I'm starting to think about upgrading downriggers for those days when the fish are deep.
Does anyone have experience mounting the Cannon 1901020 Easi-Troll to a Hobie? Not sure where to start.

Thanks,
Andrew

Or...can the Scotty Laketroller handle more than 4lbs? 6lbs might be just what we need to target fish in 100 FOW.

I have been using a scotty 1050. I use a 6# ball in the salt. It works great for places like bolinas, rockaway, hmb.  In the lakes I use an 8# ball. At 80-90 ft. The angle gets pretty  steep . I doubt that it is actually any deeper than 65-70ft.

Pmmpete did a write up on a similar cannon

https://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=12575.msg138905

I’ve used a 6lb ball with the Scotty lake troller but don’t really suggest it. It’s hard to crank up a 6lb ball with that downrigger.

+2

It's not difficult to manage a 6# ball with this DR. But pmmpete insists that the Canon DRs are much easier to crank, and although I have no experience with Canon, I'm sure he's correct...

I just found this Cannon pedestal mount. Anyone know if this would fit in the Hobie side pockets or cupholders? Or if there is a similar product that would?

https://www.amazon.com/Cannon-4-Inch-Aluminum-Fixed-Pedestal/dp/B001M5TFEE/ref=sr_1_11?crid=3RP81DRU3CGU8&dchild=1&keywords=cannon%2Bdownrigger&qid=1625512629&sprefix=canon%2Bdownrigger%2Caps%2C220&sr=8-11&th=1&psc=1

I'd wager that's not going to be a direct fit. In any case, you would easily DIY something out of 1/2" starboard plastic. Tap Plastic often has starboard in their scrap bins, so it wouldn't cost more than a couple of dollars and some time...

I installed a similar Canon downrigger on the aka of my old AI. I bought a rail mount from Folbe, then attached a piece of starboard marine plastic then bolted the base that comes with the downrigger to that. All of this is kind of big and clunky, but it worked fine. I also cut down the boom to reduce the leverage on the mount.

I would be worried that that pedestal mount will exert more force than almost anything on an AI is designed for— long lever arm on a small base.

Wanted to buy: Stealth ProFisha 575 or 525

Malibu_Two, that pedestal downrigger mount is way too big to be used on a kayak.  But this Cannon swivel downrigger mount is easy to mount on a kayak, if you want to be able to swivel your downrigger: https://cannondownriggers.johnsonoutdoors.com/accessories/mounting-systems/low-profile-swivel-base-composite.

Thanks. But where would you mount this? It appears to require a fairly large area of flat surface.

A friend who has a Hobie Outback has mounted the swivel base on a piece of aluminum which bridges between the H-Bar and gear track pair next to one of his knees.  You can see it next to his right knee in the picture shown below, although he doesn't have the downrigger in the mount in the picture.

It's easy to make a very solid DIY base on the H Bar/gear track pairs on an Outback using Yakattack Mighty Bolts or something similar.  https://www.yakattack.us/products/mightybolts-and-hardware/.  Or you can make your own bolts which fit in a gear track, as I described in a post at https://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=13167.msg144750#msg144750.

I've sort of switched gears here and am thinking of just installing an H-rail next to the rear seat of the TI (I started a new thread on this), to which I would attach a downrigger. Do you think an H-bar would fit on the TI? See pic.

Not sure if the TI layout, but if there is a cup holder, that’s where I’d install it. Of course, pmmpete has posted some great info on that—that guy is a frickin’ genius! I could post some pictures of the setup on my AI, if that might be useful.
