Hobie Kayaks / Hobie PA loader
« on: January 01, 2013, 10:15:24 AM »
I saw this video on a loader and thought I'd pass along to my fellow PA owners.  Might work for the larger Hobie's like the AI's too.

5 lb propane bottle like this;

Or like this;

A 5lb bottle is the same as 1 gallon.

Here's what I'm building;

It's not REALLY a flame thrower, it's a weed burner, or "Vapor torch kit".  It's used to kill weeds by heating the water in the foliage cells and causing them to rupture, thus killing the weed.  Much safer for the environment, and our fishies, than chemicals.

If anyone has a back pack frame like that too, I'd be interested...
I have all the rest of the stuff.

Hobie Kayaks / Hobie Mirage i12 inflatable wanted
« on: December 22, 2012, 12:19:46 PM »
I've been searching for another kayak, this time one my wife can use and is portable enough to take with my truck camper without needing to tow.

I'm curious if anyone here has or has experience with the inflatable Hobie Mirage drive kayaks.  I've seen them from time to time, but unable to quiz their owners.

And if anyone has one for sale or knows of someone, that would be great!!

General Talk / Retired!
« on: December 15, 2012, 09:01:31 PM »
After 33 years, 3 months and 3 days, on Wednesday, 12/12/12, I went to work for the last time.

After I recover from hernia surgery I had on Friday, I hope to be OTW quite regularly.

General Talk / Hernia surgery
« on: December 15, 2012, 07:37:18 PM »
I had open inguinal hernia surgery on my left side yesterday.  I'm wondering if others here have had that and what their symptoms after were and recovery.

For me, a little more than 24 hours now, I'm comfortable, but achy while sitting in a recliner or in bed, but I get a sharp stabbing pain, like a needle is being jabbed into me right where my left leg ligament joins my pelvic bone just under the scrote.  I get that pain when I stand up and put weight on my left foot, as in walking to the bath room.  I also have a burning/needle pain at that spot and at the incision when urinating.  I can only relax my bladder and let 'er dribble. If I try to force a stream, it burns and stings worse.
I'm taking Percocet (Oxycodone/Acetaminophien 5/325) 2 tablets (10mg/650mg) every 4 hours.  Oxycodone is generic for  Oxycontin.  10mg 6 times a day is the max dose allowed.  Oxycodone is an opiate.  However, it's having almost zero effect on me.  I got up this morning at 7am and haven't even felt the need for a nap.  I've been catching up on my reading, researching a new cell phone provider, talking on the phone to my dad and other academic tasks.  My wife says I am able to carry on easy and intelligent conversation, and that the 'euphoric' mood an opiate should put me in, isn't. In fact, I'm a bit hyper if anything she says.  I wonder if the pain would be that much more severe if I wasn't to take it at all.  I can't 'test' that because everything I've read says that it's hard to bring pain back into control compared to maintaining a steady dose of medication for control.

Anyways,,,
Anyone else had the surgery and can let me know what their symptoms and recovery was like as well as any reactions to pain medications?

Also, is anyone aware of the differences between Percocet, generically known as oxycodone, and Vicodin, generically known as hydrocodone?  My adverse reaction with Vicodin in the past has been disturbing nightmares.  With Oxcodone I've been itchy and dry-mouth.

Thanks!!

Kayaks / Hobie PA; welcome or not?
« on: September 09, 2012, 11:03:07 AM »
Been getting feedback on the Hobie PA as to whether or not it's considered a kayak by some folks here on NCKA.  So, my question is; Is the Hobie PA recognized as a kayak when it comes to this site and to the events/tournaments for kayaks?

I have a Hobie PA and it's my only fishing platform right now.  I don't want to have any hard feelings from others here on the site if this type of platform isn't considered a kayak or eligible for the participation in the activities posted on here.

I wouldn't have any hard feelings over it if I was told it isn't, but I also don't want to impose or come to the wrong conclusion that the PA is welcome when it is not technically considered a kayak.

So, what makes a kayak a kayak?  If there are those (most, even all) who don't consider the PA a kayak, then what would be the reason?  In comparing the PA to the other Hobie products, it seems it's only size, but then there are other Hobie's that are even longer than a PA.  So what exactly would disqualify a PA from the kayak classification?

For Sale / WANTED; Hobie Mirage Sport
« on: September 02, 2012, 04:49:45 PM »
I let the DW take my Hobie PA for a spin and now she wants a mirage drive kayak.  After talking to Bunny a couple weeks ago, I think this is a smart place to at least start.

If anyone has a Hobie Sport,  I'm interested...

I'll be camping on UV from Friday evening to Monday afternoon over at the Robbs Peak Power House area.  (SMUD employee campground)  If anyone wants to fish and hang out, let me know.

I'm going to TRY and fish for koke and mack but also willing to soak a worm for a planter trout.  There's black bass there too.  I haven't fished for them but every time I'm out there it seems there's a couple guys bassin'.

General Talk / Folsom rates?
« on: May 02, 2012, 03:05:34 PM »
I've gone twice now to Peninsula Campground and the gate is a 'self-serve' for paying.  The price is listed for a boat at $8 but I wonder if anyone can tell me if a kayak also pays the $8?  With a single car day use fee of $10, that's 18 bucks for a morning or afternoon of fishing and I'm going to have to slow down the frequency of my trips if kayaks are paying the same price those PB's are paying.  Thanks for the info, everyone on here rocks and I greatly appreciate all the information I've learned on here.

I haven't been in years, but there used to be a boat launch and camp ground at Rattlesnake Bar on the EAST side of Folsom Lake off Hwy 49 near Pilot Hill CA.  Not to be confused with Rattlesnake Bar off Auburn/Folsom Road.  It may have been called Peninsula Campground as well...

I'd like to head over there Monday morning but I'm not sure even if it's open this early in the season or not.  Anyone know?  As a kid back in the 70's, I'd ride my dirt bike out there and fish the coves and swing the rope swings in the coves.  I remember LOTS of fish; sunfish, bass and trout.

If anyone can update me on that location or wants to meet up, that would be great!  I hope to be on the water by 7am.  I have a marine radio on 69 anytime I'm on the water as well.

73
Another last minute trip;
Heading to Ice House Reservoir in the morning, leave my house by 5:30am and I should be at the boat ramp by 7am, maybe even on the water by 7.
I'll be on 69.  The name is Ski Pro or Ski Pro 3 if you show up and want to hail me.  I plan to troll the area between the ramp and the dam first, then head back to where South Fork Silver Creek enters the lake and troll back there.

Maybe I'll see someone OTW tomorrow!

Oh, I went to Union Valley yesterday and today for work.  There was one shore fisherman at Union Valley at the boat ramp and he had not gotten any bites.  (I got there about noon and he'd been there since 7am.)  He told me he hasn't seen any fish rising either.  No other people/boats at UV yesterday.  I went to the Jones Fork arm of UV today and watched the water for at least an hour, didn't see any fish rising there either.  (Tossed in a line with power bait soaked for an hour unmolested.  My lunch hour.)   I headed to the Ice House boat ramp and there were 4 or 5 RV campers there and that many empty boat trailers as well.  Didn't wet a line, I had to continue working, but the water sure looked good, so it's Ice House for tomorrow morning.

74
Last minute, but...
I have Monday off and I'm heading to Pardee in the morning.  Leaving my house about 5:30am, I should be at the dock around 6:30am.

I'll be on 69 if anyone happens to make it out there.

This will be my first kayak trip to Pardee.  I've fished it by boat and from shore 100's of times though.  I have a whole bunch of new tackle I want to try out and tomorrow looks to be a nice day for it.

Cheers!!
