Gearing Up and Rigging Up / latex-free drysuit?
« on: January 06, 2016, 07:48:08 PM »
I've been considering getting a drysuit for a while now, and just started seriously looking at the options today. From what I've seen so far, it seems they all use latex for the seal around the neck and wrists. It's not like I'll die if I touch latex, but my skin becomes red, irritated, and itchy---very unpleasant. So, I'm wondering are any drysuits available that don't use latex, or is there some easy way to avoid skin contact with the latex? Thanks.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / iPhone GPS
« on: January 06, 2016, 01:17:32 PM »
Although it's focused on backpacking, a lot of the info here is applicable to kayak fishing (with Gaia GPS replaced by Navionics):

http://www.adventurealan.com/iphone-gps-map-backpacking/

The parts about extending the battery life seems particularly useful, especially for multi-day trips or any time when recharging might be problematic.

Site Discussion / Real-time fishing reports?
« on: December 31, 2015, 08:01:46 PM »
I think it would be cool to have a board for real-time fishing reports. I'd bet that most NCKA'ers already have the technology to post such reports. And if there was a place dedicated to such reports, it would be a lot easier to follow, as opposed to trying to sort them out from the usual report/hookup place(s). Ideally, these real-time reports would automatically migrate to the usual fishing report board (or just vanish) after some (relatively short) period of inactivity, so that any post would be a clear sign of something that's happening now (or nearly so).

General Talk / what does "squared seas" mean?
« on: December 22, 2015, 10:41:41 PM »
I've seen the term "squared seas" in the marine forecast, but I'm not sure exactly what that means. According to this site,
http://www.pacificpowerboating.com/Articles/Kevo0808Web.pdf
it means that the period and swell are the same (like 9 feet at 9 seconds, but not 9 feet at 10 seconds). Other places give far more generic descriptions, and I'm curious what NOAA actually means when they use this term in a forecast.

General Talk / non-solar ways to cut electric bill?
« on: December 09, 2015, 08:35:00 PM »
We've got a 1400 ft^2 house in the Santa Cruz mountains with 1/2 acre of land and big trees all around. I can't picture solar being an option here, so I'm wondering what else we can do to reduce our electric bill, which currently varies from $90 to more than $150 per month, and averages about $130.

We've got a 280 gallon propane tank, but that just runs a small thru-wall heater in one bedroom and a stand-by generator, so it's only been refilled once in the last 3 years. Our monthly propane costs are minimal in winter and non-existent in the summer. We've got an electric water heater, electric range, small pellet stove (only heats 800 ft^2 of space), microwave, no AC, a bunch of electronic gadgets, and all lighting is LED.

Maybe I'm wrong, but by my calculations, there would not be a big savings from converting the water heater to propane. And we don't use the range all that much---we microwave more often than not. So, I'm at a loss as to how to reduce the bill. And my wife complains about it every time it's over $100, so I'd like to come up with something that would make a consistent dent in it...

Craftsmen's Corner / Scotty mount on curved surface?
« on: November 29, 2015, 05:27:36 PM »
I'd like to put a Scotty flush mount near the front of my Hobie (centered). That area is not flat---more of an inverted V shape. So, I figure I could cut a small piece of starboard and file it down on one side to fit the profile of the kayak, giving a flat surface to attach the mount. I'm sure this will work, as I've done similar things before.

But it seems like a better option would be to use a heat gun and bend the Scotty mount so that it fits the kayak profile. Anybody ever try this? Any thought on whether it will work?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / solar panel _inside_ kayak???

This guy claims to charge his fishfinder battery using a solar panel mounted inside his kayak:

Is this plausible?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Garmin Virb Action Cam --- preliminary review
« on: November 14, 2015, 10:25:00 PM »
My GoPro Hero 3 died, so I bought this discontinued Garmin Virb model:

http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Action-Camera-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B00EOHUVV8

I got it on Thursday and haven't had a chance to try it out on the water, but did test it biking, mounted on top of my bike helmet. In case you're interested, here's some clips from the biking video, shot with the Virb at 760p and 60fps:

http://cs.sjsu.edu/~stamp/video/other/bike_virb.mp4

For comparison, here's some biking video clips I shot a while back with my GoPro:

Here are some +'s and -'s for the Virb, based on my limited use and observations so far.

+ The Virb has a viewfinder built in, and although it's pretty dim, it's still a positive feature, IMHO.

+ It seems rugged, and it's water resistant (to 1 meter) without a case, so it should work well for above-water shots on the kayak.

+ Battery life is supposed to be good (3 hours recording time), and it supports 64GB micro SD cards. A lot of the cheap cameras can only use 32GB cards.

+ It comes with an adapter that connects to GoPro mounts.

- There is a waterproof case, but it's sold separately and lists for $40, although I found them at West Marine for $20.

- I assumed that since it can be used without a case, I'd be able to get some decent audio. But the mic just got wind noise in my test. Some people online claim to have had success with a cheap external microphone, so I might try that.

The Virb is heavier than the GoPro, but that's not going to be an issue on the kayak. Also, the oblong shape means that some mounting positions are not feasible (head strap, chest mount), but the shape might actually be an advantage when dragging it thru the water (with the waterproof case, of course).

Anyways, just thought I'd post this preliminary review in case anybody is considering the camera. Since it's discontinued and discounted, I don't think they'll be available for much longer.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / PowerFilm R-7 solar panel
« on: November 14, 2015, 05:12:04 PM »
This is a 7 W rollable solar panel that's supposed to be waterproof and seems to be durable:

I've been thinking about trying one of these on my kayak. The size is right and it should significantly extend battery life on a long/multi-day trip.

I haven't found it anywhere for less than $125, and that's what it's listed for here:

https://jet.com/product/PowerFilm-R-7-7w-Rollable-Solar-Panel-Charger/f76bfbe367964d61b21ba11887cb930e

But, at that site, you can get 15% off on your first order (promo code "15NOW") and there's no tax or shipping, so it's $106 total.

Safety First / radio check protocol?
« on: November 12, 2015, 08:41:27 PM »
When I launch, I usually do a radio check on ch. 69 and usually get a response. But, what do you do if you get no response? Are there other channels that can/should be used for this? I'd like to know my radio is working before I might need it...

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / GoPro alternatives
« on: November 08, 2015, 07:13:26 AM »
It looks like I managed to damage my GoPro beyond repair. It was OK, but it had some problems (battery drainage being the most annoying), so I'm considering alternatives. I noticed that there are some cheap imitation GoPro cameras that go for $50 to $100 and use the same cases (and such) as a real GoPro, and many of them get good surprisingly reviews---here's one example:

http://www.amazon.com/DBPOWER-Waterproof-Action-Batteries-Accessories/dp/B00PAH9AJA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1446931478&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=waterproof+camera&psc=1

So, I'm wondering if anybody has any experience with one of these cheaper cameras on a kayak. Also, if you have any experience (positive or negative) with higher-priced GoPro alternative (the Garmin Virb looks intriguing), I'd like to hear about that too. Thanks.

Safety First / PLB --- ACR 2881 ResQLink+
« on: November 04, 2015, 02:49:36 PM »
This PLB sells for about $250 (maybe a bit cheaper some places online), and there is currently a $50 mail in rebate, so I got one today. It attaches nicely to the shoulder of my PFD, where it's completely out of the way and not even noticeable, and in case it ever falls in the water, it floats. Now I just hope that I never have to use it...

Fish ID sub-forum / ID this fish based on how it fights?
« on: October 19, 2015, 06:48:25 AM »
At the fishing derby in SC yesterday, I hooked into something heavy---definitely the biggest thing I've ever had on the end of my line. It broke off after about 20 minutes, before I could see it. I suspect it was a shark, since a couple of them (smooth-hound, I believe they said...) were caught nearby, and I also hooked something that sliced thru my 30# mono leader just a few minutes before.

Here's a brief video of the first minute or so after the fish hit:

The way it fought was very distinctive, and unlike anything else I've caught. It's probably not noticeable from the video, but usually when it made a run, there was a strange high frequency component, almost like catching a mackerel on light tackle, but with a heavy weight behind it. There were no acrobatics or long horizontal runs, so I don't think it was a thresher. It definitely did not fight like a halibut, ray, lingcod, etc.

Places to Launch and Camp / Santa Cruz harbor launch --- rate increase
« on: October 02, 2015, 12:35:28 PM »
This morning I launched from the SC harbor ("A" dock/kayak/SUP launch) and they now charge $6 to launch (used to be $5) and $12.50 to launch and park (used to be $10)...
