I caught the pictured fish in 150+ fow out of Santa Cruz today. They all looked like sand dabs to me. Sea Forager says that 16" is as big as sand dabs get:

https://www.seaforager.com/about-your-seafood-seaforager/sand-dab

So, was the big one a lunker sand dab or something else?

Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away...

Thinking its a sole of some type

Tails differ
Lateral line on top has a bend, bottom fish are straight
Eyes on opposite sides as well :smt044

I used to read HIGHLIGHTS Magazine  :smt005

My wife's favorite is a smaller flattie, so I'm going to have to fish for them more often.

Btw, those two smaller ones in the picture were both caught at the same time on a hootchie that was being trolled 80 feet down in 150+ fow. I should have hung around there for a while as I'm sure I coulda caught a bucketful of those crazy aggressive little buggers.

Looks like a Petrale sole.  One of my favorite eating fish.

Definitely not a sand dab, dabs are left eyed.

+1 on the Petrale Sole ID.  The bulgy eyes; it's a right-eyed flat fish; the slight bend in lateral line and the blotchy fins support that for me.

That was almost 6 miles straight out of the harbor. I might give it another try tomorrow, if the wind cooperates...
