Good luck out there!

I'm thinking about going myself tomorrow morning. It's all depending on how you guys do today, so I'm hoping to see your report and fish.

Are you guys mainly mooching? How deep?

I'm still thinking about going. I got a tandem hobie kayak that uses those foot pedals, but I only have one person. Think it's doable to launch? Or if anyone just wants to sit in the 2nd spot, just bring your own gear if you want.

PM me if anyone's interested or wants to carpool. If I do go, I'll be leaving from west San Jose near Cupertino area around 4:30. I've never been fishing around MBK, do you guys just meet up and launch at del monte?

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Albion 7/6
« on: July 04, 2012, 04:58:59 PM »
I will be at Albion in the morning to catch some sea urchins and do some fishing afterwards. What should I go for? I've pretty much caught rockfish there but nothing else and was thinking whether or not it's worth it to try for salmon.

How far out would the salmon be? The seas have always been choppy there and so I never go too far out.

General Fishing Tips / Re: General Crabbing Tips

I've tried different types of bait, squid, fish carcass etc. and I find that chicken drumsticks or quarter size chicken legs are the best. They're cheap and best of all, it takes a while for crabs to eat them because it's tough to rip apart.

Whenever I use squid and pull up the cages, I see the crabs eating viciously away my squid. Squid is just easy to rip apart and eat while its in the cages whereas chicken provides the same attraction but harder to get to for the crabs.

What conditions do you look for when fishing? Is it because of a mixed swell that causes fish to stop biting or moving away from the shore?

Also, where to fish? After launching, do you head out northwest or more inward southeast where it's more protected? Or does this again depend on the conditions?

Yep, I should have stated that I wasn't going solo. I have two other friends on their tandem kayak along with me and another person on my kayak.

I think I'll stay away from Bean from a while and go with an easier launch at Pigeon Point. From the looks of it, I found the stairs on the southeastern side of pigeon point. How do the swells compare to Albion? (It must have been 6-8 feet at least) I've fished there before and it was pretty rough, but then again, Albion was a much easier launch.

Hi,

After being skunked at Capitola 2 times (well, not exactly, caught some kingfish, perch and anchovies, but nothing decent like halibut or rockfish), I've decided to try someplace that's not been fished out, i.e. pressured from the tens of rental skiffs that are found at Capitola.

I've been looking at some Bean Hollow and Pigeon Point reports, and they seem to be doing pretty well, for what it's worth. However, I've never actually launched from a beach site before and was wondering which place is easier to launch. And...I've looked up the swell forecast from stormsurf.com and NOAA - 4-6 feet swell on Saturday. Not sure if these are the conditions for launching, but I think that the smaller summer swells are as a good a time as any to learn.

If it's too difficult to launch at the center, I might just head to the edge of Bean Hollow where the waves are considerably smaller. Might have to carry/take the kayak a further distance though.

Just contacted them again to confirm. Even if no one is at the gate, you just pay beforehand and then when you come out, they check if you've paid earlier. This is what happened to me last time.

I still have one more PVC pipe. I made them a little shorter, about 34" because I just measured my arm length and 40" seems too long.

Yes, it is an early AM tide at around 6:15 AM. I'll be launching from Lawson's Landing, arriving there at around 5 and hopefully on the water by 5:30.

Yes, oops. Today is the 19th. haha

Hey,

I'm going clamming at Tomales this upcoming Sunday on the 19th. I'm also building those PVC tubes to prevent holes from caving in.

I already have others who are willing to split with us, but we'll have one extra (15" diameter, ~40" length) that will be for $40. For comparison, the ones at Lawson's Landing are $35 w/o tax and 12" diameter, 36" length.

I'm located in San Jose, so if anyone's interested in buying one, just let me know or PM me.

I had a friend construct a hollow tube made of sheet metal. It's around 25" in diameter and 30" deep, and I have to say, it looks pretty gigantic. Now the only problem is fitting it on my kayak. I have a hobie tandem kayak, so does anybody have any ideas? It has fishing pole holders, so I just thinking about putting some PVC pipes to hold it in place without physically tying it down and then praying that I won't flip.

Darn, I live in San Jose, so Benicia is a little too far for me. I'm thinking about using other things besides PVC pipes, maybe old trash cans with the bottom cut out or other things.

Hmm...then are those large PVC pipes absolutely necessary? I don't know where to get them, and even so, aren't they somewhat expensive? I also have no idea how those things are going to fit on my kayak.

General Fishing Tips / Tomales Bay Clamming??
« on: July 07, 2010, 09:54:04 AM »
Hi,

I'm planning on going clamming this weekend up at Tomales Bay / Lawson's Landing. I've been clamming before in Oregon and used shrimp pump guns to get gaper and horseneck clams. I was wondering if this technique would work as well? I found a YouTube video that pretty much describes what I did up in Oregon at Coos Bay.

Look around the 3:50 - 4:00 mark and you'll see that you pump the shrimp gun to loosen the dirt/mud around the hole created by the siphon and then you just wiggle your hand down there to get it. I'm wondering if the dirt/mud in Lawson's Landing is similar to this or do I really need PVC pipes and shovels.
