For Sale / Tarpon 160 Dual Hatch
« on: July 24, 2023, 07:06:26 PM »
Selling my Wilderness Systems Tarpon 160. Have it listed in CL for $800 but if anyone is interested will happily sell for $600 to NCKA members. I don't use it enough and my girlfriend is tired of it taking up space.

General Fishing Tips / Beginner Steelhead Tips?
« on: January 16, 2021, 04:23:55 PM »
Looking to broaden my horizons and  target steelhead this winter. I tried a few times last season but mostly one-off's here and there with friends, none of us having much idea what we were doing.

I fished San Lorenzo a few times, which I've since heard argued against due to the limited numbers and the stress anglers can cause steelies.

I also fished Pescadero, trying out a fly rod for the first time. Fun, but not too productive.

Now I'm looking at waters that hold more robust steelhead populations and most of what I'm seeing is centered around Eureka area, which is a 5 1/2+ hr drive for me. A little much for a day trip. Has anyone found success fishing the Russian River? Or any other options closer to Santa Cruz/Monterey?

Also, recommendations on gear? I plan to take my 5wt fly rod just for fun, but have a lighter spinning setup. Was considering getting an ugly stick and a baitcaster but mainly because I've never used a baitcaster before and want an excuse to buy one. No real strategy behind it.

Craftsmen's Corner / Roof racks
« on: June 13, 2020, 02:37:51 PM »
I have a Tacoma with a shell and roof racks (Yakima round cross bars) that I'm planning on using to transport my Yak. I was hoping to throw some pool noodles/foam on the cross bars, strap my kayak down, and call it a day. Trying to avoid dropping $100+ on kayak roof racks. Is there any reason this is a bad idea?

Site Discussion / Site navigation suggestions

I'm new, so if this has been covered apologies.

Why no "next" and "previous" buttons for navigating through pages in topics and on boards? I primarily browse on my phone, and every time I want to go to the next page in a topic I zoom in on the page numbers at the botom and hope I touch the correct one. It would be a lot easier to have a button that takes you to the next page/previous page. Or am I missing that somewhere?

General Fishing Tips / Flathead Lake
« on: June 07, 2020, 10:55:16 AM »
I'm going out to MT for a few weeks to stay with my girlfriend/her family at their cabin on Flathead lake. Anyone have experience fishing out there? I've been doing some research on fishing the lake itself, as well as the surrounding streams and rivers. Hoping to do a mix of spin casting and fly fishing because it sounds like there's great opportunities for both.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / First time rigging up. Advice?
« on: June 05, 2020, 06:25:46 PM »
I recently snagged a Tarpon 160 (not sure on year) off Craigslist for $250 and finally have some time to check it out and get it ready for some fishing.

First off, I need to clean it and double check it doesn't leak. It looks well used, and the guy I bought it from said his brother used to fish it off 4 mile beach. Looks like he dragged it there occasionally, but the scratches don't look like they punctured anywhere.

I need a seat. The one that came with it is a small plastic back rest that looks extremely uncomfortable. Recommendations?

The rear storage is an oddly shaped hatch, doesn't look like I can go the easy milk crate route. I got a Scotty rail mount/rod holder for a quick forward rod solution, and there looks to be 2 places to drill and install flush tube rod holders behind the seat. Would rails be a good option to consider?

I need to figure out storage for a net and/or gaff as well, which is where I'm a little stumped without the milk crate. I was planning to do 4 pvc rod holders to use for gear storage, but unless I can figure out how to mount a crate over the hatch I dont think that's in the cards.

Introductions / Introduction
« on: April 09, 2020, 11:30:37 PM »
Hey all, just started kayak fishing this month, what poor timing. Got a lifetime tamarack angler from my friend's dad who wasn't using it. Been out twice from Santa Cruz, and got a smaller ling my second time.

Now the beaches are closed and I'm looking for ways to get out on the water.
