CA Regulations / Re: Wild Turkey Taste and Texture

Instead of pork tonkatsu, I've made wild turkey breast katsu and it comes out very nice.  Rave reviews from family.

I included my query for this one.  Not sure if I'm hitting the right buttons (I tell my wife that too).

I had posted annual commercial takes for the US in another thread and it was very flat for the last 20 years.  But the NOAA also allows you to query their databases and you can pull up by state / species.  So I queried California, last 15 years, all species of rockfish.  The results were eye opening.   Commercial rockfish take is climbing very rapidly.  Columns are Pounds, Tons, $.

"They should make the fish limits on PBs 6 bottom fish"

I think it should be 5 rockfish for everyone.  Unfortunately, the large rockfish limit seems to favor PB's as it becomes less viable for someone to pay hundreds of $ to go out on a PB for a much smaller number of fish.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Squid source near Scotts Valley

Hit an Asian market.  Usually will have fresh squid and always you'll find frozen.  All at a lower price.  Oddly squid you can eat is cheaper than squid as bait.

There is a Ranch 99 in Los Gatos I think.  When you are over in the SJ area, give it a visit.

Will anything be in season then?  /s

"I'm sure DFW didn't just pull the numbers out of their ass, as NOAA conducts a comprehensive, mandatory fish observer data gathering program aboard all commercial groundfish vessels."

I agree.  BUT, and this is almost a big BUTT

For the antlerless hunting season for a county in California, the decision to have the hunt or not was based on the county supervisor driving in to the office and his choice was determined on how many deer he saw. The science was ignored.

I had chatted with several DFG biologists and they were very open and helpful on why we should have a doe season.  So, bringing it back to fishing, who is deciding and what are their drivers?  I'd like access to all the data used for the decision.  It is a democracy isn't it?  I'll be frank, I have more degrees than the county supervisors.  Why can't I review the data?

Who wins from this decision?  Gas and oil sales?  Motor boat sales?  Party boats?

Oil burners can still fish.

I would like more transparency on the decision making.  Who paid for what research, who donates to which politicians, and which of those politicians have a say on these decisions.

"Trying to imagine what circumstances would lead to a kayak ending up on a beach like that without its owner."

I'd assume falling off a dock or off the back of a boat.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Re: Legal Question

Yeah, more of a theoretical than real.  But I sent in the question to the DFG too.  From the numbers perspective, I don't think there will be this sudden onslaught of freediving anglers any time soon.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Legal Question
« on: March 02, 2023, 09:17:21 AM »
In my old age, I'm less and less up for hours of hunting but I do enjoy just putting on the wetsuit and go sight seeing in Monterey.  But...  the restrictions on fishing are for boat based anglers.  So if I have a shorty rod and I am swimming around in 60 fow, I presume I can drop a line and pull in a rockfish or lingcod?  The rules are not specific.  I am not boat based.  I am not using spear fishing gear.   Curious as to people's thoughts.

Divers and shore-based anglers are exempt from season and depth restrictions affecting the RCG complex and other federally managed groundfish (sections
27.20(b)(1)(C) and 27.20(b)(1)(D)). Shore-based anglers are fishermen that fish from beaches, banks, piers, jetties, breakwaters, docks, and other manmade
structures connected to the shore. Divers are spear fishermen entering the water either from the shore or from a boat or other floating object. The possession and
transit provisions described for shore-based anglers, and divers are as follows:
• When angling from shore (includes beaches, banks, piers, jetties, breakwaters, docks, and other man−made structures connected to the shore), all
species may be taken and/or possessed year−round (See subsection 27.50(b)(1) for exceptions in the Cowcod Conservation Areas). No vessel or
watercraft (motorized or non−motorized) may be used to assist in the take, transport and/or possession of these species under this provision.
• When diving or spearfishing, as authorized in Section 28.90, all species may be taken and/or possessed year−round (See subsection 27.50(b)(2) for
exceptions in the Cowcod Conservation Areas). When boat−based groundfish fishing is closed, all types of fishing gear, except spearfishing gear, are
prohibited to be aboard the vessel or watercraft (motorized or non−motorized) when taking and/or possessing these species under this provision.

Thanks

Camping at Laguna Seca.  I plan to now at least podium in the tourney with a 12 oz. rockfish now that the heavy hitters have bowed out.   :smt044

Bringing firewood and some beer.  Last year fires were OK at LS and I didn't see any restrictions on the site so far.

It looks like a great weekend ahead!
