That's pretty amazing though. I can't imagine being that close to a whale - what an experience.  Sad that rescues like that are necessary, and even worse, how many entangled whales go unnoticed until its too late.

Giant Squid are cold-blooded (though they technically don't have blood at all) so their body temp is the same as that of the ocean water surrounding them. This makes for a cool theory and story but the culprit wasn't a squid given the story's parameters.

Sperm whale, perhaps ? The high body temp and the ability to dive to those depths would certainly account for the readings from the sensor.

That's a major bummer !

I've had the same thing happen when using and older rod myself. I went to set the hook on a fish and it too broke just below the coupling. Missed the fish too - double whammy !  :smt013

But the new one ? Wow, that's really strange. How did it break exactly ?
