For Sale / New Harken Hoister Storage System - $100
« on: February 09, 2011, 05:28:32 PM »
Fellow NCKA-ers,

Is your garage filled with so much stuff there's no room for the car? Here's a practical solution. Go vertical! With the Harken Hoister you can store car top recreational equipment up and out of the way.

Here are a few storage ideas for this 4-Point lifting system: kayaks, canoes, dinghies, cartop sports equipment carriers, Jeep tops, truck caps, or storage shelves.

Best of all, you can hoist/lower these large items onto your car by yourself. A self-locking, ball bearing block system prevents accidental release - even if you drop the line.

Part No. = 7803B
# of Lifting Points = 4
Working Load Limit = 145 lbs
Min. Lifting Load = 45 lbs
Max. Vertical Lift = 10 ft
Mechanical Advantage = 6:1

This top of the line system retails for $150, but I'm willing to part with it for $100. I'll also throw in the additional mounting hardware I picked-up from Home Depot for your installation.

Why I'm selling it... After getting it home and reading the manual I determined that I could not use it in my garage because I have a drop-down beam that "gets in the way". The hoist itself is still untouched, in the box.

If you're unfamiliar with this hoist just Google it and you'll quickly discover that it's one of the top of the line product of its type!

Thanks!

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Nice Splash Pants from IR
« on: March 10, 2010, 04:58:00 PM »
Anybody looking for splash pants may want to consider these new ones from IR with integrated 2-mil neoprene booties. Had I just not picked-up a pair of Kokatat Tempest pants I might have considered these, although they retail for a few bucks more...

BTW, the best deal I was able to find on the tempest pants was $135 delivered.

General Talk / Poor Mrs. Wilkens...
« on: February 25, 2010, 02:55:32 PM »
Sorry, someone sent this to me and I couldn't resist posting  :smt046

Jeff (a.k.a. Steelerhead)

A week after her husband disappeared in a kayaking accident an Anchorage woman answered her door to find two grim-faced Alaska State Troopers...

"We're sorry  Mrs. Wilkens, but we have some information about your husband", said one Trooper.
"Tell me, did you find him?" Mrs. Wilkens shouted.
The Troopers looked at one another.
One said, "We have some bad news, some good news, and some great news.  Which do you want to hear first?"
Fearing the worst, an ashen Mrs. Wilkens said, "Give me the bad news first."
The trooper said, "I'm sorry to tell you, maam, but this morning we found your husband's body in Kachemak Bay."
"Oh my God!" exclaimed Mrs. Wilkens. Swallowing hard, she asked, "What's the good news?"
The trooper continued, "When we pulled him up, he had 12 twenty-five pound king crabs and 6 good-size Dungeness crabs clinging to him."
Stunned, Mrs. Wilkens demanded, "If that's the good news, what's the great news?"
"We're going to pull him up again tomorrow."

Places to Launch and Camp / California Boat Launch Ramp and Put-in Index
« on: February 24, 2010, 11:17:46 PM »
Here's a pretty cool online resource listing CA launch sites including details (where provided) such as an overview of the launch, directions, parking, facilities, amenities, cautions, and kayak fishing info. People are encouraged to add new sites and/or add content to existing sites listed. You can also upload pictures and GPS routes.

P.S. I added a few launch sites based on info obtained from Dave Swenson's Google maps-type site at http://tinyurl.com/2el5mz

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Promar Crab Traps - Another Group Buy
« on: November 02, 2009, 11:55:37 PM »
Fellow NCKA'ers -

For those that missed the last group by put together by Ben...

I'll take the lead and contact Karen at Hook 1 to see if she can order for us the new style Promar collapsible crab traps (TR-102w) with integrated escape rings.

WHO'S INTERESTED?

Estimated cost per trap is ~$27 (this assumes a 20% bulk discount from Hook 1 and includes tax & shipping to me). I'll refine the exact cost after I confirm interest level, and work out the details with Karen.

You'd need to pick-up your trap(s) from me somewhere along my daily trek between Gilroy-San Jose-Milpitas.

STILL INTERESTED??? PM me with your contact info and the # of traps you'd want.

Fish Talk / Study Finds More Mercury in Freshwater Fish
« on: August 21, 2009, 04:22:43 PM »
From the mass media...

A study released by the U.S. Geological Survey found mercury in every  freshwater fish  from nearly 300 streams that were tested, an astonishing result because mercury has usually been associated with large  saltwater fish.

Making no judgment calls on this - Just passing along what's being communicated to "Joe Consumer".

Hi Folks,

Based on an initial recommendation I received from Yakhopper and some positive reviews, I'm pretty settled on picking-up the Diawa Saltist 30, but am unsure on why I'd want one model over another. Gear Ratio: 6.1 : 1
Weight (oz): 17.3
Line Capacity (test / yds): MONO 20/295, 25/230 - BRAID 40/380, 50/280
Drag Max: 15.4

Model #: 30TH
Gear Ratio: 6.4 : 1
Weight (oz): 23.2

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Humminbird 383c Feedback Sought...
« on: July 30, 2009, 10:58:08 AM »
Hey Gang,

Now that I have my OK Trident 15, I'm looking for a FF/GPS combo to fit under the "Sonar Shield". Something keeps bringing me back to the Humminbird 383c Fish Finder and GPS Chartplotter.

Any feedback on this product or recommendations on another alternative?

Only requirements I have are:

1) fits under "sonar shield"
2) is a FF/GPS combo unit
3) is in the < $400 range

Thanks all!

General Talk / Sun Warpage Question
« on: July 21, 2009, 11:59:05 AM »
Hi Gang,

I just took ownership of my shiny new toy... A OK Trident 15. I live in Gilroy where it regularly gets into the low triple digits in the summer. Right now I have the T-15 in a heavy-duty dark green nylon kayak cover, laying on it's side along side the house, where it does get some direct sunlight for a few hours a day.

How worried should I be about sun warpage?

Hi Friends!

I'm looking for the best price on the Wheeleez Kayak Cart-Beach (WZ1-KCB) w/ "good" polyurethane wheels. NOT interested in the PVC "treaded" tires.

I would like to purchase from one of the stores that support NCKA but am also tight on funds these days (who isn't...)

I'm down here in Gilroy, but make it all over the south & east bay with work and all. I'm also a REI member and they want $200 for the item but I'll get some of that back with my member dividend and there's no shipping if I have it sent to my local store.

OH, AND THE BEST NEWS OF ALL...

After 6+ months of reading/learning/demoing and shopping around -- My 2009 Ocean Kayak Prowler Trident 15 Angler Edition w/ Rudder in Mango was delivered last week!!! Can't wait to get er in the water (probably a local lake to begin) and practice some self-rescues.

I would like to thank everyone on the best dang online fishing community for all of your help along the way, especially "The Erics" (Yakhopper and EWB)!

See ya out there... Jeff (a.k.a. Steelerhead)

Ocean Kayaks / T13 vs. T15
« on: April 03, 2009, 12:39:49 PM »
Hi Gang  :smt006

This yak newbie is looking for your thoughts and advice...

I getting ready to "take the plunge" and purchase my first boat, and after talking to the support team at OK had pretty much decided on the Trident 15. Some of what led me twds the 15 vs. 13 were the increased deck space, better speed, and better stability characteristics.

In reading the OK portion of this thread I am noticing a ton of chatter on the T13 but not much at all when it comes to the T15. Are are people's thoughts on comparing the two boats?

As far as I can tell the only functional difference between the two is the change in design on the foot braces vs. the molded-in foot wells (pros/cons of each?)...

Thanks,
Jeff (a.k.a. Steelerhead)
