General Fishing Tips / Re: You're favorite peddle kayaks
« on: August 22, 2022, 11:38:14 AM »
I don’t fish the ocean at all and most of the folks on here do, so their advice is based on that experience.

I fish bays, rivers, and lakes and almost everywhere have to get through shallow obstacles like grass, kelp, and general sh^t.

I have more Hobies than I should and they all perform like superstars navigating shallow waters, grass and all that kind of stuff. And for anything with tide and current I love my Revo 13… it performs like a wet Ferrari.

General Talk / Re: Port of Sacramento - Car Break in
« on: July 01, 2022, 01:24:21 PM »
Sorry to hear that happened to you. I'm fairly new to the area and was planning a trip to launch from there. Maybe I should adjust my plans.  :smt009
No don’t ‘not go.’ It fishes better late anyway so go later in the day and fish until almost dark. At that time the place has people around and nothing is likely to happen.

General Talk / Port of Sacramento - Car Break in
« on: June 30, 2022, 09:15:18 PM »
This is just a reminder to those of you that fish the Port to take your wallet, phone, and other stuff with you - do not leave them in the car!

I hit the Port early today (before daylight.) One guy was there in a car and I didn't pay any attention to him. When I got back to my truck around 11:00AM the back rear window had been broken out with broken safety glass everywhere. You can tell they went through the car fast - I think they were just looking for drugs or money. They didn't even steal the wrenches and bottle jack on the floor in the back. But... the rotten bastards went into the center console and took a zippered pouch with all my registrations for my truck, RV, and 2 utility trailers. I think they were just in a hurry and thought something valuable could be in it.

Anyway the whole thing sucked.. please remember not to leave valuable stuff in the car - TAKE IT WITH YOU

PS Been going to the Port for years and never had an issue but I never went this early and I will not again: Oh and even better - I have a $1000.00 deductible on my comprehensive truck insurance - so the repairs are out of pocket.  I'm too old for this early morning shit - I'm staying in bed.

Places to Launch and Camp / Bolinas
« on: May 29, 2022, 10:35:13 PM »
I’d like to cruise Bolinas Lagoon on a high tide, maybe fish for Leopard Sharks and bring my wife on her yak to do some bird watching.  Can anyone help me on where to launch a couple of kayaks?

General Fishing Tips / Re: Nocqua battery for lowrance 7”TI2
« on: February 04, 2022, 04:31:07 PM »
Don’t mean to beat this topic to death but I’m also using my 10 ah Nocqua for my livewell through a 12 to 6 volt converter.  That’s funny! Let me know if that voltage regulator works for you. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I have a nocqua battery that I don’t use due to the issue you describe with the voltage. I’m going to give the voltage regulator a shot!

I had the same issue a few years ago - that’s when I changed to the Bioenno battery.  I just decided on the new yak to try them again because of the size difference. The thing I screwed up was not properly maintaining the old 10 Nocqua by charging it every month. Now, like any battery you leave without maintaining, it doesn’t work right: Takes forever to charge and I don’t trust it.  Not sure how long you’ve had your Nocqua or how you maintained it. I’d charge it up and make sure it’s OK before buying the regulator.  I actually have another Nocqua 10ah, this new 20ah Nocqua, and the Bioenno… and now I make sure to charge them all once a month!

I can’t argue with anything you describe here. But… the voltage drop I saw was dramatic enough in the 2.5 hours of my first test I knew I was going to lose power to my fishfinder before the end of my usual fishing day.  So I needed a solution and Nocqua did have one.

Although I never needed anything to run the Bioenno battery other than just plugging it in - the darn thing is huge! The Nocqua program with the voltage regulator is a better instal for my outback. I have a pro angler as well and will probably switch that over as well.

General Fishing Tips / Nocqua battery for lowrance 7”TI2
« on: February 02, 2022, 09:30:49 PM »
Had a very good experience with Nocqua so thought I would share it here.

I bought a new Hobie outback and when the dealer wired up the fishfinder I chose to go with the new Nocqua 20ah battery over using my old Bioenno 20ah battery.  The Bioenno has been flawless I just wanted to try something smaller that would leave me some space in the hatch.

On my first outing with the Nocqua, in 2.5 hours, the voltage dropped from 12.5 at the start to fluctuating as low as 11.9 as I was hauling the boat out. That was really discouraging considering I could do 2  ‘full’ days with the Bioenno.

I emailed Nocqua with my experience and had some photos to show them. They responded the next day: told me I needed their voltage regulator and sent me one to try.

My next trip was almost 7 hours. With the regulator in place (real simple plug and play device) the voltage read between 12.9 and 13 volts at the start of the day and read the same at the end of the day. When I got home and put it on the charger it showed the battery was 50% discharged - which means I can get 2 days of fishing out of it.  I’m a happy camper!

I obviously shared my story with Nocqua. I appreciated their follow up and help. If you want to purchase something from Nocqua you can contact Heidi, through their website or social media - and if you use my name (Gary Alexander) you can get a discount.

PS. I am not sponsored nor do I get any  money from your purchases.  If they did sponsor me and saw me fish… they would certainly fire me and demand a refund.

I really did appreciate their product and service. We all tend to bitch a lot about stuff. When companies do good work we ought to post it!

Be back in NorCal in April. In the meantime if you’re in Yuma AZ and see an old lizard on a hot rock don’t pee on it.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Sacramento River Trolling
« on: October 07, 2021, 04:21:44 PM »
It's been a few years for me since I chased salmon in the river. Don't anchor!! OK in a boat but not safe in a kayak... don't do it!. You can stay near the bottom by peddling your boat (I'm assuming you have a Hobie or another peddle type yak) then slow and feel the weight hit the bottom - peddle again - slow and feel for the bottom - -and repeat. You'll also see current lines going from the topography of the river or structures in the water - make sure you weave in and out of those.

Loved your post... thanks.  Haven't been to Big Break in a long time.  When I drive over from Davis I've been going to Sugar Barge.  Last time I did that the Rio Vista bridge was a nightmare so probably will not venture over that way again this season but its on the list for next season. Thanks again... and nice pics!

General Talk / Re: Pedal Drive kayak question
« on: June 23, 2021, 02:51:23 PM »
I have a 13' Revo and a PA with the 360. I love the 360 but for straight reverse, I find a quick pull of the cable on the Revo mirage drive to be easier - but when you add wind and tide and want to get the for casting to a target - the 360 is amazing.  Also, have fished the Delta and shallow backwaters of the Colorado River, the mirage drive (with or without 360) is the ticket because you can flutter kick them and get over really shallow stuff.

I know this is a bit late but had the same issue at a parking garage here in Davis.  Didn’t have the yaks on the roof but had the hullivators on.

The clearance sign at the entrance (and the hanging bar you hit if you’re too tall) indicated I was in good shape, I passed under with no problem.  As I went around and up to the second level my rack hit the concrete beam.

The clearance sign at the entrance only applied to the first level but nothing indicated that until I hit the concrete beam. [emoji51]

I had to back up and out - and it really pissed off a lot of people behind me. Oh well!

Not sure where in Penn Valley you’re at. We had a place for years in Lake Wildwood.  OMG it was amazing bass fishing.  I really miss access to that lake. I’ve done a little fishing at Englebrite as well but never had a big day there.  Enjoy your kayaks and the fishing.

For Sale / River style Pontoon Boat PAC 800
« on: May 19, 2021, 02:27:59 PM »
For Sale PAC 800 Pontoon Boat $500.00

I bought this boat from Kiene's Fly Shop (probably) 10 years ago. I used it less than 5 times. Only used in fresh water and ALWAYS stored inflatable pontoons inside.  Boat has aluminum frame and 1 saddlebag and oars.  Really in great condition.  Checked the Outcast website and it looks like this boat is out of stock. Really did not want to sell but age and storage space are taking there toll.

DM if you're interested. Here's a link to the mfg's info on the latest version of this boat. Looks like color is only difference from website image - but could be other changes not visible from picture: https://www.outcastboats.com/product/pac-800-green-gray/
