Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Monterey 7/5
« on: July 04, 2013, 09:39:22 PM »
I'll be heading out of monterey bay kayaks towards sand city for some rock fishing and maybe some halibut bouncing. First time in years for me! Bringing a bud and anyone is welcome to join us. I'll be listening on channel 11 which I think I remember being the NCKA frequented channel? There's a small craft advisory which I expect to chase off by mid morning around 1030 so we will be out around 615 or 630 and may not make it all the way to sand city.

Hey all!
My first time yak fishing in a couple years again is coming up this Saturday and I'm taking a friend out for sand dabs off of San Carlos in Monterey towards the red can. Anyone who wants to join is welcome and I'd appreciate the company as its been a while and I want to make sure I still know how to paddle :p

Hey all. It's been a while since I've gone out fishing as my question shows but I'm gearing up to head out for a paddle tomorrow with the wife. I want to recharge my two identical batteries (one is this http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0036388018049a.shtml and the other is essentially the same but different brand). I can't seem to find the ac adapter I used to use or else the one I have in front of me had the contacts ripped off of it. So what I have is a 1000mA 12v adapter. Is this too high amperage to hook up to my batteries? I see from searching on here that most of you use 500mA chargers. Do I risk blowing my battery up or do I just have to take it off after a short time?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Choosing a kayak rack
« on: July 06, 2008, 04:33:00 PM »
Ok so I got the 2007 Kia Spectra5 with no roof racks factory and I want to get it geared up for some 'yakkin. I notice the Thule system is about 150 bucks more than a Yakima from rackattack.com. So now what I want to know is what system should I go with? Do I need to get hullrollers or does the mako-style saddle work easy enough to load yourself and save the moulah? Any and all chatter about kayak racks may now begin! Educate me! :P

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Choosing a car for a kayaker
« on: July 03, 2008, 10:32:12 AM »
Hey all!
Been a long time since I been around these forums what with college and all but I am now officialy a marine biology graduate from UCSC (in other words I'm unemployed and looking to go kayaking to ease the pain. -.- ). I'm in the market for a new car and want something I can feel comfortable putting two kayaks up on top of. For that reason I have been looking at wagons (not interested in trucks or SUV's with gas prices the way they are) like the mazda3 and kia spectra5.

What I want to know is how safe do you guys think having 2 15' kayaks on a sedan would be? I know I've seen it done but I've never towed with anything but a minivan. Would a kayak rack installed on a 4 door sedan like a hyundai elantra be a good vehicle? Would I need to worry about all the weight on the roof of the car? Maybe these are silly questions but its a concern of mine.

It's a little late but here it is. I headed out alone into the fog from Monterey Bay Kayaks last thursday down towards the spots I hit to the east and did pretty well. The whole day I was using a halibut rig to keep my catch limited to bigger fish. Some areas that used to be hot were slow that day but I went to a couple other places and found loads of olives and vermillions. I trolled a 1lb ball with a halibut rig in the sandy spots between my areas and was rewarded with 2 lings. One under by an inch and one at 25". It was a little odd being out without a GPS alone in flat glassy waters that you couldn't see more than 20 feet out in. It looked like some horror movie. "Lake Placid" or something :) When I got home I came on here and got the recipes for Cal-Asian rockfish and Fish tacos and they both came out great! I love this site!

Yesterday I went in a private boat out of Santa Cruz and hooked 3 kings and 2 silvers. One king at 4 lbs. Another at 16. And the final guy we waited til 2pm for.....a 36 POUNDER! I still am stoked from it! I've got some pictures but I haven't loaded them up yet. I'll get on that tomorrow. Didn't measure his length (tired and forgot  :smt013 ) but did weigh him. Big fish are out there. Just too far out for us to get by kayak. A short ride from the harbor towards west soquel hole will do it if you can rent a skiff for the day.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Thursday 7/13 MBK
« on: July 12, 2006, 06:31:06 PM »
Hey all,
I'm heading out tomorrow morning for lings and rockies from Monterey bay kayaks around 6-630 (I'm figuring I don't need to be early with a report like tomorrow's and how easily I hooked rockfish earlier). Company welcome!

Aliens/Alex and I tried the hotel today with no halibut. It was foggy on and off and got nasty early. I really gave the maiden voyage of my P15 a test. It was sticking the front under a lot. Water-tested my new fishfinder too on the way out when I launched into a set of waves that had me soaked all the way up. Stayed out til about 1030 or so with a catch and release ling on the troll and a rocky. On the way in I saw a couple on a jetski honking their horn in the middle of the kelp beds. Boats were coming up to help and seeing the kelp and just turning away so I headed in and gave them a hold of my fish stringer which was tied to my stern and started paddling like crazy to pull them loose. They came out and were off and I headed in for a smooth landing.

Not a productive trip but it was fun to test everything out. Where are our halibut?!?!

Ocean Kayaks / My new P15 with Humminbird 565 rigged up
« on: June 07, 2006, 06:35:08 PM »
Well I got my 06 prowler 15 from JSelli on Monday and today my Humminbird Fishfinder 565 came in from Cabela's so I went and rigged up. The fishfinder has so much detail it blows my mind. I can't wait to get it out and see it on the water. It has so many features you even have to choose if you are in fresh or saltwater so it can make some kind of correction. It is a dual beam which is the reason I bought this model. I liked my humminbird piranahamax15 and wanted to stay in the company but needed an upgrade for the new boat. Unfortunately it also costs an arm and a leg.

Thanks to Mooch for many ideas (I've been lurking through your thread ;) ) on how to rig it up.

Here's the pics:

I guess I'll post pics of the rest of the work when the rod holders and what not come in. One day (hopefully soon) I will put a rudder on it and I'll post that up too.

Anyone want to hit halibut on either of these days? I've got a new yak from JSelli and I'm stoked to get it out.

General Fishing Tips / Piranhamax15 won't turn on. Ideas?
« on: June 04, 2006, 10:31:14 PM »
Hey all,
I don't want to send my unit in for repairs because the repairs cost more than the fishfinder. I have a unit that will not turn on. I bought a replacement head on ebay (who knows if it works) but it still won't turn on. When I called customer support the first question they asked was is the transducer ok. I have it glued inside and I don't put rods or anything in there so I think it is ok but could it be the problem? Should I buy a replacement transducer?

The halibut search continues. Paul/Nomad and I headed out of MB kayaks towards the hotel to look for halibut around 600. No luck with the halibut but man was there a ton of bait. Paul was marking for what seemed like miles of solid bait off the hotel from 80ft inwards. The largest patch turned out to be squid which we caught a few of and used for live bait. Later the jack smelt showed up boiling at the surface from some unknown predator or for some unknown prey. I caught 5 of these guys and used some for live bait. I got one that was larger than any mackerel or smelt I'd ever seen. Must have been a foot but he managed to jump over my halibut line and tangle himself up and get loose. The sealions were out in force both harassing me :) and getting their fill of fish. Birds were scattered but constantly diving. About 815 the fog came back with a strong wind that started whitecapping and we decided it might be time to head in. About 10 minutes into our paddle it cleared and the wind died again. The fog has been rolling in and burning off repeatedly the last few days. We spent our last 2 hours moseying on back through some rockfish areas as we couldnt seem to find sand. We caught quite a few which of course we released. Complete lack of swell made for an easy landing and pushoff. No halibut but we know what to do come July 1st.

Fish Talk / Jobs for marine biologists?
« on: May 25, 2006, 08:15:19 PM »
I'm a biology/marine biology student and I'm going off to UCSC this fall as a junior. I plan on going to graduate school as well. I am interested in marine biology with a particular interest in cnidarians (mostly anthozoa) as well as ichtyology or really anything but microplankton. Lately ive been leaning towards ichtyology as it seems more practical. Focusing on cnidarians seems like a harder field to enter. I don't really want to get into biochem (I don't want to take physical chemistry!  :smt003 ) so I'm having trouble thinking of real-world applications.

So those of you who are marine biologists (i know that at least the moderator here is), what fields do you suggest looking into? What fields do you see the most demand for under a marine biology major?
