For Sale / SOLD - Elie 10' Sit on Top Kayak $125
« on: July 18, 2020, 10:24:33 AM »
I've got a Coast 100XE kayak that I bought before I got a Hobie and actually started fishing, now it's taking up too much garage space.

Wanted to put it up here before I listed it on craigslist.

good starter kayak, says it's 52 pounds, but I walked it from the garage to the lawn with one hand, so I have a feeling it's way lighter.  Comes with a aquabound paddle and stylish pfd if you want em.

$125 takes it.

I'm in Santa Clara

General Talk / Mirage Drive Spline Damage
« on: January 28, 2020, 10:14:55 AM »
Hey all,

Looking for a little help from the hive mind.

I've attached a picture, I've broken the little nob I circled, and for the earlier drives with a plastic spine seems like a cheap replacement just the plastic part needs replacing but with the MD180 drives I've only seen full rotating spine assemblies for the V2 md180. which I suppose would be an upgrade?

I like to replace just replace the cover with the nub if there is a replacement part for that.  Otherwise I suppose I should hit up CCK?  Or I'm upgrading to some new fins as well as the spine upgrade.

Thanks for any help guys.

Does anyone have an annual fishing permit for the East Bay Parks?  Searching on the net found nothing and every time I've remembered to call I've not gotten anyone to answer.

I would def be going to Shadow Cliffs more often if I could make it 'worth my while'

Recipes / Fish with Tomato Ragu
« on: December 30, 2019, 10:05:04 AM »
Just leaned this recipe over Xmas, and I thought I would share it with yall.

some butter and olive oil.

1 can ( whole peeled, or diced, or chopped ) Tomatoes
1 Medium Sweet Onion ..... Finely Chopped
5 large cloves Garlic ( or you know, add more ) ....... Thinly sliced
1/4 cup ( yeah it seems like a lot ) Sherry or Champagne Vinegar
2 - 3 large new potatoes ( red skin or white skin waxy potatoes ) Cooked, then Sliced thinly into 1/8" rounds

any and all fish or other meat you wish.

Pan sear your fish I had scallops and a Canary RF with a little butter and or olive oil, not too much or you won't get a nice sear.

after your fish is seared, remove to a plate and set aside for later.
Add in the Garlic and onion to the pan, stir around on medium high heat for a few minutes to soften and make fragrant.
Add the Can of tomato with all the liquid it has.  let cook in the onion and garlic mixture, taste and salt and pepper to taste.

Here's the most technical part

turn off the heat

use a slotted spoon ( or in my case a big deep frying spider? ) to remove the large chunks of  the tomato and onion/garlic ragu into a baking dish leaving the liquid in the pan.

Once all the chunks are in the baking dish, add heavy cream to the remaining tomato liquid in the pan and cook until sauce thickens up and is nice and creamy.

the original recipe says to spoon over the sauce onto the ragu, but I just pour it and use the spoon to smooth it out, add a layer of potatoes on top then  pop baking dish covered with foil into the oven topped with your seared fish, crab, muscles whatever you go to do today, and put into the oven until everything is heated up and ready to eat.      ~15 - 20 minutes.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Chater boat Reel decision
« on: December 28, 2019, 03:31:40 PM »
Hey Guys I think I'm overthinking this, but thought I would ask

I'm taking the GF on a crab combo charter boat tomorrow to catch her first non-anchovy, and she's really excited to go.

I usually have her using my Lexa 300, because it's lightweight and simpler than a lever drag.
I was going to bring the Lexa for her and my Penn Warframe for me instead of my avet just because I want the levelwind for dropping 200 foot over and over.

I've never used that much weight on the Lexa am I just overthinking it, or should I bring the Penn  for her and I just deal without levelwind with the avet?

a couple weeks ago my Girlfriend showed some interest in fishing so we got on a skiff this morning out of Capitola despite the long period swell from the south.

This being her first time fishing in the ocean the objective was find bait and spend as long as we can catching that because I knew she would get a kick out of that, the last fish she caught was before kindergarten.  after we got about 25 anchovies in the bucket the bait moved on and we made a b-line for the mile buoy, dangling a couple 4oz swimbaits with some squid skirted 6/0 hooks above those.  We drifted for a while, a really slow drift. I was trying to work the rocks, but was having a hard time finding them, but we hit a couple drifts from rock to sand and back rock to sand, and then I got hit by something.  it takes drag, head shakes on head shakes, more drag.  I was really confused to be honest, because this hali never gave up, it was running the whole fight but out came a 24.5" halibut that I was so sure wasn't 22" I hand lined it into the boat and that I measured for fun to help teach her the correct way to measure and size/bag limit I had to remeasure it 4 times, but I was stoked!

after moving spots a couple times, we came back to the mile buoy and she got a take down from what I assumed was a rock cod that didn't pan out, but she had a blast catching chovies, and wants to catch a salmon now.

not a bad day out on the water, I didn't see a lot of bent rods anywhere but it was a perfect day for the GF to experience the ocean in a small craft, one less bait trip for anchovies and my second legal halibut ever, so a good albeit tough day fishing.

Last weekend I went up to the PBOA tornament in Crescent City.  the report is a little long, and I was so concentrated on fishing I forgot to take any pictures of the fish.

Got OTW a little after 6:30am was a little sketch about going out before light, and paddled out around the jetty to around the lighthouse. Finally figured out that my radio volume was all the way down…  So on my second attempt at finding my Partner Saw, he picked up and replied immediately, nice reminder to get your radio working before!

Saw’s got a black rockfish or two, and a barely legal Cabezon so far, and we need to make 3 species to get on the board, and make any points.  We’ve found a couple of pinnacle rocks under the surface, ( me with no ff, was just hoping and praying to get a drift over it ) no hookups, and we were running out of ideas. We decide ( Saw makes a suggestion and I say let's go! ) to head in a little shallower near the lighthouse, so in less than 20 feet of water and already at almost 10am I’m making my first drift through some patchy kelp I get a slam on my slug, it’s a 12” or so black rockfish, well at least I’m not skunked, and I’ve got some fish for the fryup later.

Only productive bite out of two, so I just peddle back up to the rock I started at and floated through the weeds one more time.  And Boom! I get some drag on the ol’ Penn.  after a little bit of a run, I’m thinking small ling, but comes up a 16” cabezon, still, not helping that third species.

Screw it! Let's go back to the rock.  My partner is looking to find a different spot since the kelp is becoming a problem, but I like beating my head against walls, and so far it’s worked so I got to try again, right? At least for another couple minutes, it’s like 10:30am at this point, maybe 11 but I just knew there had to be another fish around this evil kelp that just took my partner’s Branson Slug and Jig.

So, I slap on the tried and true 4oz Shad Jig Head, and a 6.5” Senorita Big Hammer below a less handmade shrimp fly. Tipped with a little anchovy.

Another black rockfish.

Back down, with a new anchovy.  I felt a little squishy bite, and I figured it was another little black reel in a little and feel a little weight, set the hook and a good bit of drag, bent rod, drag peel, yes! Okay, this will be like every other ling you’ve caught, 2 pulls, then net him. This ling cod made his second pull, but he made it straight up. Reeling like a mad man, I see a brown and green bullet spiraling upward towards me, jump completely out of the water, pull off a few more tight circles under the water, up out of the water again no time for a net, I handline the 26” acrobat while he was coming back up to make his great escape rushing the surface for a third time, straight between my legs and on the fish grips. He absolutely demolished the Big Hammer, only an inch of it remained on the hook, that was just barely lodged in his nose, with the line all wrapped up around his jaw after the two crazy jumps.  I Yelled to Saw, to get this crazy fish on his stringer asap.  We got our third species!

After changing spots still armed with an anchovy tipped shrimp fly, and a 4oz Jig with a Senorita floating above the rocks in 12fow, I get another hit, another ling that I failed to net, and seeing a very good hookset in the mouth on the top of the nose of the shrimp fly of all things, I handline the 27.5” brown ling in before I lost it with another failed net job.

Saw grabs a 20.5” Cab for 160 points, and I find another black rockfish, but like a 15 or 16 inch one. One of my biggest rockfish to date, and for sure a personal best black.

In the end we didn’t place, but I was super lucky and thankful to have a great partner like Mike/Saw.

He didn’t just help me out the guy who was supposed to help bring in points for his/our team.  He helped out someone who’s mirage drive broke on the water, and lent him his spare so he could be out there fishing better, offered a rod to another friend/competitor and that’s the main thing I am going to take away from this tournament experience, besides the camaraderie and community of kayak anglers, taking the time to be a little bit more prepared and have backups, not just for me, but someone else could save their entire day of fishing, and turn it around from a stressful day, to a laughing, hooping and hollering type of day that we all want OTW.
