I’ve heard the term “straight bait” many times in reference to salmon trolling. I’ve never really understood exactly what that meant.
1. As in, no hardware, flasher, dodger etc…?
2. As in a bait that swims straight, no bend or rotation?

Would anyone be so kind as to clarify and share rigging tips?
Thanks

my understanding is no bling, flashers, dodgers, other additional attractants for flash....gotta have a slight bend but who knows, I bet they’ll hit a piece o’ bait in front of their face if they’re annoyed or hungry....

I think its just sexual preference.

My bait prefers to wear a hoochie skirt, I still consider it straight bait.

No judgments here tho

Traditionally means just a wire baiter, cable baiter, or crowbar. So just an anchovy with nothing else. Yes the bait rotates in the water.

But even though that is the "correct" definition some people will say straight bait when they run an inline flasher or a bait holder head.

It definitely changes by who says it.

I view it as cable/wire baiter, crowbar, etc. basically no plastic on it.

As opposed to FBR, RSK, crippled, or other plastic helmet devices.

Implies no flasher/dodger unless specifically mentioned.

Was waiting for a few good ones like it and the poop smith didn’t disappoint!

The fact that the use of the word can vary depending on whose telling the fish story makes sense. Thanks for the replies.
