General Fishing Tips / Kayak loading on tailgate spoiler
« on: February 04, 2024, 11:51:24 AM »
I want to take my Revo 16 on my Honda Odyssey, and need advice on how to load it.
I’m worried that if I lean the kayak on the plastic spoiler at the top of the tailgate, then the spoiler will break.

Another thing is that when the tailgate opens, it’ll probably hit the kayak. Not sure if there’s anything that can be done about that. Just be careful not to open it when the kayak is on.

General Talk / Peace and lead
« on: November 24, 2023, 07:55:46 PM »
I’ve enjoyed fishing ever since I got my kayak. There was never a time where I was too busy to get otw. I had quiet a good work life balance. Sometimes during the day I would go down to the garage to tweak my fishing gear, or play with my recent toy - rod, reel, lures. It’s like being a kid, except without adult supervision.

Well. It was bound to happen at work that I eventually got a manager that, let’s not say anything, but just that I was working non stop. And so from august till now I’ve been mostly MIA here. Around that time I decided to get a Lee Production pot for lead melting. I was getting low on 3oz. sinkers and decided to make my own. The melter arrived, but I was so busy that I didn’t even have time to try it. I know many of the folks here don’t think there’s anything unusual about it, but that’s exactly the point of this post. It was an anomaly. Or an omen, whatever you want to call it, that as someone who really enjoys fishing and playing with anything fishing, that lead melter was sitting at the corner of the garage for months.

Last week things at work finally calmed down. Like from 9ft swell one day to lake conditions the next. I was so relieved. And I knew right away what I’ll do on the morning of thanksgiving. I would melt lead.

And so, my wife took the kids out early, and the sun rose in all its glory, and there was a perfect breeze just enough to blow the lead smell away, and I let my mind dive into the simple existence of a man with his toys in his garage, melting lead, and doing the repetitive casting operation. I loved every single moment of it. And I felt I found myself again after so many stressful months at work.

I don’t know if there’s a point to this story. My feeling is that many of the old timers in this community have probably been in a similar situation many times before. But for someone like me, who always had time for hobbies and enjoy the little good moments in between, I found the last months very unusual.

Before I forget, let me attach some pics. And if anyone has similar stories they want to share, then I’d love to hear from you

General Talk / Halibut this weekend
« on: October 19, 2023, 12:01:08 PM »
I haven’t been out in a looooooong time!
Just super busy with work and fam.
Was bummed to see 5ft+ swell everywhere on the coast up and down from SF. Wind looks good though.

Does anyone think swell is really going to be that high? if you could go fishing for ocean Halibut this weekend, where would you go?

Am I the only one wondering what happened to Matt from Fisherman’s Life? He didn’t post in a few months. I hope he’s ok.

General Fishing Tips / Fog today
« on: July 15, 2023, 09:36:47 AM »
Stumbled upon this neat website that shows live fog coverage in the Bay Area. They also have a cool 2hr and 24hr loop, which allows you to see the movement of fog during the day. So interesting!

General Talk / Kayak cleaner
« on: June 25, 2023, 08:31:26 AM »
I have some stains on my kayak that I want to clean, and was trying acetone and paint brush thinner to remove them, but it didn’t help. Was wondering if folks have any recommendations.

The stains by the mirage drive are probably from my diving boots. I don’t think the other stains are from fish.

Thanks

General Talk / Kokatat in the wash
« on: June 13, 2023, 08:29:52 PM »
Did anyone wash their Kokatat semi drysuit in a washing machine? Is there any damage or wear as a result?

As per Kokatat :
When washing, always follow sewn-in care instructions. With dry suits and dry tops Kokatat recommends using cold water, delicate cycle, gentle liquid soap, with no bleach or harsh chemicals, and high water volume, in a front loading machine. Rinse well (which may mean running it through a second time, inside out with no soap OR use a cold shower). Line dry.

General Fishing Tips / Whales
« on: June 06, 2023, 09:11:43 AM »
The whales are here. We saw them from Mori point yesterday. At least 3. Working with the birds on anchovies probably.

I was reflecting on how, this time last year, we would be gathering at the parking lot, dreaming of landing a fat salmon  :smt010

General Talk / Plus 6
« on: May 26, 2023, 09:43:35 AM »
For my Friday coffee I drove to LM and was surprised to see the entire parking lot (not just where the surfers park) totally reconfigured, and resurfaced. All black and white and lots of space. My initial instinct was - wow, so spacious, but less parking spaces.. Then an old man who works in a nearby store told me a computer redesigned the lot and it has 6 more parking spots.

General Talk / The Dry suit vs. wet suit argument
« on: May 01, 2023, 02:04:55 PM »
In the winter, and more generally when NCKA members don’t have better things to do (such as chasing salmon) it is customary to argue about things that are a matter of personal preference, such as politics or the eternal argument of wet suits vs dry suits.

So.. I have a Kokatat dry suit (neoprene gasket at neck) and an NRS a farmer John, and I only like using the Kokatat when the risk is low. For example, crabbing in LM in December: you’re pretty close to shore, and there are many anglers around. But, since a wetsuit can tear in the middle of a trip, there are very few other occasions that I use it. And since it’s pretty cold here on the coast, I was looking for some solution to keep me warm, but with the same safety of a wetsuit.

I decided to get the Kokatat Tempest pants, and wear them over my farmer John. This way my legs would stay dry and warm. It doesn’t have a relief zipper, but I can always pull the pants down for that. The pants are $450 and can be used as waders, which is pretty cool.

General Talk / MSW killed by Surfline
« on: April 30, 2023, 01:37:59 PM »
MSW was bought by Surfline and shortly after “integrated” (disappeared). No more long range forecasts … goodbye clean ad-free non-cluttered interface.

Any suggestions for swell, period, and surf height forecasts?
