I crabbed the mouth of the Eel yesterday morning with about 25-30 other boats (no other yaks!).  It was slow, and there was gear every 10-20 yards at most.  It was a zoo!  I heard that only the guys who went at midnight did well.  I was down there checking out who was going at midnight, but skipped it since there was no moon and my light wasn't fresh.  I should've gone... Last year I had a great time doing that and I slayed 'em.  This year I only got some shorts and had to leave early to keep waning WAF up...  Haven't heard Humboldt Bay reports yet.

Excellent reporting, guys!

42.5"!!!!  I'm glad we're not going to length until next year~ :smt004

Can't wait for next year.  I'm getting geared-up to be able to weigh, measure, photo and release whenever possible, but it'll be a learning experience...

Sounds like Salt Pt. area and other Central Coast spots are likely as hot as Humboldt...

General Talk / Ling videos?

I've been having fun taking short videos of me with lings that I release.  Are these attachable to a report?

Thanks, Brian and Sean.  Ab pool next year, right?...

Here's my final work on the scale calibration:

Thanks, Stuart.

Wow, Wife Approval...  that sounds like some kind of Sci-Fi trip to me at this point!  She just doesn't understand how legitimate it is that this stuff keeps me sane!   :smt013 :smt004 :smt005 :smt002 :smt008 :smt010 :smt006 :smt001

Another excellent report, Sean.  NIce work, and it's typical at this point that you spent much of your time being not only a guide but a yakking divemaster-equivalent!  "Yak-Master"?...  WTG.

Jmairey--you're right on regarding the long period swell phenomenon--I'm preaching that to my mates all the time, and we definitely noticed it up here over the past several days.  The south and west swells with the long period act differently than the usual north swell pattern and have the potential to really surprise you in a familiar and usually waveless channel when a big set comes in every 5-10 minutes.

Another thing, Sean:  I saw how the forecast for Cape Mendo to Pt. Arena held at 5 knots and low swell all the way to Saturday night then mentioned 5-7' picking up iin the afternoon.  Then on Sunday, as I thought I'd be sitting home hating the fact that the ocean was epic again, I noted that it picked up on all buoys to around 7' and blowing more than predicted.  As you said earlier in another thread, the north coast winds and weather are much much more volatile than elsewhere...  WTG again on getting some fish.

Thanks, guys.  Go, Skyboy, Go!  Thanks for the compliments.   :smt002

Pete:  sorry I forgot to reply earlier.  Shelter Cove and areas around it are favorite destinations for me.  While the Cove area is kind of fished over within a mile or two of port, the Old Man and the Hat still hold their claims to fame as awesome offshore rockfish reefs.  I haven't gone there on my yak--too far, but I've scored plenty of nice fish near the Cove, including a 21.5# salmon last summer, and lots of 10"+ abs there and around there.

As for the remainder of this ling season:  good luck and I mean it!  I hope someone bags the big bucket-head and gets the report on here--that's what it's all about.  NOTE:  Wednesday's Cape Mendocino to Pt. Arena forecast is sounding VERY SWEET.  I don't know if I'll be able to fenagle another trip out of the WAF that I have (and I've been meaning to get someone to tell me WTF WAF is!!), but I will be doing whatever I have to in order to get a trip that day.  May go to Trinidad for Ling/Ab combo trip...

...and as far as an abalone pool for next year, sounds good!   :smt003 :smt004

Sounds good--not just because it's good for me! :smt004--thanks for the response on that.  That's how it should be.

I posted on the fishing reports board that I will put photos on tomorrow of the scale comparison, so there should be no question about it.  There are a few responses on that board that indicate that it's not clear enough, and I only want credit if those people are happy with the photos of the comparison.

I spent about an hour in the shop this evening, and after dinner I finalized my comparison and calibration.  With top hooks of both scales nailed to the floor and bottom hooks linked together I was able to show that my old spring scale is consistently about a pound or more light in its reading.  At first I was thrown off by hanging each of them and testing by pulling down or attaching my weightbelt, but I figured out that gravity and the weight of the lower scale were affecting that.  That's when I figured to put both scales on the plywood subfloor and link them in a direct comparison of pounds of pressure.  I pulled each in both directions too so I could make sure they weren't just stuck on a favorable reading.  I have photos of the process and results, but they're too high in KB to load at home.  I'll burn them and load them from work tomorrow where I can shrink them down.  Between that and Bill announcing on the tournee board that I'm in the lead I feel good about it.   :smt001

I did some comparison work with a digital Berkeley scale and it showed that my old spring scale is consistently a pound or so light, so I claim 24#!  That should make it clean for Brian, but I am certainly not claiming to be beyond any questioning.  I hope the look and length of the fish speaks for itself.

Did anyone ever answer the question that surfaced a few weeks ago:  can someone catch, weigh, photo, and release a ling all the way up 'til 12/31 and be included in the pool?

Regarding the shots of the scale:  the sun was higher than the scale, the photographer was lower, so the shadow vs the line of sight shakes out to 23.5#...

I know that's not the most precise analysis!  I am in the process right now of calibrating my scale with an electronic Berkeley unit.  I'll get back on here with some results, but I'll admit right now that my preliminary work on this before I was called in for dinner did not look good for me...

23.5"er, 40" long

13768
This one's my favorite - that lingcod looks kinda average next to that little ab!  That's the 10.375"er I pulled.  This concludes my report - I'll put something on the tournees page too.

40" - check this by finding an '02 Silverado tailgate!

I've got to come up with a better stance...
