Fish Talk / Re: Weird thing ID?
« on: August 11, 2021, 12:26:52 PM »
Yep, most anemones can move around a bit, but tend to stay in one place for long periods of time.  Some species move more than others.  There are few species that can even swim a bit, but most species move along like a snail, but slower.   They can also completely detach and let the currents push them around until they find a new place to hang out.

Here's a time lapse of an anemone in a tank moving around.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I also just added date verification.

Okay, I think I've fixed the date errors.   I'm still trying to figure out how to prevent it in the future.

I still check in once in awhile.  Having moved to Portland back in 2007, I tend to spend most of my time on NWKA these days.  The occasional fish ID post usually gets me back here in a hurry.

The anal fin isn’t in focus, but looks slanted like a Chinook.

Fish Talk / Re: Fish ID apps?

I haven't tried it on fish yet, but iNaturalist is a great app to get just about any species ID'd.   First you take a photo and upload it with the app then two things happen..
First, the image analysis ai takes a crack at it, and usually comes up with some pretty good first guesses.
Second, if you submit it for identification a bunch of iNaturalist members, who have some expertise, will also try and ID the photo.  But this step last step takes a few days.

That said, I would only do that with weird fish you might accidentally catch.  For the fish you're actually targeting, it's best to just learn the fish before you head out.

Yellowtail and Black RF.

This was the correct answer.  The fish on the left is a yellowtail rockfish and the one of the right is a black rockfish.

First, thanks to Brian Steves for all his hard work in being our webmaster.  His salary of $0 is well earned.

F.Y.I.  No need to thank me or pay me, I'll be selling your emails, passwords, and catch data to both Cambridge Analytica and the Russians.

Will you be replacing the older archives too?
I only see 2017.

Thanks

That's part of the 5% I haven't finished.  I have the old archives, I just need to do a bunch of search/replace to get them to work properly and then add them back in.
Other things that need fixing.. random AOTY references (instead of DOTY).... getting the sponsors to show up properly.

Oh.. I almost forgot... the site is now much more mobile friendly and if my test trial with NWKA is any indication the upload issues you might have been experiencing should be a thing of the past.   So feel free to upload your catch directly from your phones if you want.

DOTY / New Updated DOTY Site is now live
« on: February 21, 2018, 05:03:43 PM »
I've been working on upgrading the DOTY/AOTY sites ever since they went down last fall.  After a successful upgrade of the NWKA AOTY site, I finally upgraded the DOTY site today (we had a snow day here in Portland).

I'm about 95% done with the upgrade, but everything should be functional at this point.

Because it is a new system, your old passwords are no longer valid.  I migrated over all of your registration info, but you'll have to reset your passwords via the "Forgot your password?" link on the sign in page.   Assuming you remember which email you registered with and it was a valid email address, you should receive a password reset email from me "bsteves@northwestkayakanglers.com"

If you have problems, feel free to email me directly about it and I'll get you sorted out.

I’ll take a look tomorrow during my lunch hour.   Tonight is my game night and I have a Manhattan or two waiting for me.

That happened last Thursday just a few miles south of Depoe Bay, OR on HWY 101.    The Oregon Rockfish Classic (NWKA's largest tournament) was held on Saturday in Depoe Bay and many of us were effected by closed highway while driving to the event on Thursday afternoon.

The photos are pretty impressive.
