What a jerk!  I tried to buy it too.

I think NolanDuke's PB lingcod was well deserved.  He built up a great deal of karma by helping me get my dad out on the water.  My dad turned 75 this year and is in reasonably good health.  He lives in the Philadelphia area and I credit him with instilling a love of fishing in me from an early age.  I think he took us fishing more for our enjoyment than for his own, but he always happily got out of bed when I'd try waking him up well before dawn.

Fishing on the open ocean is quite a bit different than the small lakes and bays we used to fish together growing up, and when I offered up a trip to HMB, my dad was a bit skeptical.  When I told him NolanDuke was offering up his AI, I think the added stability of outriggers helped convince him to go.  We totally set up my dad with all the gear and offered him our best guiding services.  Although it was a little slow morning we had a steady pick of rockfish and we each got a nice fish to put on the dinner table.  My 27" ling was perfect filet size and his 23" Cabezon put up a nice fight before ending up in a nice tomato based stew over roasted potatoes.  We were very grateful for the opportunity to spend a great day on the water together and watch that huge beast of a lingcod go into the net.

Nice shots Tommy!  We hiked the bear gulch cave and also loved it.  Didn't see a condor that close up though - cool stuff.

Safety First / Re: Worst Injury?

Well, my first mistake may have been deciding to take another full grown man fishing on my Malibu Two XL tandem sit on top.  He loves fishing but wasn't too confident in taking out his own kayak, so me and a buddy (in his own Outback) decided to take him out fishing the reefs outside Gerstle Cove.  We actually had a great day with lots of action, and that Malibu Two was more stable than I would have predicted.  It was also nice having some assistance on paddling.

We got into a routine where I would take any fish he caught off the hook and place them in the kill bag near me.  Towards the end of the trip, he swung a particularly large vermillion specimen my way, but instead of grabbing the line, I reached toward fish and one of the spines on that sucker buried itself deep into the palm of my hand.  I guess they really do have some venom on them, because that was some intense pain.  I was glad to have him doing most of the paddling for me on the way back in!  And yes, that debt is still being repaid in beer.

Although most of my "experience" at Moss involves skunking, I have launched out the Jaws enough to offer a little advice.  I agree the forecast looks doable, as NolanDuke and I were debating a "sick" day tomorrow to give it a go.  Sadly, I won't be able to join you, but good luck.

Assuming you want to launch around first light, you might be fighting an incoming tide, but the swing is not that bad.  Depending if you have a motor, pedals, or paddle, it might affect your assessment of how difficult that would be.  The wind looks reasonable too, but I wouldn't really want to be fishing at Mulligans much past 11 since it looks like the wind could come up anytime after noon.  I wouldn't want to have to go through the washing machine while also dealing with whitecaps.  I did that last weekend.

General Talk / Re: Interest in Kayak Rentals?

Funny you ask - I just saw this posting on CL earlier in the week:
https://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/spo/d/pacifica-rent-my-kayak-hobie-14-tandem/7469320909.html

A lot of people in this community are willing to lend a kayak to a fellow member if they need one, so $250/day seems pretty steep.  That being said, I could imagine some scenarios where you could generate some interest.

The Fitzgerald Marine Reserve is a pretty awesome and very accessible tide pool area in Moss Beach.  As a bonus you can hit up the Moss Beach Distillery afterward!

I like the standard pump models and the Katadyn has been an industry standard for many years.  Many of the parts are serviceable and replaceable and I have been using the same unit with small tweaks for >10 years.

Nice work!  You saved me from a last minute trip to West Marine I'd probably be making the day before opener.

I'll take 4 (2 for me and 2 for NolanDuke).  We are heading down to Palm Springs area next week, so I will have to arrange pickup after the 17th.  Can pay sooner.
Kind of crossing over threads now, but we chartered a boat out of Oceanside to chase some big BFTs down there too...

It's not as flashy as the other recommendations, but since I happily paddled one for several years I have to give a shout out to the Ocean Kayak Malibu Two Tandem XL Angler.  It's very easy to add additional gear tracks, although the stock features are quite a bit less than the other models you are considering.  At ~71 lbs without the seat its much easier to handle than my Hobie Outback.  It also has "useable weight capacity" of 427 lbs whatever that means.

The main downside for me was it sits a little high out of the water and can catch the wind.  The main upside was flexibility to take out the kids as a tandem or set up in the middle seat for a very stable solo ride.  I once took out another fairly large adult outside of Gerstle Cove and it was surprisingly stable with ~350lbs of dude on it.

all the recent cove action inspired me to dig out this pic

Thanks... That vid triggers my PTSD

Ha ha.  The video should have a disclaimer in the beginning "May trigger PTSD for serious kayak salmon fisherman"
He got a video of me losing a salmon in similar fashion later that day.  I told him to never upload it.  A few days later, I had to watch it...
Luckily, the videos of actually landing salmon make up for it.

Great trip! I love reading your reports.  So exciting, as you really never know just what you're going to catch at the Cove!

Looks like the "Magic of the Cove" is still in full effect.  Always enjoy the reports and trying to squeeze in a trip sometime this season.

What a great fish!  Awesome day on the water and that hog definitely made it worth it!  Just seeing that battle unfold got my heart pumping.

Nice report, action, and haul!
Really great how the water calmed down for you.
I've been fishing locally at OP lately, and feeling the call of Santa Cruz too.
