General Talk / Re: Is the bull kelp rebounding?

Here's a video that shows the difference between bull kelp and giant kelp:

The video is pretty good, but it would have been a lot better with a Steely Dan soundtrack...

Since your last post about making cables and parts I actually looked into making my own set.  The parts aren’t really that expensive once u have the cable crimping tool. I’ll let u know if I give it a go.

That would be cool if it works--keep us posted!

I did find the stainless chain that Hobie uses, and it's not too expensive.

I was at West Marine today and they had a Pelican pedal drive kayak. I’d never looked closely at the Pelican pedal system (they call it hydryve), but the cables/chain look to be virtually identical to those on a Hobie mirage drive. So, I’m wondering if the Pelican cables will work on a Hobie. I can’t seem to find the hydryve cables online, but I’d bet they are cheaper than the corresponding Hobie parts. If so, it might be a good source for spare parts for a Hobie.

Welcome.

I'd never heard of that brand of kayak. From the info online, it looks like it'll be super-stable, and it also looks like it's got super-comfy seats...

In decades of kayak fishing the ocean I saw my 1st landlord yesterday at Santa Cruz right before we entered the mouth of the harbor.

Santa Cruz? Must've been a mola, as the landlord is restricted to Capitola...

I also find it more difficult to right my Hobie (a Revo 16) than to climb back on board. While the rope technique is a good one, I think it might be wise to practice tipping it right-side-up without a rope, just in case the rope is missing, inaccessible, or whatever...

Welcome, Dr. CnCC.

What field is your PhD?

I think the ones that get away keep us coming back more than the ones we catch.

Yes!

Says launches are allowed at the West end of the beach and at life guards discretion.

That's good to know. So, launch early before any lifeguards are present and hope that they don't use their discretion to prevent you from landing...

I launched from Mitchell’s Cove once. That was one of only 2 times that I have been able to con my older son into hauling my kayak to the launch site—the other time, I launched at 4 mile beach and landed at the harbor. As FT says, the stairs at Mitchell’s Cove are no joke.
