What I've outlined is the minimum cost for someone who wants to fish for halibut no differently than we all already do from our kayaks, but without the recreational bag limits.

In other words, if the kayaker you're talking with says he's commercial and he doesn't even have CF numbers on his boat... you already know they didn't check all the boxes.  If they didn't spent at least $700 in fees, they probably haven't checked all the boxes.  If they say "oh, I'm just keeping these 5 halibut for personal use today under my commercial license, so I don't have to land them in E-Tix," they haven't checked all the boxes to be legal.  You get the point.

That's kinda what I figured. Was curious if the commercial license covered, say, lingcod or striped bass too.

there is no commercial fishery for Striped Bass. Its illegal to possess them on a commercial vessel. (similar to Sturgeon, which started the whole (most recent) diehard debacle)

Take of Lingcod is permitted under Halibut permit as its common bybatch in the ocean

Striper was a bad example, but I get the idea.  I know some fisheries are federally managed, vs some are state managed.  I think the root of my question is do state managed fisheries require different permits for different species.  Seems like yes, for some.

Different question: Can a person hold both a recreational and commercial fishing license?

Just want to fully understand what diehard did wrong.  He is licensed as a commercial fisherman, and his kayak is registered as a commercial fishing vessel.  He used his kayak (commercial fishing vessel) to fish for sturgeon.  Did he intend to sell his catch?  Can he not use his kayak for recreational fishing, even if he does not intend to sell his catch, and is following sport fishing rules?  Does he not have a recreational fishing license and sturgeon tag?

You can possess both licenses, but a vessel registered as commercial is only that from my understanding
It is illegal to possess sturgeon on a commercial vessel

CA halibut doesn't freeze particularly well from a food standpoint and is not sold widely out of state or internationally for that matter.

How about limits? I talk to boaters with commercial licenses licenses at the SC harbor pretty regularly. I was under the impression that they have a limit of 5 halibut, whereas on NCKA someone posted that there are no limits. I don’t know where to look for that info online…

Definitely no limit for commercial halibut. A small commercial fisherman was posting on NextDoor a while back selling his halibut. One day he alone caught 79 fish.

I find it hard to believe that anyone could catch 79 halibut hook-and-line in 1 day...

When I decked on a commercial halibut boat we fished 6 rods and had a few 100 fish days. That's commercial fishing. Seeing that first hand, being a big fish buyer for a long time (thousands of lbs/week), I still think party boats do more damage.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: dismal tbay today

Good effort as always, Charles!

Out of concern for this fishery, I submitted a petition last fall to reduce the daily bag limit on California halibut between Pt Reyes and Bodega Head to one fish per day. But the CA Fish and Game Commission, in all their distant wisdom, rejected the proposal.

The slower than normal fishing in Tomales Bay, especially around Hog Island this year, should not be considered strong evidence of a damaged fishery.  Lots of pressure, unusually clear water in the spring allowing higher than normal moss growth out to 25 feet, changes in bait volume, etc., all contribute.  Also, this area gets a ton of pressure, compared to decades past, but that's not an indication that the whole fishery in the area is in trouble.  Anecdotally, lots of fish to be found if you start looking where everyone else isn't already fishing.

Agreed. Been fishing Tomales pretty hard for a few years now and haven't seen much change in the numbers. If anything, I'm seeing more fish this year than previous seasons. The shaker:keeper ratio is also encouraging.

There's a lot of people fishing a small part of the bay with the same, not always effective technique. I think it would be eye opening for people to start fishing different locations and techniques.

And actually, this fishery has less pressure than historical averages. There used to be a much higher population in the area and way more commercial fishing activity than currently exists.

Underlayers, pouring water down your wetsuit periodically and prep h have all helped me with this same issue

Commercial harvest in a slot limit would be more like it but defeating the central valley guides lobby won't be easy. No reason in my mind to not allow a commercial fishery for this populous, delicious, non native fish

I'm not sweaty, but get a lot of heat rash. I have a few solutions:

1) moisture wicking underlayers like merino wool long underwear and longsleeved tops
2) prep H seems to help in spots like behind my knees where I would normally get a rash
3) I now carry an empty water bottle to fill up with seawater and periodically dump into my wetsuit. Feels great and is effective for "flushing" as well
4) jump off and take a dip now and then

Kayak Fly Fishing / Re: West slope intel

Not sure about the north but I will be stopping by the middle fork for a few hours on my way to Bridgeport tomorrow and can give an update about that spot hopefully. They typically plant it pretty heavily for summer (middle fork) but I can usually find a few decent wild browns hiding in the less pressured spots. I'll try to remember to post an update tomorrow.

That would be awesome. I actually may do the MF next week. More diverse water within short driving distance from base camp....

I've always had great results with a setup I learned from a former comm/current charter boat capt-60 lb mono and 16 oz leads up to 30 ft deep. I don't usually fish any deeper than that for halibut. The stiff, heavy line eliminates with dodgers. I think constant bouncing, near vertical lines and dropper height are very important. I always attach my dropper to a slider as well

Thank you all for your well wishes and concern. I feel lucky to have the care team I do and feel they are doing a great job, despite whatever limitations exist.

Those of us that work with our hands in the skilled trades or restaurant business (both of which I do/have) practically always have small cuts or skin openings on our hands-makes it difficult to be so diligent...

I've been dealing with some health issues that I suspect originated from fishing-related exposure to a very rare bacteria. Last May (2021), one of my fingers began feeling a bit stiff. I shrugged it off as an injury sustained while fishing or working that wasn't significant enough for me to remember in the moment. You know how it is-you whack your hand on something, it hurts for a few minutes, then you move on and forget about it.

I figured even in the worst-case scenario of a fracture, it was a finger and the doctor would tell me to rest it, tape it up, etc. This stiffness and swelling progressed over months and it was clear that the situation was not improving. There was not pain per se, more of an occasional ache, and nothing drastic to suggest that there was a serious problem-just a persistent, now limiting swelling.

My PCP made a diagnosis and told me to rest the hand. After a few weeks, I got an xray which read normal. At this point, I'm worried about work (as a cabinetmaker) perpetuating the condition and am forced to take some time off. A specialist took a look at it and concluded that not much could be done except rest and assured me that there was no trauma and nothing to repair surgically, etc.

An MRI confirmed the original diagnosis of tenosynovitis-an inflammation of the tissue that surrounds a tendon, in this case, my digital flexor tendon which bends my left index finger. My range of motion was limited to about 30% of normal. I received a cortisone shot which alleviated the swelling but after two weeks, the swelling returned.

A couple of months later, I had a surgical procedure to clean out the inflamed tissue from my finger with the goal of restoring range of motion, and also taking a tissue sample to find the cause of the swelling. In the months before surgery, I developed some symptoms of a bacterial infection (lymphangitis) and went on antibiotics, which also alleviated some of the swelling in my finger. This suggested that an infection was causing my hand issues, but not your typical staph-like bacteria-something called a non tuberculosis mycobacterium. They are very rare, slow growing and extremely difficult to diagnose and treat.

Now a couple of months after my surgery, my finger is still swollen and uncomfortable. I have working with an infectious disease specialist to properly diagnose and treat my infection. It will require advanced lab work (PCR testing at the University of Washington), a combination of 2-3 antibiotics taken for several months or more, and potentially more surgery.

I believe that I was exposed to whatever this is while fishing. Around the time symptoms first developed, the only species I would have been fishing for is striped bass, which have terribly sharp dorsal and anal fin spines. I suspect I got a puncture from one of these spines which introduced the bacteria to the tissue deep in my finger.

I don't think this is something that is likely to happen to any of you, but something to be aware of should you develop any similar symptoms....ahhhh the joys of fishing
