Marmite,

What no more pictures  :smt005.

Dam that DFG fellows joke must of freaked you out for a minute and made your mind race to remember the regs (those guys are usually friendly until.....kinda like a building inspector).

Good point about the net I had heard that I always needed to be carrying a net with a min. 18" diameter and did for about a year. Only used it once, typically just measure the fish in the water and try and pull it by hand if its close, guess I better keep carrying it around (inside the hatch might be good enough).

Thanks for the info on the bait, rig, location, and weather should be easy with all that  :smt044. Apparently need a larger reel with lot of line for those fish as well.

Otter called me last night around midnight said he might shoot down (early early) this morning an meet up with Sharky, hope he went and the weather is calm they might be right there, right now.

Nice fish and post,

Jim,

Nice write up.

I haven't fished SC yet but had heard about the octopus that are about. Have any octopus fishing advice? Is there an area or type of underwater structure they like best?

Reading about the squid in MB makes me want to go there but octopus from Santa Cruz sounds nice also.

You have the on the water photos , the catch photos, and the dinner shots, excellent, and nice variety of fish.

Thanks for the post,

Yep you can eat that..

Took these covered them in salt for five hours and then soaked in sushi vinegar, created Saba that can be placed on sushi rice. We will see how it turns out, apparently this species is also known as California Mackerel in Japan.

The Sardines we covered with salt, burnt on a grill and ate with lemon and soy sauce at a party this evening went through most of them the day after they where caught. Also ate them yesterday Katsu style fried with bread crumbs yum yum.

Otter you missed out, there was two bands and a whole pig.

Oh, and the water and wind where dead calm at 6AM with bait and large fish far away breaching. No real tide and no drift so we hardly moved in the water

We had to head back to get to the airport at noon just as the wind picked up but I suspect there was a real good drift for the rest of the day.

Perhaps Holy picked up something?

Otter and I ran out to Tamales yesterday to do some fish'n.

Slept about two hours with visions of WSB and Halibut on the brain. Super foggy but burned off by 12. Bait up the wazoo and no large fish in sight (probably all full). Ran into Holy Toledo on the water, nice to meet you Holy.

Here are a few photos for your enjoyment   :smt001.

Nice, Looks like some Rainbows and Brown?

I like that lake but last time I was there was before the stocking for the season and it took 4 hours to get one fish. Are you trailing the worms behind a flasher or a dodger? Some one else on this board recommended that to me and it really seemed to make a difference.

Super cool haven't heard of catching squid yet and it would be nice to eat (kinda tired of rockfish).

What about octopus? I heard that people catch them by leaving jars on the bottom and pulling them up later. Anyone done that?

WSB sounds nice as well.....

B&B,

Nice description of the conditions and action I felt like I was there.

The couple times I stopped to check that place out it looked good for a few minutes and then some fat swell comes in and I get back in the car and head south to PP.

Ever since I quit trying to relieve myself by kneeling and piss'n over the side of the boat I seem to fall in a lot less. I remember one very calm day at Paradise after a few beverages  couldn't wait no longer and tryed the over the side routine and over I went. In the rush to get back in the boat forgot to take care of business and so I tryed again.... splash in again my homes was laughing at the double dunk  :smt005. A couple beverages later he gives it a try and just after I warn him in he goes  :smt044 :smt044.... Started carrying a large zip lock (and I think I found out what the little hatch in the floor of the Prowler is for).

Still get rolled by the surf when trying to land sometimes, always seems to get my adrenalin going looking over the shoulder and trying to time it.

Thanks for the report and good point about the compass,

See ya out there

Muir is nice,

Good food those herring, seems like alot of the crabs I saw this year were smaller and with a weak shell.

Sometimes running a swim bait or a bucktail behind the bait can pay off with a large fish as well.

Good luck,

Lets see ..

Otter and I went out for some Marin and Mantara fishing. Still no photos from the southern trip but here are a few from Marin, the first of two weekend trips. We paddled out just after a pretty tall set of waves and saw right off the bat a lot of bait activity quickly jigged up some mackerel and sardines as the seals and birds made a lot of commotion on the surface. Dragged the sand for awhile with one #40 leader cut off cleanly with no load on the line and later a heavily shredded sardine ... sharks?

Moved to the rocks and caught and re lased a couple of gophers but pretty slow for and hour and them Otter drags up a big 38" Ling 20 feet from shore and has to paddle out of the shore break before he can get the fish to the boat. After a short debate we decide to keep since it was all we had come up with other than bait fish so far. He bleeds it and heads back to put it on ice, an hour later I get a pretty decent 19" gassy but as it turns out the fish fit in the Lings mouth.

A week later we headed out near Montara for batches of underlings, a greenling and eventually four nice keeper Cabs (No photos yet from Otter) one foul hooked and released. that was a nice new area that I hadn't paddled around before. Also kept getting visits from porpoises some went right under the yak.

So anyways here's the shots of the bait, launch and Ling.

Cheers Tsuri-

Red,

Right on.... flashers and minnows. No depth finder (rely on others and intuition for that) but the depth chart will help.

Not familiar with Kwickfish/Flatfish or even a dodger for that matter.

I'll check in with you next time I am up in the area.

Thanks for the info,

(That wall at Bliss is really cool - it's like 600' deep)

Looks deep.

I was wondering how deep it was, I kept casting out a lure and it didn't seem to touch down. Didn't catch any fish from shore there other than an accidentallly snaged minnow out of a school of them near the edge of the dorp off.

Definety thought about bringing the wetsuit and snorkel next time along with the kayak.

I might need to get some fins as well.

Shucks,

Cody has the same boat I do and looks to be fishing the same water, competition is heating up  :smt001 :smt001.

Above Red Lake is some great backcountry skiing in the winter as well, haven't fished there yet.....

What kind of traps? Colapsable? Bait  :spam1::smt003 40 per trap that is darn good.

Thanks for the post,
