Places to Launch and Camp / Re: Santa Cruz swell exposure
« on: May 28, 2024, 02:46:00 PM »
Thinking of checking out Santa Cruz on Wednesday for the first time as everywhere else is looking pretty off limits, possibly at Mitchell's Cove. No wind but showing a 7 foot NW swell, curious how much of that swell will reach the reefs off of Mitchell's Cove/the lighthouse? Am I better off heading to Capitola?

Windy says 7' at 8 seconds, which would definitely not be fun. Since it's from the NW, you would get some protection from the full force of that, but I'm guessing it would still be pretty bumpy. There might be enough bumpiness so that the fish get lockjaw too. Also, I assume that you are aware of those evil stairs at Mitchell's Cove...

You might want to consider launching from the west side of the harbor (the "A" or "F" dock). You don't even have to go half way to the mile buoy to be in a halibut zone, and there are a few rockfish areas near there too (but, not as good for RF as Mitchell's).

For sure.  I’ve been using an 18ah DB Power brand jump start battery.   I recently bought an fpv-waterproof lithium for my ff so I no longer use it for my main kayak but da  Kraken is corded for it.  I bring it now on board with a charging cable in a waterproof pouch to charge my phone if it mega depletes from navionics and photos and yapping on the speakerphone with full brightness screen for my dying eyeballs.  I also use it to run my bubbler when I get live bait the night before than I switch to an sla when I can.  I’m not sure why it trickles enough to run all my stuff apart from its intended purpose but it has been profitable for my needs. :smt006

Interesting that it multitasks so well. I wonder if it shortens its useful life…

Welcome! If you fish in Santa Cruz this summer, I’m sure I’ll see you on the water.

Great fish!

And, thanks for the detailed report on the adventures of fisherman Aaron, fisherman Eddie, and the other fisherman Eddie.

Have you tried trailering with your AI on it? I finally got to used my yakima two weeks ago and the tongue wasn't as long

as my malone trailer.

It was either too close where it prevented me from opening my rear door or it's not balanced and teters off the rear if I

have it farther back.

I hadn't really thought about how it would balance until after I built it. I tried it out this morning, and to improve the balance, i think I'm going to ditch the Hobie bunks, and use PVC pipe instead. I'll need to make the rear part of the bunk removable, so that I can still stand it up on end, but I don't think that'll be too difficult to achieve.

Is that pilot Mr. X?

7th Avenue when waves are small. I used to launch at Mitchell's Cove a lot.  Back when the prowler 13 weighed in at 40 pounds or so... wicked switchback stairs.

bushy

That is a great place to launch, but I only ever did it when I could get my kids to carry the kayak down and up the stairs. It's also worth noting that at high tide, that beach might disappear...

It looks really good.  Is the DIY savings significant?

To be honest (and, I'll be honest about this with NCKA, but not with my wife...), I probably didn't save much. I bought the wheels, swing arms, and shocks from Yakima, I had to buy a few tools, and I made a couple of fairly costly mistakes along the way. But, I think if I was just starting now, knowing what I know, I could build one for half price or less of the real deal, which would put it at about the same price as a Trailex trailer. I might just try it to see if it really is possible...

It looks like a fork and plastic bag is all that's needed to catch an octopus...

The big blue? Stop with the spot burning!

For example, I wont bring extra marige drive because its too heavy, and even it out of work, I still can use hand-paddle to make my Kayak move. But I will bring extra AKA, that part is not reliable, if that one broken, will give me a big trouble.........

From what I've seen (and what I've read on the Hobie forum and here), a mirage drive failure is far more likely than an aka bar problem. The only cases that I can recall of aka damage were due to failed beach landing attempts, where the boat goes sideways. On open water, aka bars have been known to detach from the kayak, but it's easy to rig a safety/keeper line so that it won't move much, let alone drop off and disappear into the depths. On the other hand, mirage drives fail often and in many different ways--from broken crank arms and chains to cracked plastic drums, and everything in between.

You can sorta paddle a TI, but I believe you'll have a paddleboard "bench" and cooler on one side and maybe tramps too, which would make that "sorta" more like "nearly impossible". Since you are on a TI, why not just put a spare mirage drive in the other slot for the 2nd pedaler, and bungee it into the "up" position? The extra weight would be insignificant, and in an emergency, you could get access to the spare drive in a few seconds. That could matter if your mirage drive fails at a critical point in time.

You might also want to think about how would steer the boat if one of the spectra lines breaks, as that is not uncommon. And I assume you are carrying at least a couple of extra rudder and aka pins.

I believe there are a few items that you must have for your adventure.

1. A new kayak
2. A new spare drive
3. A adequate suit for extreme conditions
4. Adequate weather information devices
5. Reliability, and strengthening upgrades to the kayak.
6. Satellite phone
7. At least 2 high quality radios
8. Probably many more items I can’t think of

I've got a spare mirage drive that Mr. X can borrow. Sadly, no Tandem Island available, however...
