Thanks for the report.
Sounds similar to what I saw last weekend.

How concentrated were the stripers?
Not very concentrated. I might hit Napa Friday. I think they concentrate more there.
Might hit the Napa River on Friday as well.

It's a species of damselfish. Most people call them blacksmith or blue perch.

Whether people accept it or not, the boom bubble that many have been living in has burst. Gas, rent, food or a $4K kayak ?  Easy decision for most right now. Bad timing unfortunately.

If adults can mistakenly ID coho then I dont see why this is any different.
Yes he tried to cover up but the young man is what about 18-19 yrs old? Not saying that's an excuse but it can happen.

It's not the adult vs. teenager issue.  It's the thousands of subscribers on youtube issue.  If you put yourself out there as an ambassador to the sport, you need to act like it.  And again, when others in his situation have made this kind of mistake, they take the videos down.  This clown tried to edit out the incriminating stuff without any acknowledgement of the problem to chase those likes and views.
^^^ This!

If he had made the error, apologized, taken the video down and used the experience to change his ways moving forward ... all good. But to take down the original video, edit out the most incriminating parts, and repost it ... that's just doubling down on stupid. Zero pity for this fool.

I'd like to see the data myself because I've only heard the results second hand, but I understand that there are recent trawl studies showing a marked decrease in both striped bass population and average size in the Sacramento River system. It's an interesting juxtaposition to my personal experience because I've caught more stripers with a much larger average size in the last five years than before. And I know it's not because I've become a better fisherman.

Safety First / Re: Hydration

I learned the importance of water on the water when I was a kid unfortunately. I went out for a full day of fishing with a friend on his dad's boat. We spend the entire day, sunrise to dinnertime, bobbing around Carquinez Straight. It was late June and the weather was in the low 90's. Geniuses that we were, we had a 12 pack of soft drinks to split between the three of us.

Getting off the boat that evening, I remember having a crushing headache and my body felt all tingly and everything  that I touched felt cold. I couldn't remember using the restroom on the water so I went to hit the porta potty before we left the launch. Maybe three ounces of almost orange urine was all that I produced and I knew that something was wrong.

Luckily, I got home quickly and started sipping on ice water while sitting in a cold bath. It took the better part of the night to feel back to normal. The real fun started the following day when the constipation from the previous day's dehydration became evident. I spent the next few days(on a tent camping trip to boot) crapping rabbit pellets trying to clear the impaction. Spending half of your days on a forest service toilet makes for a terrible vacation.

Sorry about the TMI, but the moral of the story, just drink some damn water while you're out there.

Thanks for the report, John. Might just have to make the drive up the hill to give it a shot. At least reaffirm that even a blind squirrel like myself finds a nut occasionslly.

Fish Talk / Re: New fish species in Cali
« on: June 05, 2022, 08:38:43 AM »
"The judges described how California's legislature has wavered for years over whether or not to explicitly include invertebrates in the Act, presumably saving them the trouble of having to expand the definition of fish."

Translation: CA legislature could have avoided this nonsense if they had simply done their jobs.

Places to Launch and Camp / Re: Bolinas

Check out Google Earth. From that imagery, you can make out the channels as well as the mudflats that you should avoid. There are lots of pullouts along highway 1 that offer an easy launch right into the main channel. As others have said, while its doable, it will take a little planning to help you avoid a mud walk or not being able to make it back to your launch site. You'll see kayakers and SUP crabbers out there in the south end of the lagoon early in the crabbing season every year.

Kayaks / Re: Outback vs native slayer propel max

Mojo Jojo and jp52 - thank you both for the replies and info. I have just started the process of upgrading to a pedal kayak so this info is super helpful. Sounds like there are definitely pedal models out there that fit taller kayakers. Thanks for the kind offer as well, Mojo Jojo. Wish that I was close enough to take advantage.

Sorry to hijack the thread a little but are there there any taller kayakers(6'0"+) that use an Outback who might want to share their experiences with it? I'm 6'4" myself and have a hard time finding kayaks with adequate legroom. I' currently paddle an OK Big Game which fits great but I've been looking at upgrading to a pedal kayak. I haven't had a chance to try any out yet but I'm worried that the pedal position on most will be too cramped. Any recommendations as far as models to try that might accommodate a taller kayaker ?
