Alot of good info there Mark, thanks for that!
I did end up getting a new Lowrance Eagle 5 Splitshot…
It was the most popular # on google. 000-16111-001
Found it for $307 out the door online! 5-6 days out.
I’ll be adding the 20/50 fathom lines on that for sure,
should be easy peasy on that one.

Get that Ling Cod yet?

Look forward to your review.  Would like to see if the Autotuning Sonar feature works well.

I really think the SD Slots are poorly designed and easy for corrosion to ruin it. Should still try another card just in case it's the card being the issue.

On my less fancy Lowrance it showed up under files and was easy to load.  It's possibly the card or the card reader, just not sure.  If it's the reader i'd try inserting it over and over again to see if it might get contact on a corroded contact.  See if you can see any corrosion come out from doing that.  If you had a known good card you could recognize in there before that would help narrow down the issue.  If it has a wifi capability, sounds like that would be a better option, but not sure how to troubleshoot that.  I definetly would like a wifi option for offloading data.  Then I would automate backing up data every trip.  I have a backup already, but have to put the card in, write it, and then stick it into a usb reader in the office.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Descender Weight
« on: May 01, 2024, 05:13:34 PM »
Has anyone tested retrieving what might be a larger fish at slower retrieval from deeper water? I will try and report when the time arises.

I have not had issues with barotrauma at inshore  because most of my inshore fishing in a kayak is usually no more than 80 ft in places I frequent around the Monterey bay
According to this PDF from the DFG on barotrauma: https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=36345

Myth: Reeling a fish in slowly prevents barotrauma.
Fact: Rockfish cannot acclimate to the pressure drop even when reeled in slowly.

Quote
Myth: You can tell by looking whether a fish will survive or die.

According to published results of a Sea Grant
study led by researchers at Cal State Long Beach:
The degree of barotrauma in a fish is not a reliable
predictor of its survival. The most significant
predictor of post-release survivorship is the time a
fish spends at the surface.

Descend them all please, regardless of what they look like.

-Allen

If a fish can go down on it's own, lets say quick release at the water line, does that also mean that it's being less subjugated to the stress of barotrauma?

I have a 2.5lb fin weight I'm going to use, it has a snap at the very end of the fin to attach your dr release clip so I'll point it straight down. At the moment I plan on using a hand-line to descend, but I'm more than tempted to use my DR, which seems like it would be easy to control on descent and retrieve.

No, it would not apply as that is clearly not electric powered.  :smt002

Does this qualify?

Could probably get to the fishing spot faster than me, haha.

A motor is a motor  :smt003

I don't see why not.  It's a motorized kayak  :smt003

Damn that's exactly what I've been hoping for is a day like that.  I love tossing those small keitechs!  So much fun on my light rod when they load up.  And an UPGRADE cat!?  WHAT!?  Sure sounds better than buying and tending to minnows all day.
