Thanks for the report.  Wish i had Wednesdays off.  Im sure you'll land a big one next time.  I think the trick is having Kenny the halibut whisperer close by =).

Places to Launch and Camp / San Quentin beach parking...
« on: June 05, 2021, 02:58:11 PM »
Hi all.  Rumor has it that there isn’t parking for > 2 hours near the beach unless you park near someone’s home.  Anyone willing to spill the beans as to where the secret parking spots are?

Cheers - Nick

Thanks fellas.  So just our of curiosity, do you troll live baits as well and if so do you use a flasher?  Does anyone troll swimbaits? If so what size jig head do you use?

General Fishing Tips / Trolling for butts- noob questions.
« on: May 26, 2021, 06:52:50 PM »
So i was out on T-bay the other day trolling for butts.  Like everyone else; i didn't catch anything but it was my first time trolling.   So I have a few questions.

1. When trolling - how much weight do you use? I was using 6, 8 and 16 oz balls.
2. When trolling at what angle should my line be ?  should it be 45 degrees approx?
3. How much line do i let out?  I would let my ball sink to the bottom and once i felt bottom i would start peddling.  Then, when i got going, i would pull on my rod to see if i could find bottom.   I have a line counter so i figured that if my depth meter showed 40 feet , then i would let out 60 feet of line is this the right ratio of line to let out per depth?
4. When i'm trolling should i feel the weight / ball hitting the ground occasionally?
5. How fast are you trolling for halibuts?

Thanks all and happy future memorials day.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Looking for a fishing guide

Thank you for the recommendations!  I'll reach out to Kyle to start off with.  I'm sure i'll head up north sometimes so i'll look you up Eric. I love this sport/hobby/addicting way of life and it's always a pleasure to learn something new from those with experience.

Cheers- Nick.

General Fishing Tips / Looking for a fishing guide
« on: April 27, 2021, 07:55:54 PM »
Hi all,

I’m relatively new to kayak fishing.  I’ve been out in the ocean but generally fish lakes.  I’m looking for a guide that can show me some good areas along the sonoma coast.  I’m specifically interested in halibut/lingcod but also learning about where to launch fish and how to understand wind/ tide conditions in the area.  Any recommendations?

Cheers - Nick

Pmmpete,

How did you DYI the counter balance?  I’m interested in the Trax 300.  Also do you have a rod of preference with the reel?

Hi all.  I haven't fished halibut on a kayak yet and i was wondering... where do you keep the halibut after you catch them?

I was thinking about getting the hobie fish bag so that i can bleed/keep cold for freshness.  Has anyone tried the hobie fish bags?  if so what size do you use? I have a hobie outback.

My worry with stringing them and keeping them in the water is that bleeding them could attract sharks / other unwanted marine life attention.

Thanks for your 2 cents- Nick

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Picking a Fishfinder for Ocean Salmon
« on: January 30, 2021, 08:07:41 AM »
Great threat.  I am also in the market for a fish finder.  Im getting in to kayak fishing and haven't been out in the ocean yet but i plan to.   So far i've been hitting up rivers and lakes.   A few of my questions are.

1. How important is it to have a fish finder with coastal maps pre-loaded on the fish finder?
2. How important do you think side scan is?
3. With transducers that require a replacement plate that sticks out about 2 inches... how well does the plate protect the transducer? how much of a nuisance is it when transporting / moving your kayak?

Thanks- Nick.

So weather was super nice but fish didn't bite.  Tried pink worm, bead, wicked lures and egg pattern and sculpin.   Next time ill try roe.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Beginner Steelhead Tips?
« on: January 17, 2021, 03:11:00 PM »
I'm hitting the Russian river tomorrow (see my post on hookups section).  I'm not 'steel head fisher' by any means as i usually fly fish on the putah but you'll need at least a 7 weight fly rod.  I've been reading that using the 'duck and chuck' method (need a sinking or shooting fly line) along with a lead weight is what tends to work.  I'm planning on using an egg pattern followed by a comet pattern tied to the egg.

One day i plant to hit the lower sac to do some drift fishing for steelhead as I hear that it is much more productive than the Russian.

I just got my keys from the county for river access at Steelhead beach off the Russian river.  I'm planning to try my hand at steelhead fishing for MLK if anyone wants to join me tomorrow.  Because of low flows most of Sonoma County rivers are closed except for the sections i plan to fish.

I'm going to try my hand at fly fishing using the duck and chuck method with egg/sculpin patterns but i'm also bringing my spin and bait casting reels as well to try good ol fashioned drift fishing.

Cheers -Nick

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Knife suggestions?
« on: January 17, 2021, 09:06:28 AM »
Thanks for the fantastic response!  For safety purposes, I'm definitely going with a double edged non folding knife with a blunt tip.   I recently purchased a filet knife and dropped it nearly puncturing my foot yesterday...

I've never used a down rigger so it's nice to know that there's an 'instant release' mechanism that can let out line as to avoid a roll over.

Many thanks -Nick.
