General Talk / Rancho Seco camping open for winter
« on: September 26, 2015, 07:38:04 PM »
One thing I hated since the contractors took over camping up in the mountains is that they close the campgrounds for the winter regardless of weather.  Most Crystal Basin camping will be closed by October 11th and many are closed already.  Wrench Creek, for example is already closed and has been for weeks.

But today I got an e-mail stating that Ranch Seco is open all winter for camping and has winter rates.  It's not a mountain lake, but it is as close to me as most mountain lakes are, so it will do for my camping/kayaking fix when the off season rolls around.

I just thought I'd pass that along.

Bored and searching around on Amazon for everything 'Pumpkin Spice', I found a lot of good stuff.  Then I stumbled on Lays potato chips and found some interesting flavors;
Cream Cheese and Salmon
Rock Hot Chili Squid
Japanese Seaweed
Nori Seaweed
Spicy Seafood; Shrimp, Crab, Squid with Thai Seafood Sauce
Baked Scallop with Butter and Garlic
Prawn Cocktail

I'm gonna have to try 'em all!

General Talk / Thinkin' of goin' solar..
« on: June 04, 2015, 12:41:49 AM »
Any one here have any advice on home solar systems?  I've got a few quotes and some ideas.  Right now, a 6kWh system, turn-key, is between $14K and $16K out of pocket after all the discounts, credits, etc.  That works out to around $2.60 to $2.75 per watt.

Is that a good price?  As recent as 2013, the average price was over $4 a watt, so they have come down.  A lot!  But I hear that there is going to be more aggressive cuts in costs and not sure if now is the time to pull the trigger.  The Federal tax credit, 30% unlimited/no cap, will end on December 31st of 2016.  I imagine that either the credit will be extended, revised or there will be a BIG rush towards the last quarter of 2016 by both the system sellers and buyers if a price war takes off.

Also, looking at mico-inverters that are built into each panel, so essentially, a  panel is complete with a 120v AC output that can go directly to the interface box to your panel.  No central inverter box hanging on the house.  (They are pretty big)  Anyone have any input on that?

Recipes / Smoked Alaskan Wild Sockeye Salmon
« on: April 22, 2015, 12:52:35 PM »
I cruise through Safeway Meat and Fish department on occasion and hit it big this morning at 7am.  The butcher was putting out whole fillets of Alaskan wild sockeye salmon, that were averaging 2 pounds each.  The price was $11.99 a pound except he had it marked down to $4.99 as it hit it's expiration date.  I picked up 10 pounds and brought it home to smoke.   I made up my brine of Morton Quick Cure, brown sugar, lemon thyme and real maple syrup to chill.  I rinsed the fish fillets and placed them in the brine for a 14 hour soak.  When they come out tonight, I'll pat 'em dry and place on a rack to form the pellicle over night.  Tomorrow morning, they go in the smoker at 200 degrees with Alder wood until the fish hits 140 degrees, then cut back the temp to 180 and pull when they look 'right'.

They will then be skinned and portioned, vacuum sealed and put in the freezer for special treats this year.

I'll take some photos when they go in and come out of the smoker.

General Talk / My 2011 Subaru Forester gets a new motor next week
« on: April 16, 2015, 09:47:38 PM »
I have a 2011 Subaru Forester.  When I bought it, I got the extended 7 year/70,000 mile warranty.  I do all my own oil changes and currently have just under 50,000 miles on it.  Last two changes I notice that it's using a lot of oil.  Last change a month ago saw 3 quarts used in 5,000 miles.

So, I called the dealer repair shop.  They did an oil consumption test where they change the oil, record the mileage and have me come back in 1200 miles to see how much oil it used.  The tech who wrote up the work order told me that if it used more than 10.7 ounces of oil in 1200 miles, then they would replace the short block.  I went back to have them check the oil consumption on Tuesday. Well, it used 30 ounces in 1500 miles. (I drove it a bit past 1200 miles and the dealer shop said they prefer it that way.)  Almost a whole quart of oil in 1500 miles equates to what I was seeing of 3 quarts in 5,000 miles.

The shop told me they used to just do a ring job, but that those were not as effective as putting in a brand new short block.  They ordered the parts on Tuesday and I got a call today, Thursday, that the parts are in.   My appointment is for next Tuesday morning and they'll have it back to me the next day, Wednesday, by closing time.  They also give me a free loaner as long as I have proof of insurance on my current car.

I've always had good experiences with my local Subaru dealer and am on my third one presently.  Even so, I'm surprised that there was no ambiguity about how much oil a car is supposed to use, what is normal, etc and that they immediately jump right in and fix the problem.

For Sale / Hobie sail kit $200 SOLD
« on: April 05, 2015, 10:25:31 PM »
I have a Hobie sail kit I bought from another NCKA'er some time ago and finally gave it a try a couple weeks ago.  I've decided sailing is NOT for me and so I'm posting it up for sale.

It's the sail, 2 piece mast, storage bag and a camo rope.  It's in good shape with very minor marks on the pole and the sail looks new to me. (Clear part is clear, yellow part is clean)

Did I say it's a yellow/clear sail?

First dibs goes to Kirk/ LilRiverMan since he put 2nd dibs on the last one posted up here on Classifieds.  I PM'd him, but he's not replied yet.

If Kurt doesn't want it, then it's first come, first served.

I won't ship, but I will travel to meet someone up to 50 miles.  I live in Placerville but I will be driving to Napa next Sunday, a week from today, and will be there until Tuesday morning some time.  I could also leave it at my son's house in Napa for anyone who buys it and can't make it those dates to pick up in Napa.

I can take pics and post them up, if needed, tomorrow.  I'm off to bed now.

Thanks for your consideration.

General Talk / I must be stupid or something...
« on: March 09, 2015, 08:41:52 PM »
I can not get the search feature to work as I would think it would.

I'm trying to find posts I've made in various topics and can't.

For example;
I know I've posted in the GS9 thread and I've tried searching for all posts made by me in that thread.  I get a bunch of hits, and maybe even some of them ARE in the GS9 thread, but it's not what I was hoping to get.  I just want those posts I've made in a specific thread.

Perhaps there is a tutorial someplace I can use?

Planning to enjoy the mid 70's weather with a bit of fishing on Lake Natoma tomorrow, Sunday morning.  I'll be launching at Willow Creek about noon and also bringing the wife for her maiden voyage on her new (to her) Predator 13.

Gotta leave by 5pm as I will have a large chunk of pig in the smoker ready to come out by 7pm.

With the weekend weather predicted to be in the 70's, I'm thinking of heading to Rancho Seco for some camping and kayaking.

Not sure yet what days, I'm flexible Friday through Monday if anyone else is thinking of going.

General Talk / Snake identification
« on: March 01, 2015, 05:51:16 PM »
After washing the car this afternoon, I found this guy in the driveway.  I thought at first it was a worm that came out of a crack in the pavement from the water, but upon closer inspection, I see it is a snake of some sort!  Very small, he was pretty lethargic when first handled.  After sitting in a mason jar on the kitchen counter, he became much more active.

Anyone have any thoughts on what kind of snake it is?
For reference, I live about 7 miles South of Placerville at the 2,000' elevation.

For Sale / Universal Roof J Rack Kayaki Car Top Carrier
« on: February 27, 2015, 07:10:59 PM »
I bought these recently, mounted them on my trailer, but decided to go in another direction and never used them.

I modified a bit by replacing the original tension strap with a permanently installed ratcheting strap.  I'm going to post this on craigslist but figured I'd check to see if there was any interest here first.  The straps are not trimmed so that their new owner can cut them to any size that works for their application.

I'm asking $40 for the pair.  There are two others on craigslist right now, same as mine but without the ratcheting straps, for $70 and $65 respectively.

While installing one of the straps, I tore the padding on one arm.  It's cosmetic only, but here's a photo in the spirit of full disclosure;

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Kayak trailer evolution
« on: February 26, 2015, 11:59:26 AM »
When I first bought my Hobie PA14, I knew a trailer would be the best way for me to haul, launch and store it, especially when going solo.  It was easy to convert; just swapped out the carpet covered wood bunks with 4" sewer PVC pipe.

But since then, I've garnered more equipment and got my wife a kayak as well.  So what to do in order to haul, launch and store 2 kayaks and the gear?  I came up with an idea.  I got one of those bolt-together lumber racks for a pick up truck off Amazon for about $50 and put on a Yakama RocketBox and another set of PVC pipe bunks!

First evolution of the trailer with just the PA;

Now today with the lumber rack, some parts inverted to flair out instead of in as it would be for a truck, the Yakama box and the 2nd set of bunks with wife's kayak on board;

I've several detailed photos, so if this inspires someone else to outfit using a trailer and would like further detail photos, let me know and I'll post them up.

General Talk / Happy Birthday Fishgirl!
« on: February 23, 2015, 10:27:15 AM »
For my wife's birthday, I got her a kayak!

Do you think she'll like it?  She went to go work out, so she hasn't seen it just yet.

It's a Predator 13 I picked up from a great guy, Bryant/Buzzbait54
