This is a compilation of images and clips from three different kayak rock fishing trips at Cape Mendocino with Loleta Eric, the “other Erik,” and Yaad.  They are from last year.

I tossed it together in a post-covid malaise this week. It was a relatively mild case but still kicked my ass for a few days. The music was my attempt to create a “surfer music” sound in GarageBand.

Please use full screen and nice speakers or headphones.

This really gets me ready to get out there again this coming season!

Those are turbo fins on the one drive on the right.  I broke the idler cable on my one drive with turbos.  :smt004

Well that was certainly easy.

Ordered a cable from my local Hobie dealer.  He said he had 10 on back order already.  I'd get one of those when they came in, but he had no idea how long that would take.  (great)   While I was out, I grabbed three feet of 3/16" shock cord from the local Englund Marine supply.  Cost me a buck.

When I got home I swapped out the cable from one of my "spare" drives, and then put the "temporary bungee fix" on the spare.  Easy as pie.  Now I'm curious so next time I'm at the lagoon I'm taking the bungee fixed drive along to see how it performs.

Thanks!  :smt006

I see 3/16” shock cord, available at Englund Marine near me.  That should do it. I think I'm going to give that a try.  --  :smt004

The more I look online the more attractive the bungee fix seems.  So many places list it as not available, currently on backorder.  I may swap out a cable from one of my V2 drives and put the bungee fix on the older, not often used V2.

Thanks! -- yeah .. I thought about taking them off one drive for the other.  I might if I have trouble getting the part.   thanks again.

Hobie Kayaks / idler cable for early (2016) GT drive

I broke the idler cable yesterday on my early (2016) GT drive.  It looks to me like it's the same size cable as the "classic" V2 idler cable.  That is the same cable fits the both drives.

The only size difference in idler cables seems to be between V1 and V2 drives.

Can anyone verify for me that the idler cable for the V2 and the early GT drives are the same?  ... before I plink down some $$ online?  :smt044

-- as an aside, I really like the thread about the bungee cable temporary fix   :smt003   I'd try that for a temporary fix except I have two spare V2 drives.

I'll just put this right here then.  Happy NCKA Anniversary.  So grateful for this forum and for the friends we meet.   I hope this works.   :smt006

These are great tips. I'll have to try them.  Meanwhile I use my air fryer to reheat fried fish leftovers for fish tacos the next day.  It works great for that for sure.

Yeah, I've had that happen on my Hobie Sport and my Outback.  The first time a good friend came through with a gift of of enough to fix it on the Sport.  The 2nd time I went shopping for something at all the local stores in Eureka, CA.  After initially telling me on the phone they didn't have any in stock, when I went into the store at Pac Outfitters turns out they DID have it. So I bought extra, almost all they had.   I will tell you it's much easier to repair the up/down rudder lines on the larger kayaks, like the Outback, than on the little Hobie Sports.  I didn't buy the Hobie kit and used the same "tubes" that were originally installed. So far everything's working fine. Not any extra water coming in so far.  -- On the most recent trip (early this summer) when the down rudder cable snapped on the Outback, we were able to use an external bungee cable to keep the rudder down for that day.  It was not the best option but it saved the day.

I agree with others ... Blacksmith Perch .. I've caught them in LA Harbor area and on local 1/2 day party boats.

That Donny Darko meme is great.   Reminds me of when I met Eric the first time at Trinidad, long before he became a guide. .... some guy I met on the internet in a fishing forum.   :smt003

Great job at Trinidad, Eric.
