General Fishing Tips / Re: Alameda Rock Wall advice
« on: April 12, 2024, 04:13:57 PM »
Look up the tide charts for Alameda for the days that you are going. Then usually go with the tide direction - towards The bridge on outgoing or towards OAK during incoming and then back after the tide change.  But also look at Windy for wind forecast. Sometimes it really turns on in the afternoon. I would avoid over 10mph or so for now.
I had to really struggle back once in my inflatable i9 when I ignored the tide. It was brutal. But in your yak it wouldn't be as bad.

Awesome job. Bass can be a blast but there is something about the salt and catching fish that you want to eat that might be more fun.

This sounds interesting.
I hate to bring up the whole motorized vs non-motorized issue but which way is this swinging?
Non-motorized sounds more like it fits Olympic ideals, but I think the current bass competitions are mostly motorized.

General Talk / Re: Sunglasses that I highly recommend
« on: April 01, 2024, 10:10:00 AM »
Beware of cheap sunglasses. Polarization is a minimum, but according to my optometrist, quality of UV A and B blockage varies. He says you need to look up lens ratings - I'm not sure where. Cheap sunglasses can actually do more harm than not wearing any, by increasing the dilation of your eyes, letting in more UV.

I wear $50 Cocoons over my prescription glasses. They look a little "out-there" but give good side protection. They can scratch easily though.

AOTY / Re: Almost didn’t get an AOTY fish in March.

4 Species! Sweet. I need 3 of those on my AOTY.

Looking for the approval and conditions for a possible 50 fathom outing in April.

Awesome work! I emailed but don’t think I ever got a reply.

Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Hull Protection

Here’s my Pereguard job on my Lynx where I couldn’t quite get it to conform and on my OB where the little triangle cuts I made didn’t fit or stick well and are held in with….tape.
The Pereguard on the Lynx side edges has been perfect so far.

The Outback has a small replaceable looking part ahead of the rudder but it seems like they need one on the front.
I've was using Gorilla tape in 3 layers and replacing it every few months or so. I finally got some Pereguard that doesn't look great with my install job (but better than tape) but has held up well so far. It comes in white as well as black and the white looks good on the Lynx. It adds minimal weight compared to some other solutions (Car door protector bumper strips). Pereguard for the win.

Thanks Al!  I love it, especially the weight.  My hesitation is mandatorily adding up to 32oz of lead to my platform for an unverified life expectancy of said released species.   :smt006
I've descended even a 20"+ Yellow Eye on 10oz. It took a bit to get him started but once they go down about 10 feet they seem to be able to keep going. That was in only about 60' of water though, so maybe that helped. I think Coppers and maybe Quillbacks go down easier. I plan on having only 12 oz on my Shelton and if that doesn't work then I could add another 10. I cannot see 32oz ever being needed. Maybe for a huge YE in 50 fathom plus? 50 fathom plus is where the survival of barotrauma seems suspect anyway.

Fishing Tournaments and Events / Re: MBK Derby 2024

I signed up. Would it be crazy to try to set up a clean n cook area for fish? Maybe it's too much with everything else going on. Not that I don't love a good hot dog though.

Long ago my wife and I had to navigate some like that in our Neckys, but it was a good swell with a surf contest going on as well.

Congrats Mark. Once you taste them, you’ll be even a bigger fan.

AOTY / Re: Legal method of measure for AOTY?

I’m just glad it’s not on the upper part of the leg  :smt044
Or the "third leg".

AOTY / Re: Electric motors are now allowed for AOTY.
« on: March 07, 2024, 02:48:04 PM »
Motors are definitely an advantage as far as getting to and from a fishing spot. I think there should be a 100pt or 200pt seasonal handicap applied to those with motors. I also think there should be a 100 to 200 point seasonal bonus given to those who fish with the added difficulty of having dogs on the back of their kayaks. This may not be a popular opinion.
