Title: Is there a cliff notes of CDFW Fishing Regs?
Post by: Fear58 on June 24, 2020, 07:38:13 AM
Last I read through CDFW's fishing regulation book (15 years ago or so), I got the impression that you should at least complete one semester of law school before doing so. I've tried to take note of changes year to year since then, but I think I should just read it again.

Is it still written in a quasi-legalese style? Are there any good sites/books/apps that summarize the regs for us?

What part of the regs are causing you difficulty? I think the fishing regs are a walk in the park compared to the hunting regs

Maybe I'm confusing the two... Realized that cdfw is moving away from print and publishing them in PDF, it doesn't seem so bad.

There aren’t cliff notes in table form like Oregon has, but there are Interactive maps for both freshwater and saltwater that you just click on the area you want to fish and it tells you what is open and what is closed. Size and bag limits aren’t that hard to remember and you can just write those on your bump board if you need the reference.

I'm with Fear58. It is confusing. I was never a good student, so I'm not able to sit and read the whole book looking for the info I need.  That's why it's nice to have a young studious son to look things up for me.   :bigsmurf:

I agree they can be confusing or sometimes difficult to locate the information.  I remember several years ago while fishing for salmon at the mouth of the Klamath, DFW paid my group a visit at our campsite and inspected our catch.  We were unaware that the rules changed which prohibited the processing of our catch (Filets or steaks) until we returned home.  I handed the Warden the hard copies of the regs, and it took him 10 minutes to find them for us.  Not the easiest read in my opinion.

Yes.

It seems like every river is divided into multiple sections, and each section has its own rules, which vary depending on the time of year you are fishing. It take the easy route when freshwater fishing. I always use barbless artificial lures, I never keep anything, and I never go freshwater fishing.
