General Talk / Recreational crab traps
« on: June 16, 2023, 06:13:21 PM »
Headed over to Trinidad next week. Looks like traps are still ok in zone 1&2, figured I would ask those who are more familiar with any changes than I am.

General Talk / New roto molded Hobie Passport
« on: July 24, 2022, 10:19:35 AM »
Was looking to get the wife an OT 106 PDL. Then I saw the new Passports 10.5’ and think they may serve the purpose well. She isn’t fishing just wants to cruise around with me while I fish and take photos of the sights. Maybe an occasional trip on the bay or Out of Trinidad when it’s flat. What are y’all’s thoughts on the new offering?

General Talk / Will the price bubble pop?
« on: June 30, 2022, 08:03:35 AM »
With the constant price increases with everything when do you think they will stop, level out or return to some form of normal?
We just had to have a new well drilled, pricing went up 35% from last summer when we got estimates, $17k went to $25K. Kayaks seem to be no different. How much will folks pay for kayaks? When will they reach a price point above where the consumer will pay?

Craftsmen's Corner / Kayak trailer
« on: April 25, 2022, 02:06:54 PM »
I am almost done with my kayak trailer.
I watched Craigslist for a while and this free boat trailer came up last winter. Been slowly getting around to it. I shortened the tongue an installed a new coupler. Added new lighting. I am using 3” pvc that scored for free as well. The bunks are only mounted at each end to let them sag and conform to the shape of the hull. Still letting the kayaks sit in the bunks for a few days before attaching the rear of the bunks to allow them to sag a bit more.  The bottom bunks aren’t attached yet. Will get to them tonight.

CA Regulations / Dungeness crab possession limit.
« on: December 07, 2021, 07:58:53 PM »
Just looking for clarification. Daily and possession limit is 10 crabs. Which m wens you may not have more than 10 in possession, cooked or frozen? That means you cannot catch limits on consecutive days unless you have consumed or given away a previous days limit, correct?

Craftsmen's Corner / Kayak trailer
« on: October 17, 2021, 03:13:50 PM »
I picked up a free boat trailer several months ago. I am finally getting around to working on making it into a 4 kayak trailer. The tongue was bent up a bit so I figured it would be easier to cut the damage off and just shorten up the trailer. After finishing the tongue I cut off the old bunks and mounts. It got windy today so I wasn’t able to get much welding done so I installed new lights and wiring.
I will be using 3” pvc pipe for my new bunks. They will be 10’ long for my 13’ kayaks and 8’ for the 10’ sit ins my wife and daughter use. They will be fastened on the ends and allowed to sag and conform the the shape of the hulls.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Best way to rig for live bait lingcod

My biggest question is how may guys use sliding weights? Who uses fixed weights? What do you find more effective?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / What brand of braid?
« on: September 13, 2021, 06:08:43 AM »
So many choices on braid out there. What have you had good luck with?
I’m thinking of a coated braid like Power Pro slick 8 or spider wire stealth. What are you running with good longevity for saltwater use?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Trevala vs trevala px
« on: September 08, 2021, 08:15:37 PM »
Anyone fishing the PX? Is it worth the extra $40-50? Might have to go that route since the 7’ml is hard to come by. Any other rods that are as good or better than the trevala?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Conventional reel recommendation?
« on: September 05, 2021, 06:37:19 PM »
After fishing with my Penn Squall 20 for a few hours I decided it is too big for my kayak needs. So looking for a reel to pair with my Tiger 7’ rod for jigging  and live baiting rockfish.
What do you all recommend?
Would like to stay with a conventional style level wind and not a low pro. Thanks.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Making a rod float
« on: September 03, 2021, 06:08:16 AM »
I have dropped 2 rods into the water over the last year, luckily both were recovered. As I explore the saltwater I bit more I’m thinking I better do something to prevent a couple hundred dollars from sinking to the bottom of the ocean. While I am not a fan of a foam wrapped rod I am less of a fan of a leash. They seem to get caught on everything. So I’m thinking a pool noodle or pipe insulation would be the wisest choice for me.
So my question is how long of a piece of foam is needed? It’s an ugly stik tiger with a Penn Squall 20 reel. I hoping to avoid the add foam and see if it floats method. Lol. Thanks.

General Fishing Tips / Humboldt bait fish
« on: August 29, 2021, 06:55:32 PM »
So I caught some shiner perch for bait last week. Had fun and caught a nice 26” long with them. But wanted to be sure of any regulations or limits on them? Regulations show a limit of 20. Is this correct? Just don’t want to run into issues while having fun on the water. Really don’t see having more than 20 for bait anyway but want to know the regulations anyhow. Thanks.
