I've used mine for all the above. They're great.

Congratulations! I remember how stoked I was when I got my first fish on my yak. Good times! Hope to see you on the water one of these days.

You guys should give imgur.com a try. It's what all the kids are using these days and is pretty easy to use

I had this same exact question couple years ago.  I decided on google.com.
google.com is an overrated boat. The Bing is clearly better.

General Talk / First charter tomorrow morning. Tips/advise welcome.
« on: June 27, 2017, 02:10:25 PM »
Hi all,

I'm going out tomorrow morning on the Salty Lady out of SF for Salmon with a buddy who set the trip up. This will be my first time fishing off of a boat that isn't my kayak, so any advice would be welcome. I've fished for salmon before but I have no clue about boat etiquette, or how self sufficient I'm expected to be. Like how much of my own gear should I bring?

Any help in not making an too much of an ass of myself would be welcome.

Thanks!
-Bryan

General Fishing Tips / Re: Any Vintage Penn reel users here?

I have a longbeach 60 and 65 that my dad gave me. I caught my first ling/saltwater fish on the 65! I would love to get my hands on a squidder or jigmaster one of these days. It's hard not to like the simplicity of an old Penn.

no drives, no seats, seems suspicious
Good catch, I thought I read "drive" somewhere but he would show it if he had it I suspect.  Maybe I should take it down so no one gets duped...
The fact that they call the mirage drives 'foot paddles' is very suspicious to me. It's almost like they know nothing about it other than what it says on the side and what you can easily see after a single Google search

Fishing Pics / Re: Other flatfish
« on: June 15, 2017, 06:29:02 PM »
The new regs on petrale sole have opened up an entirely new fishery. Not only did we tie into them on the first trip out, but it's opened up a discussion on how we might catch a bag of other less-sought flatties like diamond turbot or starry flounder. I've been fishing all my life and have never caught a flounder and have only seen two caught in Humboldt County. I'll add some sanddab photos when I get a chance. I love sanddabs, hence my login name. The petrales we caught a couple weeks ago ran up to 2.5 pounds and provided some exceptional table fare. Butter sole and CA halibut make fun fish to add to your list, but sanddabs and petrale are up there with Pacific halibut in quality. Anyone out there with other flattie experience?

I've been wanting to Target sand dabs for a while. All I've heard it's they like it deep and sandy. Any other tips? I was considering trying the Monterey area because it gets fairly deep close to shore but if there are any good spots closer to the bay is appreciate the tip

Try mixing in some old bay with the batter next time and you'll have my current favorite preparation.

General Talk / Re: Any cord cutters here?
« on: March 21, 2017, 03:00:45 PM »
I'm what they call a 'never cord'. Since moving out of my dad's house I've never had a land line or cable TV. I have a cable internet connection, cell phone, a subscription to Netflix, Amazon Prime, and occasionally other providers as well.

If Netflix or Amazon don't have something I'll find it on wheretowatch.com and decide if I want to watch it enough to pay for whatever service it's on. I've never used sling.tv but it seems like it's worth trying out.

My two main notes are: your internet service price may increase due to using more data for streaming. It might be worth shopping around for a new provider.

Second, you will almost certainly have less options for what to watch, possibly including some of your favorite shows or channels, or have to do with watching them well after they air. You may also find that it's worth not having to deal with Comcast.

General Talk / Re: Marine Radio suggestions
« on: March 14, 2017, 10:17:14 AM »
I have two Standard Horizons HX300s and I would recommend them to anyone in the market. I've already even used the waterproof and floating features! One nice thing is that you can set them up to monitor multiple channels while still transmitting on one of your choice so that for example you can monitor you and your friends (69 probably) Coast Guard (16) and Intership Navigation Safety(13) so you'll known when you're about to get run over by a oil tanker.

The radio is important enough that it's worth spending a bit extra money to get a good one with nice features that isn't going to crap out when you need it. Having a spare both for redundancy and loaning to friends is also quite handy. If money is tight I would buy a nicer radio for myself and maybe a less expensive one to share/be a backup.

If you get a non-floating radio, you MUST tether it.
