Are the giant Mac's common in SC at certain times of the year?

And do they show up in HMB/Pacifica?  I've only caught smelt-sized version in HMB once or twice in Sept when the water is warmest.

What are you calling "giant Mac's"?  Looks like they are catching both pacific mackerel and jack mackerel (Spanish).

I think he is referring to the Pacific macs.

I dunno.  Those jack mackerel get larger than the pacifics.  But that's why I asked, to clarify.

Yes, please do let us know.  I would love to have some freshly caught and not prepackaged shipped from overseas! They are some of my favorite fish to fry on a skillet served with daikon and ponzu!!
You cooked them? Bleed and iced right away, when you get home pat dry vacuum and you will have the best sashimi! The only pain is removing the middle bones.

after deep freeze for 2 weeks, I salted for 1 hour, rinsed, then, rice vinegar and water for 20 minutes, then rinsed
better than any mackerel I've had at a sushi restaurant (outside of Japan)

The 2 types of mackerel can take very different preparation.  The pacific is does well Saba style, or grilled or smoked.  The Jack mackerel are way more lean.  Prepare like sushi restaurant do Aji, as they are more closely related to those.

I was out last Saturday and saw a ton of mackerel.  12"-to over 20". Couldn’t drop my squid down without getting hit. I used one to catch a Ling. They were every where. And so were the birds.. I will be back out on Friday.  Will report.

Non existent. Been waiting for them. Usually they can even be found inside HMB HARBOR.

Not the same Spanish mackerel as in the SE.  They are just commonly called Spanish Mack’s.  You catch them on sabiki, same as the Pacifica, often they are mixed in together.
