General Fishing Tips / Re: Duck carcasses for crab pots?
« on: December 04, 2020, 10:58:03 AM »
We've used both duck carcasses and snow geese.  Something as big as a goose with wings still attached needs to be tied to the bottom of the pot.  We did have problems with wings getting jammed in the door and letting the crab leak out once they had picked the carcass clean.

Eric, nice talking with you at the cleaning table.

Check with mantanska (sp?) Rob about a dog on the kayak.  I've seen him a couple miles off of Shelter Cove with his dog riding along.

I'm not sure cooking length going to help you at all.

In Dungeness crab, domoic acid primarily accumulates in the viscera or “butter.” Cooking or freezing affected fish or shellfish tissue does not lessen the toxicity.

If Domenic doesn't reply to this post, contact him directly.  He had helped me with a question in the past, seemed to know a great deal about canning.

Nice write up Eric.

It's amazing the number of Thresher's that seem to get hooked right in that area.  Mainly by kayaker's.

Please, would you or Matt post whatever information you are told about the tag.

I seem to remember a sign hanging on the fence at the south end of the runway asking people to not fly kites because of potential interference with planes.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Scopolamine hard to get?
« on: April 30, 2015, 05:26:44 AM »
Like many of you I'm almost out of my Scopace pills.  While in Panama last year and asked a Pharmasist there, she sold me some Buscapina.  She said it was similar to scopamine.
You should be able to buy it in Mexico that's where the stuff is made.

For Sale / Hurricane Phoenix 160 for sale
« on: March 29, 2015, 06:28:38 PM »
Hurricane Phoenix 160 w/rudder.  This is a 16 foot sit-a-top kayak made of Trylon, not roto-molded polyethylene.  Comes with two flush mount rod holders, and a seat.  Color is yellow with a white bottom.  It was bought new 2008-9.  No holes have ever been drilled in this kayak, it is a clean slate.

I no longer have a shed to store it in and I don't want it outside in the weather.

PM me an offer.

It's located in Dunnigan if you would like to see it.

General Talk / Re: cat crapping in yard
« on: December 25, 2014, 06:15:54 AM »
When ever my grandfather had a cat problem, he would trap the cat in a humane trap and take back to the owner.  He would tell them next time he traps it he'll be taking it straight to the pound.

When ever I pour bacon fat on the turds in the front lawn they also seems to disappear.

Recipes / Re: Bleeding fish
« on: July 20, 2013, 12:55:07 PM »
Then I started thinking about power boats. I've never been on a power boat that soaked the fish in the water to bleed (with the notable exception being albacore in a bleed bucket).  And I don't see a lot of power boaters hanging their fish over the sides.

On my PB we've started keeping the bait well full and circulating.  Once the salmon is on board a quick bonk and then cutting the gills once its in the bait tank.  The circulating water cleans up in about 10-15 minutes then the fish is moved to ice.  Been working good so far, however some of the larger salmon 25lbs + have had a little blood left the tail region.

On my double hatch scupper pro I have a large canvas almost waterproof bag inside the front hatch.  Once I have the fish secured with a lip gripper I open the front hatch and while holding the fish over my bag I cut gills on both sides.  I have a cheap serrated knife on a string that hangs near the bag and is easy to find.  All the blood and fish stay inside my bag, I don't even get any blood on my hands.  I usually have about 1/2 bag of ice inside to help keep things cool.
This works great with rockfish, or most any fish up to 24".  Anything bigger and the bag isn't strong enough to hold it all.  It's far from perfect, but my fish stay cool, get bleed, and all the blood is contained inside my yak.

Look into Three Lakes, they are near Bucks Lake.  You can drive up to first lake, but to get to the other two you have to kayak and portage.  We always camped and fished on the second lake.  Mainly caught rainbows, but the first lake does have some Browns.
