Package sets are good because the lines are matched to the rod, but my only issue is they come with a floating line.  If you plan to fish only creeks, then a floating line is good, but if you plan to fish stillwater "lakes" then you want an intermediate and a type 4 line.

My go to line in stillwater for bass, trout, bluegills and crappie is an intermediate line, I use the 95% of the time.  then I use my type 4 when I need to get a little deeper.

Redington also makes a good package set.

And yes, a 5 weight is the best all around rod size, I have like 5 of them.  It is my go to rod size.

The CRP is one of my favorite places for a relaxing paddle. Been going there for many years.  I've never really found the fishing to be all that great there. Maybe I never found the right spot.
As mentioned above, the water hyacinth gets very thick in the summer.

Al

I caught my one and only shellcracker there.  Love that waterway, have had some awesome days there fishing.  Been going there for about 20 or so years.

This is my favorite part of the story:

I had a stellar day at Seco on Saturday.  Caught between 15 and 20 fish, trout crappie and bass.  didn't get a bluegill though, bummed about that.

Caught everything on a black wiggle tail and baitfish imitation.  Probably go back this weekend again.

Good striper section.

I'd join but I am heading to Seco.  Let me know if you hook up with anything.

I'll be at Seco this Saturday.  Been fishing it for years and know the lake pretty good.  Yes it can be tough, but when the bite is on, it is on.  Perfect time of the year to get the grand slam, trout, bass, bluegill and crappie.  If you come out, I'll be the fly fisherman in the float tube.

My son and I will be at Rancho Seco on Saturday.
I'll be on my yellow Mini-X.

See you out there, I'll be in my float tube, I have a rod holder so you will see rods sticking up from my float tube.  Pretty easy to spot, usually the only float tube out there.

I'm east of Folsom too.  Can you put a yak on Rancho Seco?
also looking at Bullards and Berryessa - and some Ocean after rockfish reopens for boats

Yep, you can put a boat on Seco as long as you only use an electric motor.  If you have a gas motor, you just need o put a bag around the bottom of the motor.

My go to rod is a 5 weight, I have 5 of them I think.  I have a plethora of other fly rods.

If you have any questions or want to meet up some time drop me a message.  I'm headed to Seco Sunday for trout, bass, bluegills and crappie.  I love getting the grand slam on the same fly and line out there.

The main trick with fly fishing is matching the line to the rod.  If the line isn't right for the rod, even I have a hard time casting it.

My preferred manufacturer is TFO, the rods are fair priced, great warranty, and cast great.  I'll take my $150 rod and put it up against any $700 Simms or other rod.  As for reels, you don't need anything special, all it does is hold the line.  The only time I spend descent money on reels is for my bigger rods where I need a god drag system.  But for bass, I have yet to have one take me to the reel and I have caught them in the 25" range.

When I fish for bass, here is my setups.

5 weight rod with an intermediate line.  I use this one the most

5 weight rod with a type 3 line.  I use this 2nd most.

Those are also my go to for trout, bluegills and crappie.  Carp when I can find them.

Then to get deeper and throw bigger flies:

6 weight rod with a type 8 line.

Of course I also have a 5 weight with a floating line for top water.

And a 5 weight with a floating line that has an integrated intermediate tip.  My go to at places like Davis Lake when the trout are working the surface.

For surf I mostly use a 7 weight with a length of t14 for distance and throwing bigger flies, plus you never know what you might hook into.

Nothing worse than the old sewer lines that leach into the bay on a daily basis for many many years now.

At Capell just park in the dirt off to the side.  People do it all the time.

So will this "officially" be the last Crabfest?

We booked our spot!  I just found a sticker from the first one we went to in 2013.

Yes, this will "officially" be the last Crabfest.

My hope is that it will continue on as a Crab and Chill style event in the future.

I know we will keep going the same time every year.

I'll start collecting some raffle prizes to, we are going to send out the final Crabfest big time!
