For Sale / FS: Yakima Big Catch saddles $150
« on: July 17, 2021, 02:56:40 PM »
Bought last year for my Outback and they work great. Rated for 150lbs. Selling because naked roof rack better suits my needs instead. Pick up in Fairfield

Main gate is always open. The gate before the day use parking area opens at 7. The self pay is no longer at the gate, but a machine by the boat launch. We were there today and it was slow as hell even for the boaters. We followed the fleet about 5 miles to the fishing ground, but didn’t see any of them bagging fish.

For Sale / FS: Rhino T-loader (Sold)
« on: June 19, 2021, 01:56:43 PM »
Rhino T-loader with lock and anti slip mat. Paid $299 for it. Pretty much brand new as I’ve never taken it out on a trip, only to test loading a kayak on it on my driveway. It’s great for loading a single kayak, not so much if you have to load two hence my reason for selling. Great for loading an AI, PA, or any tanks on your roof rack. Minor scuffs from being stored. $200

General Talk / Re: How often do you change you main line?
« on: June 17, 2021, 05:14:22 PM »
If I am in freshwater I'd flip it after two seasons. If I'm using it in salt (with the aforementioned contact with rox and barnacles, I'd remove the last 20 feet after each trip and retie. Braid shows the obvious damage (fraying and the like) by lightening up in color on the worn areas. Monitor the line and remove the worn area after each outing.

Two seasons tops, either flip if freshwater or discard if salt.

I’m still using the same braid on my freshwater bass tackles that I bought 10+ years ago

Another vote for Outback.  New or used doesnt matter as long as they are in good condition and 2019 or newer.

I have an older (2010) outback and love it, can't imagine needing more boat, bigger seems more of a curse than a blessing in this case.  Curious though to know why 2019 or newer, what happened in '19?

The newer hull/deck design is a such a big improvement. Except for the rudder IMO

The deck layout, with all the built on rails, is what got me - makes ot super easy to customize without a whole buncha DIY futzin and drillin. The rudder isn’t terrible, but yea.  I’m going to upgrade to a metal rudder of some sort after this season. I’ve been yearing the helloutta mine - been fishing more than ever “thanks” to covid.

Yeah, I bought mine with bass fishing in mind. I have a Revo16 dedicated for ocean fishing except crabbing. What I hate about that rudder design is how it sticks out. You need to be mindful when moving it around or when launching and landing. Other than than, I really like it.

Thanks to the famous Youtubers who blew up that spot and killed the salmon fishery there, the easy path from the parking lot to the water had been blocked by two large boulders. You won’t be able to walk your kayak over them, but you could unpack and hand carry it over the boulders or take the steep hill narrow path. It’s easier to launch from the boat launch a mile further.

Thanks for the heads up. I planned to walk it down from the little turn off right before the lot (attached). I like to get on the water early which I assume means before they open the gates (google says 7:30 am).

Will report back regardless of outcome...

You won’t make it. That’s more of a cliff than a hill. Also that’s more of just a parking lot than a day use. Not sure I’ve ever seen the gate closed there. Personally I would launch at the campground just north of there. Gates don’t close. Put your money in the iron ranger. Or if targeting bass go out of capell cove which opens at 4am or something like that.
+1. I launched out of there when it was drizzling and it was so sketchy I almost rolled down that cliff. I think it’s $15 to launch out of Putah.

People have been using extension to raise their rods to clear when pedaling a hobie. What kind of Hobie do you have? Is it a built in plastic gear trac? I would only mount fish finder on those.

General Fishing Tips / Re: keeping fishing rods ON the kayak?
« on: May 01, 2021, 10:37:01 AM »
Just remember, when you flip in the surf or rough open ocean, you only have split seconds to right your kayak and get back on it. I wouldn’t want to waste precious time scrambling where these leashes were anchored to.

General Talk / Re: Local (or NCKA member) tied shrimp flies?
« on: April 17, 2021, 06:51:01 PM »
I used to tie them and was getting creative with feathers and buck tails, but later learned RF would just hit anything that moves (even your sinker). So now if I were to use a teaser, I’d just tie leftover bass lure trailers

Dielectric grease on the connections? As for the wire splices, use shrink tubes and on top of that, coat it with liquid electrical tape.

Hey Bob
That's a great set-up!
+1. What do you do when it’s raining though?

Nice fish. I used to go there all the time back in the days

Don’t bother with the mini wheels. You’d appreciate the bigger wheels specially when on uneven terrain.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Clear Lake weekend

I was in Clear lake by the state park a few weeks ago and that creek where the crappies where usually spawning was really shallow, as in 1-2ft deep only
