Stealth / Damage on stealth. Thoughts?
« on: July 16, 2022, 09:37:49 AM »
Short story. I’m an idiot. Had the stealth on a fold out table to work on it. Forgot how long it was closed garage door, flipping it up and throwing it to the ground. Luckily my motorcycle broke its fall  :smt009

At any rate take a look at these cracks. Any thoughts for repairs? I have access to the backside of it. They don’t seem to be cracked on the backside. I will be taking it to a lake later today to water test to make sure I don’t have any weird leaks at the seam where the top and bottom half’s join.

TLDR: bass are out deep chasing Shad. I caught a lot. All schooled chunks 1-2 lbs.

I absolutely love post spawn bass fishing. Love it. Most people hate this time of year. A lot of bass fishermen prefer earlier in the spring when they can pluck bass off beds as they try to spawn. Personally I prefer to let them do their thing.

After the spawn a lot of people think the bass disappear. They keep beating the banks for less success than what happens earlier in the year.  Well the bass (around here) have one thing on their mind, Shad. They are out deep chasing Shad and they are hungry and aggressive.

I launched late on Sunday to rain and overcast skies. It transitioned to humid warm overcast skies. I wore the rain gear, but had to ditch it after a bit because it was too warm. Set off at a fast pace looking for Shad and bass. It didn’t take to long to find them and once I did it was on! Over the course of 4 or so hours I landed more bass than I can count, a few catfish, and a handful of crappie. Mostly on small paddle tails, some on gulps, some on crank baits.

We may have another week or two left until the thermocline sets up and the fish get really deep, but they were around 20 feet chasing Shad, pushing them up against the surface. So much fun, hook one and the school will follow it up as you are landing it.

If you have a chance grab some Shad imitating lures, get away from the banks, and keep your eyes open for birds and Shad on the surface. You may just have an epic day of fishing.

AOTY / AOTY Huge steelhead alert!
« on: June 02, 2022, 12:49:46 PM »
Steelhead. Those elusive fish native to California. Difficult to target. Difficult to hook. Difficult to land. I'm not referring to smaller rainbow trout that have the chance to go to the ocean but choose to stay in freshwater, I'm referring to honest to god got big in the ocean and returned as a silver missile to spawn steelhead. Many anglers have never had the chance to target them, let alone land one.

There aren't too many entered into AOTY, but Poopsmith just entered the second largest one on record at 32.75 inches! Awesome fish.

AOTY / AOTY May is a wrap

AOTY May Wrap Up.

Everyone, five months down! We are almost to the halfway point. Lots more fishing time ahead of us and a lot more fish to catch. It’s been fun seeing all the great fish roll across the board. There has been some good fishing going on, and I hope that it continues. A lot of us are living vicariously through the catches and reports of others.

With that being said let’s look at how AOTY is going!

81 anglers signed up for AOTY so far.

9 anglers signed up for Youth AOTY.

ROCKFISH: scottymeboy was tied by tomcod with a second 20.25 verm

CABEZON: Poopsmith has crushed it with a 26.5! 3rd biggest in AOTY history. Awesome!

SALMON: KPD still has the largest at 33.75 from a paddle kayak no less. Way to get it done!

HALIBUT: Corey on top with a 32.75.

LINGCOD: Lingking707 has a 33.0 entered as current top ling.

TROUT: MarkL is still on top with a 21.0 rainbow

SMALLMOUTH/SPOTTED BASS: Gator still on top with a great 20.5 spotted bass.

LARGEMOUTH BASS: Sam_Elliott still has the big one at 23.5

STRIPED BASS: tommcdo has taken top spot with a 33.75
GREENLING: tommcdo is on top with a 16.0

SURF PERCH: Ghost still on top at 12.25”

FLATFISH: KPD still on tip at 11.25”

STEELHEAD: Holy cow we have a steelhead!!!!!! Poopsmith with a monster 32.75. The second largest one ever entered.

PANFISH: Snazzyshun still on top at 15.5. That’s a very big crappie!

CATFISH: Threemoneyj still on top at 29.5

KOKANEE: Corey is on top of the Kokanee board with a 17.25 huge kokanee

MACKINAW (Lake Trout): Sturgeon General is whooping Jewli0n with a 25.5 to his 20.25.

BROWN TROUT: The Kraken is on top with a 17.0

Missing Fish: There are only a few unicorns left. Sturgeon, White Sea Bass, and Pacific halibut. I hope that some of them hit the deck this season.

Great job to those who got out and entered some fish! I’ve seen some reports and fish pictures that haven’t showed up in AOTY. Hopefully those of you who have yet to sign up will do so! It is still wide open right now with plenty of time to get involved!

You could probably hit any number of lakes and cross off the two bass, a panfish, a catfish and a trout in one trip. Mix in a productive salt bottom fishing outing for a rockfish, lingcod, cab, greenling and possibly a flatfish, halibut or perch mixed in. Boom, 2 trips and 10 fish you are in the hunt!

The third month of AOTY has come and gone. Spring is here, the weather is warming up, and the fishing is good! I know I’m a few days late with this report so there are a few ocean fish entered that technically don’t fit into March, but math is hard.

Let’s take a look at how AOTY is going!.

AOTY / AOTY Big Bass Alert
« on: March 21, 2022, 08:18:26 PM »
Sam_Elliott just entered a 23.5 inch(188 point) piggy largemouth. It is in the top 10 largest entered, and largest entered since 2019. Great fish Sam!

PS I was there. UL rod and 5lb test. She chased that fish around for quite a long time! She is no stranger to large fish, having entered the largest striped bass of last year at 35”, also on light tackle.

AOTY competitors, now is the time for some big freshwater fish! Get out there and catch yours!

General Talk / Deal on SPJ Rod
« on: March 12, 2022, 04:45:32 PM »
EDIT: Initial impressions. Between yard work, freshwater fishing, and defending humanity from the Witch Queen I received my Goofish rod. I went with an acid wrapped (spiral wrapped) pe 2-4 rod in black. It was nicely packaged and came in a nice rod protector sleeve that I plan on reusing.

In retrospect acid wrapped is probably not for me. It makes the rod a little more difficult to store and transport. Oh well.

Initial build quality seems overall good. I didn’t see anything to gripe about. Usually I would look for guide alignment, but hey, acid wrapped.

I benchmarked the rod against my trusty trevala s tvsc63m which is similar in rating. The shimano I seems ever so slightly lighter, but it is 3 inches shorter. The balance point on the 2 are very similar. The grip length and reel placement are very similar. I prefer the rear grip on the shimano, and the front grip on the goofish.

Action wise I threw my tern 300 on both and attached it to a 10lb dumbbell. The goofish bends all the way to the front grip, the shimano had a few extra inches left before the front grip.

No comment yet on sensitivity or actual fishyness, but I’m very excited to start fishing it!

Stealth / Stealth Transducer Install.
« on: February 19, 2022, 08:51:55 AM »
Yet another transducer install and Fishfinder upgrade.

I originally installed a lowrance hook 5 on my Fisha 500. It came with a small access in the fish hatch to the main hull to install a transducer. Long story short I had nothing but problems with getting a good bottom reading.

I suspect it was the location of my transducer. When I load my kayak using the Yakima sweetroll I think it was rolling on the transducer and causing it to become unglued.

At the same time I wasn’t super happy with the lowrance. After using a 7 inch raymarine for so long on my Hobie I had been spoiled. I wanted a 7 inch on the stealth. I decided to go with a Humminbird Helix 7.

Drawing inspiration from Eddie I added a 6 inch hatch on the rear deck to do a water bath transducer install.

General Talk / Humminbird Customer Service
« on: February 19, 2022, 08:06:01 AM »
Humminbird (and I suppose Johnson Outdoors who they belong to) get a 10/10 for customer service from me.

Long story short a warranty issue was quickly fixed, I was basically only out shipping time to Alabama and back. Great communication and service from them.

I purchased a new Helix 7 from Scheels as a birthday present to myself. When it arrived I hooked it up to a battery and tested it out on my workbench and I thought I checked to make sure everything worked well. All seemed well so I began my install.

-Fully installed on 2/6 and I discover that the zoom in and out buttons on the mapping feature don’t work. So Sunday 2/6 I shoot them an email.

-Monday 2/7. A few quick emails back and forth to make sure it’s actually the unit and not operator error and they send me a return shipping label for the factory. It’s in UPS’s hand at the end of the day.

-Friday 2/11 UPS delivers to Humminbird.

-Friday 2/18 I have a working unit waiting for me on my doorstep when I get home.

I don’t have any thoughts on the product yet, but the customer service experience was great!

« on: February 02, 2022, 07:18:57 AM »
AOTY January Wrap Up.

The first month of AOTY has come and gone. I know a lot of us spent the month not fishing, maybe prepping gear, recovering from the holidays, or even focusing on crabs and shore fishing. A few people did get out and pick up some fish on their kayaks though! Lets take a look at how AOTY went for the month.

75 anglers signed up for AOTY
6 anglers signed up for Youth AOTY
14 fish entered.
3 Trout entries. Pasha has the largest at this point with a 19.5” (151.125 points)
2 Smallmouth/Spot Bass entries. Corey has the largest at 16.25” (146.25 points)
2 Largemouth Bass entries. Tommcdo has the largest at 18.0” (144 points)
3 Surf Perch Entries. Ghost has the largest at 12.25” (147 points)
1 Flatfish Entry. KPD has the largest at 11.25” (101.25 points)
3 Panfish Entries. Snazzyshun with the largest at 15.5” (186 points) That’s a big panfish and it might go the distance.

Great job to those who got out and entered some fish in January!

Its wide open right now with plenty of time to get involved!
