Safety First / Re: Winter into summer...
« on: August 08, 2022, 08:35:35 PM »
Thanks for your thoughts and dialogue Eddie: Social norms are definitely hard to navigate now days.    As a family doctor and having to deal with everything COVID for years now;  Kayak fishing has pretty much been a safe haven for me.   A day out in the Ocean is a much needed break after 12 hour work days.  I especially really enjoy and appreciate our community even if views / opinions are different than mine.

COVID 19 has killed over 1 million people in the US alone.  Many , many more have been hospitalized.  Most people that get COVID either have no symptoms or develop mild symptoms .  I've seen lots of patients with "long -covid".  It happens to about 1/20 people that get the omicron variant of COVID and unfortunately we don't have good treatment options or a "cure" for long-covid.  You wont see me out in the ocean wearing a mask but i highly recommend wearing one indoors when you'll be in close contact with others.  The science is clear that if you use the right mask the right way that it can protect you and others.   Cloth masks/ gators don't work and diaper chin ( see south park ) doesn't work either.

I also want to encourage my kayak fishing brothers/sisters get the COVID 19 vaccine.  Its not going to make you bulletproof but it will reduce your chance of going to the hospital.   Take my word for it:  Staying healthy and catching  fish instead of COVID is a much better experience.

Hector and I had a blast at Shelter Cove with Eric.   The Bay Area and fort Ross , TC , OC are my stomping grounds so it was a fun opportunity to do something different and hit Shelter Cove.

Way to go!  Code 3 = Halibut whisperer.

Welcome to the community Troy.  I also live in Petaluma and go out at least twice per month.  I typically hit Fort Ross / Tiber cove late April for rock fish if you want to go out some time.  Tomales starts to heat up in May and Usually we hit Bodega in November for the dungees.   Let me know if you want to hit the water some time.

I was the same way staring off in fresh water.  I hired Kyle and he was great.  I now fish ocean in kayak 95% of the time now.  I encourage you to try this spring rather than winter because it’s supposed to be less snarky although I’ve honestly never seen a gw shark and have been out dozens of times

General Fishing Tips / Re: Tingle toes
« on: September 05, 2021, 09:26:02 PM »
So i had the same problem and solved it by removing the straps on the pedals and using cushy shoes with a wide toe box ( i use crocks ).  For those interested detailed info below:

It is likely that the nerves of your toes are getting compressed by your metatarsal heads ( the bones in your ball of your feet).  When you have a narrow toe box and the restrictive strap it crunches the metatarsal heads together that causes them to shift so that likely, your 2nd metatarsal head that connects to your 2nd toe is getting more pressure as you pedal.   This is why its more than likely that your interdigital nerves along the 2nd toe gets affected more.

Usually, when the numbness is because of the pyriformis or a herniated disc/ sciatica, you'll see symptoms on one foot and not both.

Great story.  Congrats man

Wind and swells don’t look too bad tomorrow.  Anyone game?  I’m thinking halibut / rockfish and possibly salmon if I don’t have to pedal out 4-5 miles to start the trolling process.  Options include Tomales, OC , TC , OP , ARW or HMB.  Any one interested?

Hit Tomales yesterday.  Plenty of anchovies but no bites... not even a shaker.  Im down to fishing bodega bay in the near future if anyone is game to try for some salmon.

I arrived home after fishing in the ocean for rock fish and my wife of 17 years asked; “ did you bring home any small mouth bass?”…
