« on: February 16, 2017, 12:01:06 PM »

Take caution folks whoever is deciding to take their kayaks and boats out along the delta. There is a ton of debris! Looks mostly like Tule. When we were in San Pablo Bay Coastguard said there was a 40 foot tree floating around, so be cautious  :smt006

Just shooting this out there to see what bites I get. I have a barely used inflatable boat, in bag with mount and a minkota trolling motor. I also have an old, as is Roto Tiller that I don't know if works. I am interested in a sit on top kayak. Trying to think about what else  I can throw in...empty plastic 15 gallon jugs, old gas cans...

I'm fishing on my buddie's boat this Sunday and I lost my sturgeon card while clamming at Crab Fest (can't get a duplicate until I take time off work and go to a DFG office  :smt012), so I will be looking for any fish other then Sturgeon to fish for. My buddies will be sturgeon fishing so I will try and assist them with rigging and find places to anchor. Can I catch halibut this time of year? And if so, methods? Or can I catch bait fish like smelt in that area? What else can I catch and what bait to use? I'll even be happy with a bat ray I suppose. I hear they are good eating. :smt001

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Contra Loma Lake 2/4
« on: February 06, 2017, 03:49:12 PM »
I did some fishing at Contra Loma Lake this past weekend with my papa. They planted over 2k lbs of Trout since 1-27-17 and one of the plantings was with Lassen Trout. Seen a couple guys with some meaty catfish. I was using crawlers and power bait, no bites :( It was nice to take my papa fishing though, he had fun. There were some pelicans out there, never seen them there before. I grew up fishing this lake, and I remember pulling lots of meaty catfish from my little inflatable boat. I will try again another day.

General Talk / Anyone ever crab at Bolinas Lagoon?
« on: November 01, 2016, 07:27:09 PM »
My girlfriend wants to go to Bolinas Lagoon, she says her and her X used to catch crab out there on his port a boat. If weather for the opener is bad I may try this place instead. Has anyone ever crabbed here before?

Safety First / Almost sliced my fingers off when rockfishing
« on: October 06, 2016, 08:52:33 PM »
Just wanted to share my little story during the Ocean Cove event, it was terrible judgment on my part that could have left me with only the hang loose fingers on my right hand. I got a snag using braid and tied the line up with my hands and tried to let the force of the swell that brought me up, pull out the snag. I knew this was not a safe thing to do but for some reason I felt like that snag could come off with just a little force. Next thing I knew the line was so tightly wrapped around my middle and ring finger that I could just feel it slowly slicing through! As soon as the swell brought me back down I cut the line with my knife that was fastened to my life jacket, using the left hand and broke my poor tiny fingers free from the impending disaster!

Hopefully someone reading this will learn from this, if they haven't already. I am so thankful to still have my precious fingers :)

oh Whoops can Moderator please move this topic to "Safety First" :)

Recipes / Gravlax Recipe
« on: September 28, 2016, 04:33:02 AM »
Saw this Gravlax recipe on Coastside, courtesy of Napa Mike. I had to share it because I want to try it :)

Gravlax

1.5-2lb salmon fillet – skin-on, pin bones removed
 1 cup kosher salt
 4-5 tbsp light brown sugar
2 tbsp peeled and finely grated horseradish (or grated horseradish from a jar)
2 cup raw beetroot peeled and coarsely grated.
 .25 cup schnapps or vodka
Large bunch of fresh dill finely chopped
 1 lemon

Place salmon on a large tray, skin side down, and spoon salt evenly over fillet(s). Scatter the sugar evenly, then spread the grated horseradish and grated beets all over the salmon. Gently pat it down with your hands. Drizzle over the schnapps (or vodka) then sprinkle over all of the chopped dill. Finely grate the zest of the lemon over the fillets, then cover with plastic wrap, then put a weight on top to help pack everything down (I use another tray with a couple of soup cans), then put it in the fridge for 48 hours.

After two days in the fridge, unwrap the fish, push away all of the toppings. Wipe everything off and pat dry with paper towels.

Slice as thinly as possible and serve with your favorite accompaniments.

General Fishing Tips / Homemade Crawdad Traps?
« on: September 27, 2016, 09:50:16 PM »
I'm going to be spending a whole week up in the Sierras soon and I want to make a couple easy crawdad traps to drop overnight and catch some of these yummy crustaceans. Anyone have any suggestions? Or know of anyone selling any for a reasonable price? Trying to find cheapest way to do this because I'm a cheap skate  :smt044

I have a ton of bait to use and may even drop traps around home just to see what I pull up.

It would be fun to get a bunch of folks together and just drop traps and have a big Louisianna style Crawdad feast. I remember I did this up in Hell Hole Resevoir one year, and there were some big ol meaty Crawdads up there!

No pics, but I just wanted to share how amazing it is to know they are less then 5 minutes from my doorstep! After I hooked into it I got it close to the dock, I was running out of line and so I tighten my drag. As soon as the salmon hit the surface and saw the net, he/she jumped and snapped my line! Noooo! I know the saying, no pics it didn't exist, but they do exist!  It was great hooking one before work, just the thrill and excitement, its ok I will get back at it again tomorrow. They are out there folks, go get em!

Oh ya,  I was in Walnut Grove yesterday, and a guy next to me caught a 21lb salmon. Rumor has it on Friday there were over 30 caught there.
